I pretty much drink nothing but dark matter barrel aged coffee. It is just amazing. The barrel process also seems to stabilize some of the more volatile compounds in the beans, my guess is by competitive oxidation. Basically, the beans stay good a lot longer. If you haven't tried ba beans and like coffee, i highly recommend getting a bag and using french press.

Well, you may need to try some more? I assure you there is still some serious barrel flavor. What brew method did you use? French press is best, but i could still get plenty of barrel flavor from pour overs.

Yeah, I subscribe to Modern Times's coffee program and their BA beans are delicious, except I'm a pour-over man, myself. I prefer Modern Times to Dark Matter (who I think is probably not even a top-three roaster in Chicago, but in their defense they're still quite good and Chicago just has a really good coffee scene).

We are discussing products made with Dark Lord, not Dark Lord itself.... so I appreciate you agreeing and disagreeing with me, but I'd appreciate even more if you reference what we were actually talking about when copying my post...

Gaslight is easily number one, and it's not even close for me.

Number two I'd give to Ipsento, also by a decent margin.

Third is arguable with Halfwit (my choice), Metric, Metropolis, Dark Matter, and yes, even Intelligentsia vying pretty hard for the spot.

Which ones have you tried? I've done pour overs and Dark Matter tap for iced.

    No problem!

Two caveats, though: Halfwit's "home bar" is the Wormhole (they don't have their own coffee shop), and Metropolis, while they have great beans, they don't seem to be served in places that are good at preparing the beans, even counting their own shop up in Edgewater; you'd be better off purchasing a bag of Metropolis and brewing it yourself.

Interesting. I brought back a few bags of ba beans from modern times when i was in san diego in January, and i found their BA beans fairly inferior to dark matter. They didn't even do french press at the tasting room, which i found a little unusual because the best flavor for ba beans is definitely french press.

I only recently had an iced ba version on tap and i was pretty happy with it. Right now I have a jones dog barrel that is pretty solid and just finished of a pipeworks rittenhouse rye (brown and stirred), but that is all for beer barrel aged recently. Both weren't quite as good as the Copper and Kings guatemala peaberry, that bag blew me away. Some recent batches i've finished:

I think this is a case of palates, because I certainly don't prefer French Press in any beans, let alone BA. I've found all the Dark Matter BA beans that I've had to be fairly one-note and too barrel-heavy.

Yeah that I can definitely understand. Personally I'm trying to get a lot of the barrel flavor, which can be muted a bit with the paper filter. I would hardly call it one note though...it seems you just like more subtle flavors. I could barely taste any barrel in the modern times beans, which does happen with some batches of dark matter as well time to time. I think theyre still trying to figure out how to do it best.

Just sat down and read this whole thread after stopping at FFF today to grab some Rue D'Floyd.

Dear God I love the shitshow!

Also an important thing to state, don't buy Floyd division 1, as it's the worst FFF beer I have had to date (infected bullshit included), and...

while at the kiosk getting beer I told them I wasn't gonna be able to make it to DLD this year due to the date change so they just sold me my full allotment including a BVDL and only charged me 70 bucks since I won't take up space at the festival or get to hear the bands.

    Cheers!

So do people actually like Dark Lord? Or does everyone just get tickets for the bottle share and variants?

Some people seem to actually like it. Some think you need to be in the mood for it. Some like it for trade bait. Most people seem to despise it. (I count myself in the trading camp, but I think it's an okay beer if you know what you're in for).

Most people go for a combination of the bands, taps, the now-guaranteed variant, and especially the bottle share.
