    Hello Everyone at NBS.

I always consider this to be on of the most passionate threads.

Today beverage is a beer from Magnify brewing.

We are looking a Dr. Citra.

    Brewers Notes:
Dr. Citra - This 5.9% IPA is a twist on our beloved Dr 'Saic. We swapped Mosaic hops for Citra in this beer. Brewed with oats and hopped significantly and exclusively with Citra, you know exactly what to expect.

    My Notes:
This beer was canned on 6/30 so still super fresh. My friend actually saved me this can so im really glad I was able to try this. Nose is full of dank citra hops with notes of tropical fruits. Body is haze for days with a beautiful and bright color. The use of oats really help add to a creamy mouth-feel. The finish is smooth and clean with just a slight bit of black pepper and a gentle dryness on the back end. Damn excellent use of Citra hops,This is pretty damn awesome stuff.

    Cheers and Happy NBS

Greetings,.fellow NBSers, and thanks to @lordofthewiens for getting us underway,

Yes, kids say the damndest things. When I was about 6, making my brother about 3, our parents took us on a weekend up the Yakima Valley to Toppenish, where we toured the Yakama (that's how they spell it) Tribe's museum and cultural center. At some point, someone started playing some traditional music over the building's speakers - lots of chanting and singing with a very "tribal" beat. Apparently my brother had already been exposed to some "Cowboys and Indians" type movies, as he grew very concerned, then fearfully asking, "Mom, are there still any bad Indians?" My Mother was mortified and began a display of various shades of red.

I'm a little red today from walking down to the downtown library yesterday afternoon when the temperature was nearly 100°. In a rare moment of clarity I chose to ride the bus back home. The official high at the airport was 99 for the day, but amongst the downtown buildings and the asphalt, I'm sure it topped the century mark. Right now it's a sunny 85, with predictions of 90 today. Hopefully that's enough of a respite for those fighting the usual wildfires in the region.

I'm still finishing my coffee. I struggled with insomnia in the overnight heat and didn't fall into a deep sleep until after 4am. But I did hit a new beer last night, an Imperial Stout from eastern Oregon:

Interesting beer. Drank like a cross between a RIS and an Irish Dry Stout, with the 9.5% alcohol very well hidden.
Edit: Apparently, I will have to start giving Photobucket money to post pics thru them onto BA. Hell with that.

Really glad you dug that one! These guys are for real, too. Unfortunately that's the only beer not on draught these days, so I can't really send out any of their lagers, other sours or hoppy brews. They totally nail everything that they do, like they deep down understand what makes each style tick, and just how to achieve it.

No new beer for me at the moment, as I'm doing some gardening while sipping a can of that Boson de Higgs. Seems to be doing the job .

    Good afternoon NBS!

Got some ribs on the grill and settling into review #250. Blue Mountain, my favorite local brewery, is celebrating their 10th year in operation and so released 3 commemorative beers. This is the 3rd and apparently the first in a new series of theirs. It's an "imperial" witbier that was aged in Pertit Verdot and Cognac barrels with raspberry puree.

Color is a lovely purplish-red with a dark pink head that faded quickly away. Smells tart, a little sweet, notes of red wine, and primarily notes of raspberries. Taste is tart, features the red wine and raspberry mix which actually nicely compliments each other, and finishes with a hint of oat and wheat. Tartness tends to linger a bit on the palette. Lighter body, easy drinker. If this is indeed part of a new series I wouldn't mind the chance to pick it up each summer.

Speaking of necessity, that's actually how I started to come up with doing those blends. This way I wouldn't be trying to guess which beer is which when doing a blind tasting. Then it developed into a bit of unnecessary fun as well. It's great to see somebody carrying on the tradition .

    Yet another new beer today.

And yet another one from Magnify.

This ones Double Dry Hopped Surprise Surprise

    Brewers Notes:
Surprise, Surprise is a summertime Imperial IPA, meaning it has a lighter body and is slightly drier than most of our Imperial IPAs while still being insanely juicy. We hopped this beer with Idaho 7, Amarillo, Mosaic Powder and a new hop called Michigan Copper, that gives notes of Hawaiian Punch (for real, google it).

    My Notes:
    YES!

    Cheers!

From a coffee-infused DIPA to a BBA TIPA. Why not?

First off, allow me to ask: 12.4%?!?!? Really??? Wow, that's an insanely high ABV for an IPA, and it really doesn't come across as that high on the palate (which is a testament to the skill with which it was brewed).

This beer is kind of two different experiences in one.

Up front, it's reminiscent of DFH's Burton Baton: oak and vanilla from the barrel, caramel malt, citrus and pine from the hops.

The back end, however, features the bourbon, including strong notes of toasted coconut.

