No so much roasty, but dark fruits like raisins and prunes and dried cherries. I think a hint in the background would be good, but too much would be a weird ESB

I know we're not trying to clone Fuller's, but for some reason I swear I remember hearing that they use Simpson's Dark Crystal, which is rated 70-80L. Possibility my memory is fading, but if I am correct I am throwing that out there because I don't think a significant amount of C80 is out of style.

Thanks for the follow up. I did an experimental IPA with a big slug of 80L, and I get where you're coming from on the dark fruit aspect. I had it in mind that for this style there would be some subtle "bitterness"/roastiness coming from the grains, complimented by the hops finish, but I don't see that happening much.

I've had Fuller's London Pride, but not ESB. Not the same animal from what I can tell.

    Thanks again / Cheers

I'm not sure if you know this or not but dig around into Fuller's brewing practices, especially partigyle brewing. Amazing the difference in beers being collected off the different runnings of the same mash.
