My understanding of the way a tie would be broken is that the 5.3% voters would get exactly what they want.

Yowza! That's exactly how it looks right now! Those early exit polls can sure be misleading.

I am really happy about an ESB put in this process.
    Thanks @VikeMan for the effort.
    Cheers

I like it . . . a mode-driven ABV. Typically the mean gets all the glory while the median is largely pushed around by circumstances. But a mode-driven result gives it a distinct British character. For the 5.2/5.3 per-cent'ers . . . try viewing your hydrometer from a lower angle for your FG and you'll likely shake off that extra alcohol.

I wanted something sub 4.5 but the drunks voting wouldn't have it.

I am ignorant of the style, I assumed it was supposed to be a little high moderate on the ABV (say ~6%). Just an presumption from the name: English Strong Bitter. So, is it supposed to be strongly bitter, not necessarily strong in booze?

Not really bitter- bitter is as opposed to the english mild of the time. This shouldn't be an ipa. The key is balance of hop/malt.

The name is because it is stronger than an ordinary or a best bitter.

OG should be 1.046 - 1.060. It's not a strong or boozy beer.

I think it stands for "Extra Special Bitter."

Indeed, but in the BJCP guidelines they decided to call it a "strong bitter"

ETA possibly because Fullers owns the term ESB.

I believe the word Strong is a relative term that distinguishes the style from the other two bitter categories -- Ordinary Bitter and Best Bitter. It has always been my understanding ESB stands for Extra Special Bitter. Cheers!

And monks own the rights to "Trappist" but that didn't stop the BJCP from having a "Trappist" category either. Toss a coin I guess.

Could be . . . or the BA approach could make it "Empirical Statistical Beer". Don't laugh, if enough people want it Vikeman will set up a poll. Even if it's something really stupid he has recused himself and won't interfere. As long as you don't bitch openly about his process he's cool with letting the crowd drive the results.

Let's see: Strong Bitter (2015 guidelines) could be modified to "Statisically Brewed" . . . someone more clever than me could probably do better.
