Nice review! Love the collage too... what app do you use to put those together? I'd like to try it some time. Cheers!

For my first entry into today's NBS thread, I chose a brewery who is new to my area. We seem to be getting a lot of these lately here in MA (Crooked Stave, Modern Times, Almanac), and that excites me quite a bit... this one is especially exciting because their beers are mostly metal themed, and, if you've seen my posts on these threads, you'll notice I usually review a beer and then recommend some music I'm listening to while I sip. Most of the time, that music just so happens to be some form of metal!

Enter TRVE Brewing from Colorado's Cursed (mixed fermentation sour pale ale)!

What an awesome label! Great reference to the classic BOSS HM-2 distortion pedal, which was notoriously responsible for helping many 90s death metal bands, particularly those from Sweden who recorded at Sunlight Studios, achieve their gut-wrenching guitar tones!

This pours an opaque goldenrod-yellow color with a thin, wispy head of white foam that fades to nearly nothing on top of the solid, sturdy looking pale body. Kind of a boring looking, uneventful pour here, to be honest, but I didn't really expect much either. "Mixed fermentation" beers involved lactic acid bacteria, and I usually expect little to no head formation when such bugs are present.

Nose is, luckily, a vast improvement. A huge hit of bright citrusy funk, including notes of tangy Valencia orange peel, pomelo and yuzu hit my olfactory senses like a proverbial truck. Damn, this smells pretty great! Slight lactic lemony twang and kind of dank aromatics that could definitely be the result of dry-hopping. There's a dry and rustic Brett-like yeast tone with some dusty notes amid the fruity and hoppy elements.

Flavor is beautifully thirst-quenching and very tasty with a lot of the punchy citrus from the nose mingling with some suggestions of tropical fruit (passionfruit and guava) and kiwi. Somewhat bitter and rindlike with some aspirin-like chalky qualities as well, likely in no small part due to the Brett's interaction with the hops. I'm getting a light pilsner-like malt backbone that nevertheless comes across as pretty fragile considering it's definitely not the focus here.

Feel is light-bodied and playful, with spritzy carbonation and a palate-coating bitter/funk note. This is probably about a 4/10 on the sour scale, for those wondering. It's more like medium-tart than straight-up sour, and I appreciate the slightly-restrained acid profile. Sometimes these new mixed culture sours can get to be a bit too much, and this seems to especially be the case with smaller beers (this is only 4.4%), so I'm glad they went this route and kept it mostly "funky" and not "tongue-peeling." Pretty great stuff here. Wish it were less-expensive and available in a more pleasing format (this was about $4.50 for a single heavy 12 oz bottle), but it's definitely a solid and enjoyable first experience from a brewery I've long been intrigued by. Gonna have to pick up more of their stuff soon.

Just finishing up listening to a very solid piece of new black metal by the band Urfaust. Featuring some well-delivered clean vocals and a simultaneously aggressive-yet-expansive atmosphere, this album is definitely growing on me as of late.

Thanks for a great first review of the day, Maria! I'm generally not a fan of sours but based upon your review I think I'd like to try Wittekirk Wild. I guess that's why we all enjoy NBS so much!

Poured from the can into a tulip glass.

A Belgian hopped up wit hybrid. Looking in the glass quite amber colored for the body, sort of a copper orange, and mostly clear with a few odd streams of carbonation. Head is light creamed top white, with a bit of yellow, and settles to a simple half finger. Not sure what to make of this, but it otherwise looks fine but obviously not to style, with a real nice orange orb glow.

Very closed nose. Hints of biscuit and graham cracker like malt character and very faint florals. Just barely hints at some Belgian character, but hardly anything hop forward either. So far it's coming off like a Belgian Ambre than anything and a very closed one at that.

Palate makes some interesting turns. Chewy malt body and a sense of nice sugars which makes and almost soft toffee flavor in the mid palate. Hits more towards a bit of pine bitterness as well and a little bit of estery quality that gets almost into banana territory. Creamy aftertaste and mouthfeel as well.

Doesn't quite come off like a wit, nor an IPA exactly either, more like an interesting Belgian ambre than anything.

    look: 3.5 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75 | BA Generated Score: 3.64

    -------------------

I have some plans tonight... if I am up for it I may join you all in new beers later...

    Cheers!

Great review! There are now so many "Dubviants" based upon different hop profiles that the base O'Dub sort of gets lost in the mix. We all have our favorite (mine is the Mosaic). Thank you for reminding us how good the base DIPA is.

