Um, I'll say it again: no thanks! The stigma alone makes one cringe at paying over .20 cents an ounce for straight malt liquor. This screams gimmicky. Hell, why doesn't Founders market this as a 40 ounce screw top?

My gawd.........barrel aging a Colt 45 and St. Ides knock-off? Where the hell is Ice Cube and Billy Dee Williams?

BTW: You do understand that malt liquor makes your breath stink?

Man it's beer, I don't really think Founders is in the game to mess around and blow their foot off. When you have so many good barrel aged beers under your belt you could lay back out why would you do DKML, obviously they thought it was good. Why waste money putting a shitty beer in a barrel (I know, lots of breweries do it). I will try it. I passed on Frootwood, mainly because I am not a big cherry person, but found it on tap and thought it was pretty good. Worse case scenario is if this sucks I will put it in the freezer to chill then drink it over ice like my grandmother used to do with her Colt 45.

This sounds interesting. If they can come up with a high ABV medium-bodied brew with some light sweetness, decent bourbon barrel and hop presence, a dry finish, and none of that nasty fusel alcohol character, I'm in.

Me thinks this is going to be a love or hate brew for most people. probably myself included. Wheat/belgiums are the only thing that I can say "meh" about and still drink here and there. Not ran into really any dark/barrel aged/high ABV beers that I can say that about. I either love them and want to drink them, or I just seem to pass altogether.

From Founders standpoint, I feel like they should realize that they really need to hit this out of the park just so that people don't say "...well, as expected I guess."

Plenty of beer trends may have seemed a little silly right at first. Just you wait, by this time next year everyone is going to be jumping on the BA'd malt liquor bandwagon. :grinning:

Lately there has been a bunch of craft Mexican style light lagers, so why not craft malt liquor? :stuck_out_tongue::rolling_eyes:

Looking forward to this Founders brew, though will probably only be seeking out a 4 pack instead of two 4 packs, unless I really like it after trying.

I'm as big a Founders hater as anyone, but this is interesting. I'll definitely do a 12oz. of this if I can find it (though I'm not quite curious enough for a 750 or a whole four-pack).

I mean, if it doesn't, you can roshambo with someone and you'll have your great balls of fire regardless.

I, for one, will be trying this.

The people that are throwing their panties in a tussle over "malt liquor= bad product" is HILARIOUS. Because every malt liquor is terrible... Because every adjunct pale lager is bad...
They think "Colt 45" or "Steel Reserve" and think it will be just as bad as that. I hate to break it to you, but you can make quality versions of these products. And knowing the reputation of this brewery i'd imagine it tastes pretty good as well.

Adjunct lager just means it contains corn or some other carb source for fermentation help. Doesn't dictate any hopping schedule, any other malt present, or the fermentation schedule. Same goes for malt liquor.

I bet this is pretty solid. I bet.

Yep, exactly. I've had some really good craft "malt liquor" from local, respectable breweries such as Smuttynose and The People's Pint. They actually fall more in line with the "American strong ale" side of things, most of the time, with high ABV, good malt/hop balance and decent body. They're just usually a lighter color, unlike the poster child for ASAs, Arrogant Bastard.

You would hope that before putting DKML out on the market that they refined the recipe and tested the hell out of it. They don't need it to be a raging success that creates cult following. Although that would be best scenario, all it has to do is sell out in a month or two to make it worthwhile. This doesn't fully explain how Lizard and Frootwood made it to market, but we can hope for one of out of three.

With skipping beers like this and Doom, I'll be able to spend more on CBS. Thanks Founders!

Not in novelty 40's? Go brew shitty beer elsewhere, Founders.

A bourbon barrel aged malt liquor in a bomber? How long before Founders just releases pure grain alcohol?

Books & Brews in Indianapolis beat them to the punch for a BBA malt liquor, with #IAMSORRY, but Founders' certainly has a much longer reach. It's definitely not an automatic recipe for disaster, despite folks' stereotypes about malt liquor; I'm cautiously optimistic.
