Figured we should get a thread going instead of clogging up the on tap thread. Lots of talk about some current attempts at NE IPA's here in Minneapolis. Use this thread to post opinions, who's got some on tap, etc.

Really excited to pick up the Sisyphus "The First Beer We Distributed," went out to select liquor stores today.

Fulton's Grog is also quite good. The flavor is all there, but I think the turbidity wasn't quite there, though I care less about the cloudy piss aspect and more about the flavors, personally.

    Thanks for creating this.

Does anyone know if Sisyphus First Beer We Distributed is a new beer or the Citra/equinox IPA they had on tap awhile back and billed as NE Style?

Bent Paddle has a new IPA coming out soon whose description reads like a NE Style IPA. "A smooth to drink, fun to smell, new school IPA. Huge hop aromatics, nice bitterness, combined with a silky smooth mouth feel make this hop bomb approachable yet intriguing to the hoppiest of hopheads out there."

I'm also looking forward to picking up a bottle of that Sisyphus beer. I generally like the hop-forward beers they make (Cloudy with a Chance of Yeast Balls, Juice is Loose, Piney but Younger, Isaac the Faxman, etc). I hope that bottles continues their streak with another solid IPA. The new IPA from Bent Paddle sounds good too. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Overall, my favorite MN-brewed, NE-style IPAs have been brewed by Forager (such as, Moon Hops, Hip Hops, Cloudy Daze) and Disgruntled (Stupid Good, Reaper). Some of the hoppy offerings from Junkyard could probably fall into this category too. I like those the best, but getting growlers or crowlers from the brewery is a hassle since they aren't in the metro. If one of those places could put 4 or 6 packs of their beer onto store shelves near me, I don't know if I would buy much of anything else.

It's definitely promising to see so many young breweries putting out such great IPAs.

It's the same recipe, in bottle form and available at select retailers. We originally had planned to release that batch of it like we did with this batch, but the taproom was low on beer and we needed it for in-house.

Will be buying some (sisyphus) tomorrow, also looking forward to the Bent Paddle Oatmeal IPA.

Looking forward to any NE style hoppy ale from Bent Paddle. Until Disgruntled came along, the closest thing I had to the style from a MN brewery was Hop Forest. I sent some to a friend in New Hampshire and he agreed and favorably compared it to Foundation's DIPA.

I thoroughly enjoyed Fulton's Grog -- their NE style IPA.

"A New England (or Northeast, or East Coast) IPA has a number of very distinct traits that separate it from a typical IPA. The most obvious defining characteristic is the hazy appearance. The haze is a direct byproduct of the ingredients and process. The addition of 20% Oats in the mash, a chloride heavy water chemistry, a low flocculating yeast, and not filtering this beer are all responsible for the haze and smooth, creamy mouthfeel. This beer is aggressively hopped with late boil and whirlpool additions that leave the beer with very little perceived lingering bitterness, but rather a tropical and juicy finish. If that wasn't enough, we dry hopped this beer twice with Citra, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops to add aromas of citrus and stone fruits."

Agreed, it was a great beer, would love to see that one come out in cans.

For me if it doesn't look like a glass of grapefruit juice with chunks floating around, down the drain it goes! (Just kidding, I actually do love the NE style though)

That is super cool, but why on earth with that really nice canning line did they use a bomber?

    Because its Raar bro!
Seriously, good point. A 4pk or 6pk format with heavy distribution would have been great. Also curious on the price point considering it's going in bombers.

Zipps just tweeted it, I imagine Elevated either already has it or is getting it soon.

Deviation 002 from Modist is a 'NE style beer' . i think this is solid but would like a little 'juice' in the flavor of any NE style beer i choose. Moon Hops from Forager was pretty close but tasted a little more ipa ish than juicy. Is NE style beers main characteristic the juice factor in taste?

I think it's a bit hard to fully define since it's not an official style yet (the juicy quality is definitely a key characteristic), but I'd say these are the most "identifiable" characteristics:
    • "juicy" quality
    • Soft, "pillow-y" mouthfeel
    • Turbid, murky, hazy
    • Minimal bitterness
I know these typically come from having a protein heavy wort, a shit-ton of late-hopping to achieve the fruit-like qualities of the common hops for these styles (galaxy, citra, mosiac), and probably some type of specific yeast.

Both elevated stores have it. The Minneapolis store should have for sale earlier but call to check!

I agree - It would be amazing for the Twin Cities market to have regular shelf access to Forager, Disgruntled and Junkyard IPAs. Hopefully that happens soon. I'm not sure why Fulton/Indeed/Steel Toe/etc. aren't more aggressively trying to produce this style IPA. It hasn't taken Forager/Disgruntled/Junkyard long to produce multiple excellent NE-style IPAs.

Also looking forward to TG finishing their new brewery and hopefully getting bomber quality PsuedoSue in cans, and hopefully doing regular DDH releases of Sue/Pompeii/Sosus, similar to the Trillium model. Maybe even regular production of King Sue in can format?!?!?

A lot of these characteristics also come from use of oats and/or wheat in the grist.
