I Think this beer might be past its prime Phil. Partially my fault for letting this sit a little too long. Not sure when I purchased it so my opinion may influenced by the age.

Yeah maybe, but I still stand by my Almanac hit or miss statement. Some of their stuff is upper echelon, then others are a WTF mess! I have not had this beer you've reviewed, but would not be surprised if it fit the latter. Again, just one man's opinion. Cheers Larry

Once upon a time I made a similar type of beer , a doppelbock malt bill fermented with hefeweizen yeast . I tended to think of it as a Biere de Garde kind of thing , but nobody else agreed with me . It was very tasty , though , hefty with some esters and spice . I'm sure that collaboration will push similar buttons for me .

    Elysian Spce Dust IPA

Elysian is fairly new to MI, and I am always excited to try something new. I always thought 8.2% was rather high for an IPA, and going into this I was expecting something along the imperial lines. However, this drinks lighter than the alcohol would suggest. Good balance, sweetness is complimentary to the bitterness that is quite present, but doesn't ever linger too long. Well done beer.

One to number two from Elysian. These are the only beers I have seen from them, and not surprisingly they are the top two most ticked beers of theirs on BA. This is a good pumpkin ale. The smell has a sweet potato casserole vibe to it, which I like. The flavor is not as rich as the aroma, but it is well balanced and definitely has a solid pumpkin meat presence to accompany the spices, which can't be said about most pumpkin ales. The spices do help dry the finish, though. This is a notch below DFH Punkin, which is not a knock in my book since that is my new benchmark in the style.

    Cheers, NBS!

Thanks. I do like sours but that was my first sour stout. I'll have to give that Bruery beer a try. I've enjoyed a few of their beers but was aways hesitant on that one.

You better buy that damn beer.

How great would it have been if 2 beers in the 4 pack were the Ommegang recipe and 2 beers were the Urban Chestnut recipe? That would have been a great 4 pack. Maybe when beer geeks rule the world. (scary thought)

Good evening, all, and Happy New DIPA Sunday! Thanks to @utopiajane for "setting the table" for us with that brilliant opening review. I'll be working on Thanksgiving Day, so nothing hoppy for me until I get home. Meanwhile, though, I'll be preparing a big traditional Thanksgiving meal for our group home residents. Butternut squash soup with fried sage leaves, sausage and cranberry stuffing, wild rice with roasted root vegetables, bacon-wrapped turkey, cranberry sauce (NOT from a can!), mashed potatoes with giblet gravy, pumpkin trifle, and mulled cranberry punch. Thanksgiving Day is my absolute favorite day of the year to work because I don't have to do much of anything except cook. Now on to the beer. From the Toppling Goliath web site (tgbrews.com):
Sosus. Beautiful pour, and an aroma to die for. Grapefruit, pine, and citrus rind, with some light floral notes.

I found this much more intense on the nose than on the palate. It is not the hop bomb I was expecting, and it is pleasantly drinkable despite the high IBU rating. Well balanced, with a crisp finish and no lingering bitterness. Great complement to spicy food. An outstanding beer, and worthy of this fifty-cent wine glass. The glass was languishing on the thrift-store shelf with jelly jars, tumblers, coffee cups, and a bunch of other nondescript junk. The sleek lines caught my eye. As I was giving it a closer look, I discovered this:

I also picked up a large lead crystal goblet, for which I had to climb over a bumper pool table. Yes, I'm insane.

I bought this 4-pack a couple of months ago and have had a couple, so technically it's not a New New beer ... but the review is new ... does that count?

It's tasty and has a dusty aroma note that's intriguing. It's Belgian-like but not funky or wild-aleesque, more like an abbey ale yeasty dusty aroma. It's very sweet, too, more so in the aroma than the flavor. In fact, the flavor seems relatively tame all around with a lot of strawberry/raspberry flavor but not too much sugar sweetness and almost nothing else, no hops, no earthiness, no tartness. I have one bottle left and want to drink it while eating a spicy/salty/meaty meal -- something makes me think it would fit perfectly.

    Cheers!
