Was just thinking about this and couldn't come up with many good local black IPAs. Especially hard to think of any that are bottled/canned. There's Storm King which is great, but labeled as an imperial stout. Conshohocken Brewing's A Day Without a Dawn, which is OK. Tired Hands made a few good ones over the years but never bottled any. I really like the style when done well and would love to have a few, but I just can't think of any others.

I searched through my database and you're right. There's really nothing that gained any traction & nothing besides the ones that you mentioned that were bottled/canned. Interesting observation and really no explanation that I could come up with.

Zombie, their black IPA was one of the best beers I've ever had.

TH has put on a couple black IPAs (or some other wacky name for it) in the last couple months, but nothing canned.

Conshohocken also had one called Doll's Eye that was pretty tasty.

    Didn't Victory have one?

Yeah Yakima glory. They have brought it back a few times but they don't brew it regularly anymore.

This was on draft but Avoiding Purgatory #2 from Tired Hands was outstanding.

If you want to consider Delaware as Philly area, Mispillion River cans just showed up in PA, including a Black IPA called Black Tie. I haven't had it though to comment on taste (but I picked up a 4 pack of their Holy Crap and was a fan)

I've had the Black Tie quite a few times. I like it, I wouldn't say it's the best Black IPA I've had, but it's a tad above replacement level for me.

Their Holy Crap is another orgasmic thing entirely.

I remember it well. Good beer but I could never understand why it was considered a black IPA. It wasn't black; more reddish amber with no roast to it at all. I'm actually surprised they haven't brought this back full time since they opened the new facility. My guess is that it will get a four pack revival; most likely as a seasonal, which I think it was before.

Yeah, my review from 2011 noted the color as "garnet", and that the malt flavors were "toasted malt". I'd say it was closer in characteristics to big hoppy amber/red beers like Oscar Blues G'Knight that started off being labeled "Imperial Red" to now being labeled "Imperial Red IPA" in the industry movement to call every damn hoppy beer some form of an IPA.