It's a one-two punch unique in the realm of IPAs.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Truly unique. One-and-done. :stuck_out_tongue:

Alan Alchemist a Saison named for a loyal patron at Trap Rock the local brew pub. This beer is brewed with ginger, black pepper and honey and clocks in at 7% ABV. This is well brewed beer. The ginger, pepper and honey are all there but none of them overpowers the other 2. Excellent beer

Thx to Lordoftheweins for an actually laugh out loud introduction today. In the interest of honesty, I too am not wearing underpants.

I'm gonna be trying a Berliner today to make up for having to miss yesterday's tasting, but having just finished up some yard work I'm going to start with Von Trapp's new, limited edition, Kolsch Style Ale (you sticklers will be glad to see that "style" is written almost as prominently as "Kolsch". I really like VT in general so I'm expecting this to be great. It clocks in at 5% ABV and 28 IBUs and describes itself as "A little of Austria, a lot of Vermont" which makes me think this won't be going out of it's way to adhere exactly to style. Hops are listed as Tettnanger and Hallertau.

It pours surprisingly cloudy with a very light straw color. There's a nice, tightly puffy head that leaves a lot of lacing for about the first third of the glass before tapering off. It's got a great nose with bready malts and a very spicy (almost peppery) hop aroma with some hints of orange/lemon and grass thrown in. Taste follows suit with even more of a hop bite - this is surprisingly bitter and leaves a nice "puckery" feeling in the cheeks before finishing clean with a nice hint of more bready malt as it fades. Mouthfeel is crisp but not supercrisp with moderate carbonation. If I tasted this blind I think I'd be almost as likely to guess Pilsner as Kolsch.

A delicious beer and something I'll be buying again though in my fairly limited Kolsch experience I'd say this is a bit hoppier and not quite as crisp and clean as beers like Reissdorf, Goody Two Shoes or Sierra Nevada's kolsch. I'm going to tag @AlcahueteJ on this since I know he's a big Kolsch fan and may not have had this yet.

    Happy Sunday all!

KCBC's Taco Wednesday is an IPL with a grassy aroma a a whiff of lemon. The carbonation is superfine. The flavors are cracker-like malt and some citrus hop, (lemon and tangerine). The finish is very dry. This has delicate aspects and is very refreshing. I actually enjoyed this with grilled fish tacos, on a Sunday alas or I would have done something right.

I've always had a sweet spot for LH Brewing after a great visit there a couple of years ago, so I when I saw this in the store yesterday I decided this would be my NBS. This bottle says best by 8/12/17.

Pours orange/gold with microscopic head bubbles and nice lacing.
Aroma is mild orange, brown sugar and alcohol pushing through it all.
Front end of the taste is alcohol giving way to a complex malt vs. hop battle. The finish is pure orange peel, I guess the hops win.
Mouth feel is quite coating, almost creamy. Just the right amount of carbonation at the back of the tongue to clear things out.
This is a good beer, but I think the alcohol notes are a little too pushy. Almost 10%, but tastes higher.

Happy NBS, fellow beer reviewers and conversationalists. And thank you, @lordofthewiens for an intro that made me smile. My kids and 25 and 23 and I miss their interesting, and often off-hand comments. My new beer today is Cape May Brewing's The Scupper, a Saison aged in red wine barrels. It is well-conceived and crafted and it's the best beer I've had from Cape May. My rating, below, is a little below the mean but that's probably a function of the small sample. For me, it's a really good rating.

    4.43/5 rDev -1.6%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Poured from 750 ml bottle into Cape May pint glass. It pours a turbid, muddy apricot color with a finger of creamy, milk-white head and lots of lacing with excellent retention. I was really impressed with the head, which remained creamy and attractive throughout the pour. It has a decidedly oaky nose along with lemon, banana, coriander, clove, and a whiff of red wine; it's quite fragrant. The taste is both complex and pleasing. I anticipated mostly Saison to start but instead the first thing I taste is the red wine barrel and a touch of honey. There are also plenty of anticipated Saison flavors, banana, clove, and coriander, and the Brettanomyces give it a distinct funk. It finishes with note of bitterness. For a Saison, it has a particularly creamy mouth feel with moderate carbonation, and the 7.4% ABV allows for easy drinking. Overall, I'm very impressed. This Ale is well-conceived and crafted and delivers a lot of flavor. It would pair well with a meal of steamed or broiled seafood, corn on the cob, and red potatoes, or for casual outdoor drinking with friends.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beers as much as I am. Cheers, my friends!

