Okay, so I saw this thread, Top Five Beers You Want To See in Cans, and wondered why it would matter - y'know - is it just the novelty of it, does it taste better, or what? Did a search (due diligence) and found this thread: Cans vs. Bottles, but didn't really feel like reading past the first few entries  (you know how that goes), and from the posts I read (*yawn*) it didn't do much insofar as explaining why cans are so "hip" :sunglasses: these days... Then, just today in WBAYDN, saw a post from @SanFranJake for a bourbon barrel quad in a can  which just seemed weird to me... I dunno why - so I figured, start a poll! :grinning:

--> On any given day, for any given beer, what would you rather pour it out of - a can or a bottle?

Feel free to provide your rationale.

    Cheers

    P.S., I went with bottle...

I vote cans because: light pollution isn't a concern, and they are lighter and don't break easily so they are easier to transport. Additionally, beers (think Heady Topper) can taste excellent out of a can and still give you the aroma in an adequate manner, whereas this just doesn't happen when drinking from a bottle. Basically cans win in every parameter that really matters to me.

I like the cans for stuff I'm going to drink right away, but for cellaring a bottle just feels right.

I'd much rather buy in a can. Easier to ship, haul, open. Won't break.

Pretty much all has been said for my can reasoning.

I prefer cans for the reasons mentioned above but if I'm pouring a nice thick BA imperial stout, I've it to think it'll taste better from a bottle than a can.

It all goes into a glass anyways.....where is the 'whatever option is cheaper' option? ha.

Cans make more sense in every aspect except taste. So that being the most important aspect I voted bottles. I just like bottled beer better.

Cans. Simply more efficient any* way you slice it.

*Except maybe to age beer. I'm just not knowledgeable enough to comment on how a can liner interacts with beer over say, a few years (probably because, personally, I have no interest in aging beer). For some reason, it seems a bit sketchy to me.

I could go either way, since I always pour into a glass, but cans are lighter easier to store and make less noise in my garbage can....but I love bombers, so you can see why I'm torn

Bottles. I've been collecting bottle caps for the last few years, and just started home brewing so now I'm saving the glass for reuse too.

    Depends on the situation.
I went with bottle, mostly because it's hard to share a can at a bottleshare...

That being said, some of my favorite beers come in cans.

I think I prefer cans for just about everything except barrel-aged and bottle-conditioned brews. But yeah, I agree it still feels strange seeing some imperial styles in cans. I'm sure that'll change over time though.

Given a choice, I will take the can every time. Most of what I drink only comes in bottles, so it's not usually an issue, but I often get Sierra Nevada Torpedo 16oz cans. It was a paradigm shift for me, for the longest time I thought only crap light came in cans.

I did a quick non-scientific study last summer with Yuengling, I opened a can and a bottle at the same time, admittedly I didn't know the dates on them, but the can was better, just tasted fresher and cleaner.

The new brewery slated to open this spring near me is going cans only.

New cans don't impart a crappy flavor, they keep air and light out, they are lighter to ship, easier to ship due to their shape and are better for the environment. I'm a can convert and I'm not ashamed to say it!

I'm all for cans and glad more and more craft breweries are turning to cans over bottles. Most of my local Florida breweries it seems have turned to cans over bottles and I love it.

I've seen a few breweries do Crowlers; 32oz can growlers that they seal at the bar. Kind of awesome.

Canned IPAs stay fresh longer. The effects of light and air are mitigated and they fit into refrigerators better. Cans win for portability and recycling ease as well.
    Cheers!

Can if it's a 12 oz choice, but love bigger formats as well. It's a recycling thing, bottles are f'ing heavy. Six bottles and a cardboard sleeve...

I agree. I drink a lot of Sculpin and I can tell the difference between them blindly, can vs. bottle. Bottle is much better. Actually I can do the same for Big Eye IPA, and Nooner Pils. All blind. I drive my wife nuts with blind taste setups.

I only drink fresh stuff so many of the alleged advantages of cans regarding freshness are minimized or moot.