A quick and lazy post sharing a local release at my brothers. A bomber of barrel aged Fallen Swine smoke porter with smoked pork chops, maple syrup and aged in Journeyman bourbon barrels.

In short it's rather flat in feel, bourbon forward in smell and taste with not much else going on given the ingredients. If you're a bourbon fan this is you're beer, I was hoping for more. My score is 3.78.

    Cheers gang, here's the scorecard......

Great review! Thank you. While I've enjoyed Born Yesterday, to me it's not as off the charts as indicated by other reviews. I'm not talking it down but I'm glad to see some perspective here.

I do it on my iPhone using Pic Stitch, which I downloaded quite a while ago. It's got a decent amount of photo editing options to get the photos looking a little better (that I never use, of course ). I forget if it was a purchased app or free (though it does have in-app purchases).

I loved last year's Born Yesterday, and enjoyed my first couple of this year's, though not as much as I recalled. Of course, we know there are many reasons for this, one of them being they are different beers (right?). I did start getting what @TongoRad mentions with more bitterness and less "juiciness"in the last couple, though it didn't rub me as wrong as it did him, apparently . So I think I am more in line with @MacMalt.

I reached back into @SammyJaxxxx 's box of goodness, and purposely chose the beer I thought I was most likely to dislike. I don't like pumpkin, I don't like pumpkin pie spices, I'm happy to report that this will be the only pumpkin beer I will have had this year. I just plain stay away from them. All that said, this beer was probably very good, for what it is. The fact that the base beer was a Cream Ale (and, a big one at that) was an interesting approach, I thought, so I went at this with as open a mind as I could.

I didn't like it. But, it was an interesting beer for sure, so I'm glad I got the chance to try it. I shared some with a coworker, and he said that it was the best pumpkin beer he's ever had. I really want to try the base beer, so Sammy, if that big Cream Ale is available as a stand alone, I am serious ISO. I think a lot of my friends would groove on it too.

Got to try my first RAR beer today thanks to a little line trade action. I like the pulp alot , tasted like I was eating a real life orange, not like juice but like the actual fruit. Gotta get my ass out there for some more soon.

Good evening New BSers! I just got back (about 30 minutes ago) from the Chicago 'burbs and can now enter today's festivities! Maria, thanks for starting off today's thread: I haven't had time to read the thread yet but I couldn't wait to crack this beer. @Josholson666 is a fantabulously generous BA and I've been thinking about this beer and drooling

Received from @Josholson666 for NBS BIF #4.
Undated bottle, other than “2015” at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter
    Aroma – malt and figs
Head small (Maximum 1.3 cm, aggressive pour), tan, creamy, diminishing to a three mm ring and a rocky partial layer
    Lacing - none
    Body – copper, hazy, effervescent
Flavor – as in the nose, malt and fig, moderately sweet, a little caramel; no hops, no diacetyl. Alcohol is noted in the mild stomach burn but in neither the nose nor flavor.
Palate – medium to full, creamy, soft carbonation

A very pleasant brew. I’m not picking up the English hops, but otherwise this is a pretty good example of the style.

    Appearance 4, Aroma 4.25, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4.25, Overall 4.5.

@cavedave, I consider "drinkability" to be a part of "Overall" as well as "Flavor" - if it tastes like perfume it's going to get low(er) ratings in both catagories.

Prosit dudes and dudettes! I may be back later after Mrs. Lizard gets back, if she'll let me after I hit her with the changes to our lifestyle that I intend to initiate following the last three days updates.

It was billed as a pumpkin beer by and for people that don't like pumpkin beers.
They did something earlier in the year with a cream ale. I hope they do more with that base.

Beer number 2, Weyerbacher Sunday Molé Stout! Sometimes I forget how good Weyerbacher is, definitely given the price. Though it isn't as good as say Bomb!, it is still very well brewed and a great deal at $16 a 4-pack.

    4.43/5 rDev +8%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

12 oz bottle, dated 9/12/16, poured into a tulip

A- Black with a quickly faded dark brown head.

S- Roasted coffee, hints of chocolate, some heat from peppers, touch of cinnamon, slightly smoky and nice sweetness.

T- Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, some vanilla, caramel malts, some cinnamon, nice kick from the peppers without being overwhelming.

    M- Smooth, full body.

O- Great twist on SMS, cinnamon might be on the mild side but gives this great balance, peppers work well with this beer. Worth stocking up on!
