Although the nation’s capital was slow to embrace locally brewed beer when the first wave of microbreweries swept over other parts of the country in the 1980s and ’90s, a recent shift has created a flourishing beer culture.

Good selection, guys - you hit all the essentials in the District! The Greater DC Metro Area beer scene has been blowing up fast and hard in the last few years, and drinkers around here are quickly finding it easier and easier to drink local when they can't score the best whales or hottest brews from across the country.

Pretty well done, agree that this hit the spots I would expect plus a couple I still need to check out. Definitely enjoyed the tidbits of connections of the new places back to the Brickskeller (only one of which I was aware of).

I don't disagree with the names and places listed, because I assume the article was directed more to trendy spots with on-site brewing or awe-inspiring selection. However, spots like the Dubliner that provide atmosphere in spades would have been a nice addition to the list as well.

Good article but I was hoping to hear about Bardo's . Was a big brew pub in the 90's . I believe it was in Arlington though , not quite in DC . It was in a former Oldsmobile dealership .

Yep, it was on the other side of the Potomac. He's a lengthy blog post that covers the history of Bardo's and its legacy today: http://www.beerstrengthmatters.com/?p=310

most of Grimm is brewed in DC and you can get it on tap before it gets canned/bottled to head up to NY

also if you want to drive a little both Aslin and RAR are within striking distance

Decent article about the history, though it meanders a bit. I recall going to Bardo's but well before I understood good beer (not sure I even realized the opportunities I had before me). The end of the article, which I FFW'd through did highlight a bunch of decent spots on the immediate western suburbs of the city.
