Great Lakes is finally getting into canning. First up is Rally Drum Red in 16 oz.

Glad to see them starting cans, and hopefully this means Turntable and Dortmunder aren't far behind for Spring and Summer time.

Just a heads up, the Ugli cans are a taproom release next Saturday the 25th. They say they'll go fast as it's 2 cases per person. Not sure if it will see distribution or not.

Harpoon?! Yikes! Rogue might as well be brewing it.

Harpoon, Rogue, Great Lakes... pretty much the same type of brewery for their region (to me anyway); "legacy" breweries trying to stay relevant in the uber-competitive craft beer realm.

I know that canned beer is (oddly) all the rage these days, but it just doesn't move the needle for me. I'd rather just have some Nosferatu, or Chill Wave that didn't have off flavors.

Why's the canned part odd? Lighter material, no skunking via light penetration, lots of pluses, with the possible downside of not having a bottle cap to collect.

Since GLBC draft is so drastically different from their bottles, I've always wondered if their packaging was tainting their beers. Maybe this will give us an easy comparison...?

I don't really wanna get into the whole can vs. bottle shit-show in this thread. All I'll say is I prefer bottles, but if I really want something sold in a can, I'll still buy it.

Wow, I didn't know it was that divisive of a topic. Anyway, I hope there's an obvious beer that's had QC bottle issues in the past that they also can, so I can at least do a mental side-by-side, if not a literal one.

They are locked because they are old. Any thread that is inactive after a period of time is automatically locked. I didn't read all the threads but just because something is locked doesn't mean it was controversial.

One thing in common with those threads is age.

I think every region has their brewery that started putting canning on the map regionally, and maybe Oskar Blues and CCB were early larger scale craft progenitors, but with highly in demand breweries like Alchemist and Tree House, (and later Trillium switching format), getting mailed all around the world, people and breweries quickly realized cans weren't just for AALs

I know there were some bumps in aluminum supply and can manufacturing, but with it getting kicked up, and Crowlers further showing people the possibilities, the options for packaging had to look appealing to a lot of brewers that already experienced and accepted other quality craft brews in cans.

So many decent, to hyped, to respected Ohio breweries are even flooding shelves with cans now it's become pretty acceptable, and now we've even got the likes of Speedway Stout in cans. :grimacing: I think with that alone, the scale has tipped decisively.

On the topic of cans, how has no one mentioned how awesome those Hop Stalker cans were? Probably my favorite IPA released in Ohio, with the wet hopped Trail Head right behind it.

Can, bottle, party ball (see Coors Light 1989) - who cares? If it tastes good, drink it.

How did I miss these? Stalker in bottles was fantastic, so I can assume the cans were even better.

Funny enough, the 2 beers that made me love cans in the first place, were BL Lime and Summer Shandy... had a definitively different (BETTER) taste from a can. I know not craft beer, but 5 years ago, those were the best summertime beers I could think of.

I think Stalker this past year was as good as any. As far as cans go, I like them because they are practical, e.g. I don't mind imbibing straight from the vessel.
