Surly - Xtra Citra Pale Ale

I was at Casanova's yesterday and they had a few cans sitting in their "employee" cooler so you can expect to see it really soon.

 

My Artisan rep told me he can sell it to me this coming week as that will be when they are getting it. Look for it in stores the following week.

 

It's quite good. It's definitely focused on hop aromatics and flavor. Bitterness is medium. The little malt character that it does exhibit makes it much more interesting than other American session IPAs. Going off of my memory, which is kinda shit, I'd say the malt profile is similar to Bitter Brewer before it got changed in 2015.

 

I had this at Red's alehouse about two weeks ago. Great nose, but it didn't follow through on the promise. It is light and drinkable, but lacked character on the palate IMO. I might take some out on the sailboat this summer if it's priced right, but for sitting and just savoring it's lacking. It's like the background music of beer...not entertaining on it's own, but it can fill a void while you're busy swinging a golf club or wave hopping on a beam reach.

Interestingly one review says reminiscent of abrasive and the other is meh. Hoping it is the former for me!!!

 

That would be nice, but I have a hard time believing a 4.5% pale will compare in taste to the perfection that is Abrasive. Must've just met the initial smell I am guessing...

Dare I say, it will... PALE... in comparison. I'm here all week, folks. (The snow storm is already getting to me)

 

I had it on tap. Nowhere near the same flavor as Abrasive. Not. Even. Close.

I hear that a few cases of the first batch of cans made it out into the neighborhood. That's where I had one.
