Tweak from Avery, have been wanting to try this one. Like Mephistopheles and the coffee add on intrigued me

Bottled on Nov. 14, 2016 poured into a teku glass

Syrupy, black motor oil liquid. One finger light brown rich foam cap. Some lacings

Aroma of sweet bourbon, tobacco, coffee

Taste of roast malts, bourbon, coffee

Smooth, some sudsing, 16% abv well hidden, coffee and bourbon linger on the tongue, doesn’t burn. It’s a sipper not a chugger

    Really nice beer, repeatable

Good afternoon NBS and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the inspiration this morning. The notion of a second, third, fourth act in life is something my wife and I discuss on occasion, We believe with grown kids, our health, and a solid relationship that we are on our third act, plotting that evasive next phase. Congrats to the good doctor on his next act.
My sweetheart was in Saratoga NY for work and brought home a canned offering from Artisanal Brew Works, She knows I like a good simple brown ale and the brewer delivered just that. Not earth shattering but flavorful and easy to get your head around. No flaws in this offering and in a style that is hard to hide one if there was.
    Cheers all

    BB Brown

    Artisanal Brew Works
American Brown Ale / 5.40% ABV

    3.65/5 rDev 0% | Score: 3.67
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Poured from a can dated 8/24 into the test glass.
A - Red cedar, rust colored brown, nice clarity and gentle carbonation. A quick to exit cap can be coaxed out with some
    effort.
S - Lightly roasted malt, an ever so slight hint of brown sugar, some earthy notes from the hops, Goldings and Fuggle maybe.
T - Just enough toasted malt, the flavors reside in a narrow band, with some nuttiness on the edges.
M - Light in body, a sweet start is quickly dried out, the carbonation is easy, acting as tour guide rather than usher. Lingering on are just enough dark rye toast notes to keep the experience interesting
O - A well done brown ale, A style I really enjoy. This offering is screaming cask condition, The packaged version is plenty enjoyable, and pairs well with this fall weather.

Greetings from Colorado NBS friends! A tip of the cap to @lordofthewiens for getting things started. I'm back in my hotel room after running a 5k in the fine city of Denver this morning. I love races that have beer at the finish, but unfortunately not this one. Only chocolate and condiments as that's the theme of the Hot Chocolate 5/15k. I've run this race for the third year in a row here and finally hit the board placing in my age group. The altitude and elevation gain kicked my ass once again, so it's time for a well deserved beer.

A 120z. can of Odell Brewing Rupture fresh grind ale. The can has a best by date of 01/05/18, no abv. on the label. Pouring in my road weary Storm Peak glass for the occasion.

It pours a slightly hazy but brilliant gold with two generous fingers of creamy white foam that slowly settles revealing heavy lacing. The smell is peach, mango, floral and grapefruit. Taste is much the same with a dose of chewy malt in the finish. The feel is crisp and clean like a lager with a slight hop bite.

A very easy drinking palate pleasing pale that has a earthy floral profile like a wet hop. I'm guessing from the grinding of hops they explain on the label? The perfect post run beer which happens to be the 500th review for me! My score is 4.04 / rDev-2.4%.

Driving up to Estes Park later today so I'm not sure if there will be another today? The weather is beautiful in Denver now, but there's heavy snow in the mountains. It may be a fun drive?:open_mouth: Have a great day, here's the official scorecard.....

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! Yesterday I got to try one of the more bitter Veil brews (We Ded Mon), and today I'm trying their no-bitterness ipa. This one has been on my radar for awhile, if only for the novelty.

    The Veil - IREALLYdon'twanttoBU
    Ddh IPA - 6.9% abv
    Canned 9/18/17 (13 days ago)
    Rating: 4.18 (-4.1% rDev)

L - 3-finger bright white head lingers for quite some time above a murky orange body. A thick cobweb of lacing remains after the head recedes.

S - citrus, pineapple. Very tropical.

T - Orange and pineapple candies. It's very sweet! They aren't kidding about 0 IBUs. I don't get any bitterness at all.

    F - Thick, creamy body.

O - I definitely prefer the more bitter Veil IPAs to this no-bitterness brew, but it's still an enjoyable drinking experience. Reminds me a lot of a milkshake ipa in terms of the sweetness and thick, creamy body.

