Paradox #41 Bood Rooted. A Wild Sour Golden Ale aged in Oak Barrels with Ginger & Blood Orange. Really tasty, would get that one again. Review below: 3.94 overall

Pours an effervescent gold with 3 fingersof pearl colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Bready with floral notes, some citrus

T: Grassy, lemony, a little lime & crackery dryness up front. A touch of soapyness and breadyness as this warms, more lime as well. Finishes grassy, crisp & with a little citrus

MF: Light/medium body, pretty firm carbonation , good balance

Easy drinker with enough flavor to hold your attention for a while

Was in the area last summer, but took a different fork in the road. I will visit the next time near Divide!

Moderate pour yields a nice, white, one inch head over a golden yellow body with nice lacing. Nose of tropical fruit for days! Taste follows, but bitterness comes through and fights the fruit for your palate's attention Bitterness wins! A nice feel and overall a fine brew! Thanks to Michael for the hook up!

#2, this is a really cool spin on an RIS .....

I love anniversary beers, especially when the brewery is willing to step outside the box, and Alaskan did that in spades with this beer. The base beer has the critical mass required by an RIS, but the birch syrup and wildflower honey take this in a direction I don't associate with an RIS - there's a lot of sweetness, but it's not cloying as sweetness additions can be in big stouts. I don't know if the birch syrup or the wildflower honey has a spicy component, but the spice is welcome.

There's also a smokiness from Alaskan's signature alder-smoked malt, which fits well with this beer. It would've been easy for Alaskan to BA this beer, but they went a different direction, with the addition of local ingredients, and produced a beer that is both unique and delicious.

    Rated 4.27.

Absolutely delicious beer, dark rich sweet malts. A great base milk stout with tons of cinnamon some pepper spice and a good amount of coffee. I love this and wish I bought more than a single.

Sharing this with my mom. She likes Mole desserts, and had interest when I told her they make beers with those flavors.

    The Bruery's Share This: Mole.

Pours black with two fingers of caramel head. Head foams up nicely, with a tightly woven head. Retention is good, with solid lacing. Aroma teems with little chili peppers, vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, and roasted malts. Great complexity, and yet enticingly attractive. Chili peppers peak out first in the flavor profile. Vanilla, cinnamon, lactose, and roasted and toasted malts round out a complex, yet balanced flavor profile. Mouth feel is thick and filling, with a bit of graininess. Overall, a sublime Mole-type stout. It has plenty going on, and yet retains balance and form. It's tasty and approachable. Woah.

    Personal reflection:
Abraxas from Perennial is in this style. I absolutely loved it. This beer is comparable, but not quite as substantial.

Edit: I do my swim work out in about 10 hours. I'm staying up special for the game, but man, this is atrocious.

G' evening NBS-ers and thanks to @cavedave for getting it started today!

Been a while since I posted, I've just been so busy with the fam, that I just don't have the time to sit down with the laptop like I used to.

Tonight's entry is a tasty lil gem from Funky Buddha
    [IMG]
    Bottled on 11/15/16
There's a ton of floaties in this one!
Plenty of vanilla and little strawberry sweetness on the nose.
Taste has plenty of vanilla and just a little strawberry in the background.
A nice light bodied beer with not a hint of 9% abv.
Overall, a little too sweet, but it's still a typical dessert style beer from FB, which seems to be their strong suit.

    Cheers!

Half time, Atlanta kicking ass, having a beer! Life is good
    Shorts Good Humans
Dry Hopped Double Brown Ale, 9.1 ABV
Aroma is very herbal, earthy, the dry hops take center stage and the initial taste is hoppy for a brown ale. The malty nut, toffee follow but the hop and alcohol presence fights for center stage. Tasty and warming. Time for lady gaga! Cheers BAs

In the recent post about German vs Czech pilsners I mentioned this one as being one of my favorite US made pilsners. For me some get to far into bread and grass, like a grass sandwich, while Von Trapps rendition pulls together a ton of flavor while staying light and easy drinking.

16 oz can, dated 1/5/17, poured into teku

A- A hazy golden straw color with a two finger white head

S- Guava, melons, tropical fruits, citrus, peaches. Nose reminds me a lot of Guava Milkshake.

T- Citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruits, guava, melons, mild malt backbone, slightly dank finish.

M- Smooth, a little creamy, medium body.

O- A great IPA, very fruity. This beer reminds me a lot of Guava Milkshake even though it has no fruit added. Definitely will have to pick this up next time they can it.

    Continuing on the day:

I actually had to add this one to BA(odd for an import). Gose North by To Øl. Sea buckthorn and Quince fruited Gose. This was awesome! Aromas and flavors of big tart lemon, lime, orange, mango, berries, peach, pineapple, melon, pear, sea salt and light pepper; with moderate wheat/cracker malt; and light lacto funk and hay/grassy notes. Moderate fruity/lactic tartness and light-moderate peppery yeast spice on the finish. Light-medium bodied; balanced acidity and salinity in the mouthfeel; with some creamy/grainy wheat notes. Moderately crisp/dry finish from acidity and medium-high carbonation. Never puckering, and quite refreshing. Really spot on gose. The lacto and fruit flavors are really well balanced; with a nice malt backing. This brewery has never been disappointing. 4.1
    [IMG]