Good afternoon, all, and Happy New Thai Style Iced Tea Sunday! Thank you, @lordofthewiens, for that hilarious opening and for setting a high standard for today. I don't think I've ever enjoyed Page 1 of NBS so much. Now on to the first new beer of the day: Thai-Style Iced Tea Ale. I picked up the Beer Camp Across the World variety pack on the way home from church this morning, and there is no way I wasn't going for this one right out of the box. An SN / Mikkeller collaboration, this is an amber ale brewed with lactose, orange peel, tamarind, star anise, and Ceylon black tea. Poured at fridge temp from the bottle into whatever this thing is:

Cold, this was very malt forward on the nose and palate with a little sweet orange zestiness. As it warmed toward cellar temperature, however, the orange and spices became more assertive, particularly the star anise. I drank this in small sips, which I let warm on the tip of my tongue for a few seconds. This really allowed the spicy character of the beer to come through. There was quite a bit of orange-zest bitterness, with a ton of heat from the spices and alcohol (7.2% ABV) that never seemed to fade. The black tea makes for an astringent finish, with some lingering fruity sweetness from the lactose and orange peel. The uniqueness of this alone makes it worth a try.

L-The beer pours a raspberry pink..shocking. There is a quickly dissapating 1 finger white head. No lacing is apparent.
S-A sweet rasberry nose hits you strong and overwhelms any presence of the listed lime addition.
T- On the palate it's a pretty even mix of lactic sourness and tart raspberry. Not in any way sweet unlike the nose. I get a bit of lime in the aftertaste, but it's faint and hard to pick up.
F- Feel is light and the carbonation is prickly. The sourness makes it finish kinda dry. Something you have to sip and not something you are probably gonna want multiples of at a sitting.
O- Hits on most of what it promises. Sour beer fans will like it, but will not be something for sour beer novices.

It's such a lovely day, why not review another new beer? I'm impressed with Tomfoolery Brewing in Hammonton, NJ. I really enjoyed their Barleywine, IPA, and Hefeweizen. This is NoSoBo (Not So Old Bohemian), a Bohemian-style pilsner. This is not a style I drink a lot of but I enjoyed it. I can't provide the detail that @JackHorzempa did earlier today or that @utopiajane provides regularly. My full review is below. I anticipate that Tomfoolery will make a fine name for itself. In addition, Hammonton, New Jersey is becoming a beer-drinker's destination. It's currently the home of Tomfoolery and Three 3's, and I've heard another brewery will be opening soon I'm genuinely excited!

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into Tomfoolery tulip glass. It pours a hazy, honey color with a thin, bright white head and minimal lacing. It smells of pilsner malt and cracker. It's a solid pilsner nose. For me, it's hard to review a pilsner. This one has the pleasing, bready, pilsner malt flavor with a slight bitterness at the finish. It's a lite, crisp, brew with moderate carbonation, and a sessionable ABV of 5% Overall, it's simply a well-crafted, solid, and thoroughly enjoyable pilsner from an up and coming brewer.

    New IPA Sunday (Week 646)
    Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Gorgeous day, bright sun, high clouds, warm but not hot temps. Hope things are the same by you. What a day for a new beer. And a new brewery;

Just an admission to start this. District 96 is a new brewery that is putting out some of the finest beer in this state already. Friends and I have kinda talked about keeping our mouths shut about it, since there are already lines at some of the other breweries making beer that isn't as fine. I was on board with that, but fuck it, man, that isn't advocacy, and this site is all about beer advocacy, so that is out the window.

District 96 opens their tap room officially tomorrow and I was lucky to be able to share the unofficial festivities in the beautiful space they have this weekend with John and Chase and about 10 other patrons Not gonna keep silent about this. If you are anywhere near New City, New York (Rockland County) you owe it to yourself to visit these wonderful folks. They deserve every bit of success we can bring them, even if it means we don't get easy access in future.

Today's beer is one that is new to me, even though I had it on cask with pineapple and coconut previously. Called Yuuuge. This is the non cask, non fruit addition version and it is every bit as good as the cask version, although the carb. level is higher, and the fruitiness is all hops.
Cloudy dark straw, almost murky, topped by two fingers of actively bubbling foam that slowly relaxes to a thick cap and leaves slathers of itself clinging to the inside of the glass like some crazy wallpaper bas relief shaving cream.

Okay you may have read the descriptor tropical aroma, THIS is a fucking tropical aroma. Mango, pineapple, ripe melon, sweet citrus, crisp grainy sweet, hints of sweet floral, and a balancing dollop of pith combine perfectly into a bouquet that turns on the salivary glands like spraying ether into an engine as ignition fires.

Amazing full flavored taste that is a perfectly balanced, bright, clean as a whistle rendition of all the flavors in the aroma. This is as good as it gets. One is enticed into the next sip as means of confirming that the memory of the perfection of last sip was accurate. End of sip is juicy but there is some pith in it to balance without turning it bitter.

Mouthfeel is where the District 96 crew put an exclamation point to the statement of delectability that are the aroma and taste. Low/med. carb. quite viscous, yet soft on palate, super refreshing, interesting flavors, and a finish that creates desire for next sip that is impossible to deny.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass, Cheers!
