Thank you for the quick reply. I'll probably just spend more money on the Oktoberfest now.

Okay, but clearly this pack isn't for us, right? It's for the more casual drinkers, the new-to-SN drinkers, the ones who will crush this on the weekend.

I just saw SN's Oktoberfest on the shelves and was wondering about their fall line up. It's usually around this time of year I get excited for the fall seasonals. Sad to see that's SN won't be doing one this year. Gonna miss tumbler!

sigh. Gonna miss both the Vienna Lager and the Tumbler. I wish people liked the "boring" beers more.

I'll also miss Tumbler. It's one of my favorite Autumn beers! I'd definitely buy a sixer if I could.

I think we read about this months ago - I would assume overall business decisions lead to seeing less of the obscure beer geek styles like Kolsch, Vienna lager and brown ale (kind of ridiculous to say these are now obscure but its hoppy or die world). Luckily SN still puts out the Oktoberfest, but I wonder if they are testing out a pumpkin beer while we speak.

It seems to me they are chasing the 'bigger' craft beer market vs. the beer geek (e.g., BA) market.

There is an old story of somebody asking George (Baby Face) Nelson: why do you rob banks? He responded: "Because that is where they keep the money!"

Yup, Sierra Nevada wants to go where they "keep the money". I personally can understand that.

    Cheers!

I may spend too much time on the internet reading what people have to say about our beer, but... I honestly can't tell if the linked thread is sarcastic or not. Sadly, most days I sort of expect the worst.

I would buy - weekly - something like a Sam Adams 6 beer x2 pack with all of the somewhat abandoned SN beers - Kolsch, Vienna, Coffee Stout, Tumbler, Ruthless Rye plus Pale Ale (if it was necessary). @sierranevadabill - would something like that ever have a chance of happening?

I didn't think about the poster being sarcastic until you mentioned it. I could see that as a possibility now. Either way, I think most of us appreciate what your brewery does, whether we like a particular decision or not. No, I'm not a fan of the new pack and will miss a Fall pack this year, but that's ok.

That said, I respect Sierra Nevada and very much appreciate the information you provide in such an accessible way. It's very cool to have questions answered by people such as yourself and the person from six point, as it provides us with invaluable insight into what's going on. The only really bad thing Sierra Nevada has done is not heed the call to put your coffee stout in 6 packs! Imagine that beer next to Celebration during Christmas time!

Throw weizenbock from the first beer camp box in there. Maybe juniper black too.

As uninteresting as it is, will probably pick one up as I find all of those very drinkable and it is good to have around the house when I have company come over. And that poster is probably right, that wouldn't be a bad year round sampler to have out.

I'll be honest. That Drinking Buddies varietal pack looks like it was made for the Costco customer. Yeah. I can't fault that because the volume of those sales and the potential for new customers are important, and being the first 'wow' experience for some beer noob is vital for longevity.
Us little buyers (who may be geeky) want the six packs of boring perfectly executed styles that demand a more traditional muted color palate and who support the stores who aren't selling a pallet of cases a week are feeling a little lost with how SN is navigating these waters.

Bill, I have communicated with BA Troutbeerbum in the past and he seems to me to be a straight shooter. I think he is genuinely happy and impressed by your new variety pack. I am willing to bet that this new pack will sell well for the casual craft beer market (e.g., Costco shoppers).

I suggest that you carefully track the sales of this pack and with that data consider making this variety pack a year-round product.

    Cheers!

    Jack

All this has got me thinking about picking up a six pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale next store run.

We carefully track the sales and data for all of our beers, especially, the larger-released packs. I'm eager to see how this one does. As stunning as it may seems to this BA community, there are still a LOT of people who aren't aware that we make any beers other than Pale Ale. Even Torpedo -- good ol' nearly 10-year best-selling IPA in the country Torpedo-- is foreign to a lot of folks. This pack was designed for them. We're watching and waiting. Time will tell.
