I've only been once, but nobody around me seemed willing to share in line before entering the festival; I probably got there at like 10, probably not the prime sharing time as I assume all the die hard bottle sharers arrive much earlier. I did have a decent bottle out in plain sight I was drinking to try and get people to notice to share, no dice.

Most of the shares I got throughout the day were people offering pours to cut the line in front of me. Also, I just happened to overhear a conversation of some folks who literally live 5 minutes from me and I jumped in and they started sharing bottles.

I never did enter the bottle sharing tent because I wanted to use up my vouchers...at the same time, is it frowned upon to enter the tent if I don't have much to share?

I usually pop a bomber of something, get my group's pours, and then offer around us. Usually people are pretty receptive but if not, I'll walk the line. I've never had a problem finding people to share with.

this is true. i think people are reading too much into the sharing aspect of DLD. there isn't a science or formula. just open a bottle of something you brought, walk around and talk to people. that worked very well for me last year.

Bottle sharing isn't implied in a lot of cases. You at least have to make an effort, especially to share your beers. I for one, would never go up to a random person and ask for a pour of their beer. I would however ask if they would like a pour of mine and hope they reciprocate. If they simply say "no thanks" I just move on, assuming they don't want to share.

What happenes most of the time is someone will say "no, but do you want a pour of this?"

I've tasted some amazing beers by simply walking around with a can of daisy cutter because i was a noob.

Last year, we welcomed someone to our group because they asked if we wanted to try a pipeworks shelf beer. We all declined, but told them that any thing was fair game we had open, which was substantial.

And line sharing is the easiest. You just ask every single person around you if they want to try your beer.

Exactly. I usually end up having to turn down several offers throughout the course of the day just to avoid getting completely wrecked. Not being involved in the sharing of beer seems harder to me than being involved in the sharing of beer at Dark Lord Day. Maybe it's just bad timing and really bad luck for those that have had a problem with it.

Line share is excellent, especially when you're in the serpentine line.

I also love just walking around inside sharing, stopping and talking to random people, offering up beer.

And in reality, my walking around with Pliny bottle has netted me new friends that I still talk to and trade with 3 years later.

Be social, talk to people, have good beer that people might like. It doesn't take whalez to meet friendly beer people.

Pretty sure the only problem last year was the fire alarm constantly going off cause folks were smoking pot. Some people have never stayed in a smoke-free hotel before I guess....

The stoners probably thought smoke-free meant there's no charge to smoke there.

Bottle share tip, only tip you need ever for any bottle share...OK applies to pretty much all of your life:

    Don't be a douche.

    Example of being a douche:
Guy 1 - "Hey man, do you want a pour of this?"
Guy 2 - "Is that the barrel aged one?"
Guy 1 - "No man, sorry its just the regular but its really good."
Guy 2 - "That beer sucks!"

I was there, I witnessed it. Just because you think a beer sucks, doesn't mean you have to be a douche to someone who thought the beer was really good. Simply reply with something like, "Hey I appreciate it, but I'm trying to not get completely hammered." or "Thanks a lot, but I have had that one before, save the pour for someone who hasn't."

No need to be a douche.

Having a beard and drinking craft beer does not equal entitlement to be Douchey McDouche.

And, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Hope to see you fellers there, will be pouring plenty of good beer.
    Cheers

You can get them on Amazon. I bought a few for last year. They're actually for wine glasses. Search "wine yoke" there are a bunch on there. https://www.amazon.com/WineYoke-Par...8&qid=1490123007&sr=8-2&keywords=wine+lanyard

EDIT* Sorry I was a few pages behind. Looks like I'm a bit late to the party on this one.

I still maintain bottle sharing seems like luck of the draw (with much better odds earlier in the day), the first year I was berated by some great people we met (who were sharing a whole lot of loons) for not bringing any New Glarus, in particular they wanted spotted cow. Since then I've been turned down more often than not when offering up NG R&D beers.

So there tends not to be as much sharing in the afternoon? I unfortunately got Group E tix and was planning on getting there around 1pm. Thoughts/Recommendations? This is my first year.