Really good fruit IPA. Fantastic head retention and dense lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big juicy mango, pineapple, peach, apricot, melon, passion fruit, coconut, papaya, tangerine, orange peel, and light pepper/pine; with some bread/light honey malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine/herbal/citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced hop stickiness and grainy/bready malts in the mouthfeel; touch of resins and lightly increasing dryness. Very slight fruit acidity. No bitter hop or fruit astringency. Started off really positive, but my opinion dropped a bit as I finished the glass. Aromas are really juicy and vibrant, but the taste gets pretty odd and artificial feeling; but this has really nice hop complexity and fruit balance overall. Pretty refreshing. I will likely try out the new Rebel IPA soon as well. All of the rebels except for the original regular are just pale malt and hops for the most part. The original had a lot of crystal malt sweetness, so hopefully that goes away. Really enjoyed this one. 3.83
    [IMG]

I believe this is the base beer for all of their fruited Berliner weiss? (Frucht). Might be the Hottenroth replacement too. Anyways, this was excellent! Aromas and flavors of big tart/sour lemon, lime, peach, apricot, green apple, pear, white grape, hay, straw, oak, and moderate wheat/crackery malts; with lighter notes of leathery/musty funk and white wine vinegar. Moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness on the finish. Light-medium bodied; nicely lactic/acidic in the mouthfeel with a fair amount of grainy wheat malts. Lightly puckering, but not astringent or overwhelming. Very drinkable. Looking at my Hottenroth notes from 2013, this appears to be quite similar; but perhaps more funky on Brett presence? I will have to grab another bottle of Hottenroth from last year to check out again. 4.1

After a Hiatus this afternoon I'm back with new brew number two. It's a beer I've been meaning to hunt down and hadn't done that yet. But @dee4maine was kind enough to dig one up for me. Allagash Coolship cerise.

Pours a slightly hazy red orange, almost salmon color, with a quickly dissipating white head. Constant stream of bubbles that keeps a nice halo around the glass.

The aroma is mostly tart cherry but there are some notes of oak and almond and hayfield. Nose is a definite indicator of the tart taste to come.

The taste is very tart, but once the mouth adjusts to the tartness the flavors really start to come alive. The wild things lend a nice hayfield funk, like a very light Brett character. Theres oak, almond, lemon, and some herbal quality (thyme perhaps). Tannins are prominent and finish the beer dry.

The mouthfeel is thin and crisp and refreshing with low carbonation.

Another excellent sour from Allagash. The Coolship cruise is like a less funky more tart version of Nancy. I like a little Brett character (or funk from any wild stuff) but I don't like it overwhelm everything else, and I like sour but I don't want to drink straight vinegar. This has the balance nailed down, little funky, nice and tart, but you can still taste everything else that was done to this beer to put it in your glass.

    Cheers!

Well I'd like to pipe in with the same.
Mine was almost clear. A tinge of haze.Golden amber in hue. Massive soapy head like you mentioned. Sticky, sticky, sticky lacing.
Nose is dank. Pear to over ripe peach with maybe a subtle allusion to onion.
A nice balance between sweet, dank, dry mango, and maybe a hint of banana. (But, I must admit, I was searching for the name of what I was tasting until I read that you wrote "banana," and then I said, "AHA!" You nailed it. It's like over ripe banana that one uses to make banana bread. But, oh so subtle. Sometimes the sense of taste works the way. So far removed from the vocabulary compartment of the brain. You find yourself saying things like, "Shit, I know this flavor!!! What the hell is the name?" But, banana it was.
Mouthfeel goes in the direction of a cream ale. Not a full sprint in that direction, but a wheaty, almost cream ale feel.
    Quite good overall.

Got five new beers in on this Super Bowl Sunday. Didn't want the Patriots to win, but have to give them props on that overtime drive. Final new beer is Mikkeller Spontandryhop Citra, a dry hopped sour. I always get happy when I see dry hopped sours and this is one worth picking if you like them.

In all fairness Jack, this is what I said:

"Still a good beer, don't get me wrong, but in the past HS has been far better than just another "good beer" (at least to my palate)."

That being said, for whatever reason, I have not been as impressed with the 2017 hopslam, as I have been with previous vintages. In fact, I just cracked open my last can, and it just confirmed my previous impression. I get some honey on the nose, as well as a light skunky aroma from the hops, but the beer otherwise smells surprisingly sweet and malty to me. If anything, the flavor profile is even more disappointing. The beer is quite sweet and malty, and I'm not picking up any honey flavor. There's decent bitterness on the finish, but I'm also picking up some heat from the alcohol, something I cannot recall encountering in the past. I often find that to be the case in DIPA's where the sweet malt flavor tends to dominate the flavor profile. Again, this is not something I can recall experiencing with past vintages of HS.

That being said, it's just my opinion Jack, and I only posted what I posted out of curiosity. I was wondering if anyone else had had a similar experience with the 2017, especially those of us living out in the NW who have not been able to obtain HS (except by trade) for some time. Even then, I would just have assumed that my palate has become ruined/jaded from all the hop bombs I've consumed out here in the NW, were it not for the fact that some of the friends I've spoken to out here have expressed similar impressions. As I indicated, that in turn made me curious, and it made me wonder if Bells is doing something different with their recipe, especially if (as I suspect) they've dramatically increased the amount of HS they're making these days.