Congratulations lordofthweins !!! I have 7.5 years to go and count every second.
I just finished washing the outside windows and spot cleaning the carpet and now it is time for a new beer. This Sunday it is "Melvin IPA" from Melvin Brewing in Wyoming. How it made its way to me I have no idea but there it was, staring at me from the second shelf. Canned on 7/27 so it I consider it plenty fresh. Smells great! Sweet and hoppy. Pours a golden orange with a generous head. As the head dissipates I see some decent lacing. The first sip is really really good. It has a New England IPA sweet smoothness with a slightly bitter West Coast finish. Very well balanced. A very enjoyable IPA. At 7.5 ABV it does not taste boozy to me. Another top tier IPA from a small brewer. I will put it on my go to list but seeing it is from Wyoming and I live in Buffalo I am not holding my breath :stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue:

    Hey what's going on?!

Hope everyone is doing well. I am having a VERY productive morning and day so far. Had some garden work to do, and made a great lunch, now I am settling down to take it easy for the rest of the day. My chuck roast has got a dry rub going on it, and will be stewing on the grill for the next hours to come.

As some of you may have seen yesterday, I was homebrewing. Went real well, just a minor issue that my induction plate could not quite hit boil, so I had to continue on my stove top instead. It's fermenting nicely now as I speak, so crossing my fingers as bottling day will be sometime away from today.

So what's new for our hero today?

    Pilsner | Manor Hill Brewing

Manor Hill Brewing - Pilsner by imbibehour, on Flickr

Poured from the can into a Libbey style pilsner glass. Canned September 7th 2017.

Pale lemon, but with a very green hue to the body color. Real good clarity, with a touch of little carbonation, and a thick rocking bleach white head. Stands a solid three fingers in height, with soapy big bubbled retention. Very nice looking beer.

Hop forward aroma for a pils, that makes a mark somewhere between grass and lemon. A bit of spritzy lemon oil like sensation on the nose

Palate has a hop forward front. Large amouts of lemon and herbal grass flavors on first sip. Chewy body with a touch of sweetness that cuts through a decisive and lingering hop bitterness. Lots of grassy aftertaste and fresh herb finish on the swallow. Mixing dough like malt for a solid backbone a touch of malt sweetness on the end gives a little contrast.

It's a hop forward German pils and while it strays a bit it's a good example of a simple amped up style.

Today's new to me beer - "Mahou Negra", a Schwartzbier from Groupo Mahou/San Miguel, Madrid, Spain:

Pours a purty brown (SRM 30) with three fingers of khaki/pale tan foam; decent retention and solid ring; moderately heavy lacing and good clarity. 4.0

Roast malt/caramel nose; otherwise clean and bready. 3.5

Flavors of lite char, burnt toast, biscuit and a touch of caramel malt sweetness; subtle bitterness - not sure if from the hops or the roast. 3.75

Medium lite body and moderate carbonation; smooth and clean feeling. 3.5

Overall a solid beer; I would have enjoyed it more with less char notes, and the burnt edges brought my scoring downward. 3.5

I believe Mrs. Z and I have finally settled into our house, and I'm finding my way 'round easily now (it helps that driving is on the right!). The only craft beer bar in town (owned by an Irish couple) is on holiday until mid October, so until then I'll start hitting up the local wine shops and supermercados to see what I can turn up for next Sunday. Cheers!

Flying Dog the fear. 9% imperial pumpkin.

After missing it the last 2 years im excited. After 2 very dark very hot coffees lets see.....

Aroma is burnt. Slight cinnamon, nutmeg is light. Very roasty. Very black coffe like. Just the way i drink it. But this is extraordinarily burnt. Slight sweetness but the blackness overpowers. The pumpkin is a more vegetal than sweet but done right.

To me, this is a dark roast pumpkin coffee with little spice but you know its there. The abv is hidden well. Depending on your preferences, this is a good choice. It wasnt a killer for me but i enjoyed its comparison to black coffee and may be the most coffee like beer ive had in 900 beers ever without having it actually in there.

    Cheers

Good afternoon all and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the opening and congratulations on the upcoming retirement. My first new beer today is Northeast Kingdom from Local Motive in Florence, SC. It is supposed to be their take on a NE IPA and clocks in at 7%. This is actually the fifth beer I have had from these guys, they opened about 3 months ago and this is by far the best. The first impression when i cracked the can and poured was who's got the weed!!! It really smells strong, taste follows suit lots of bitter grapefruit balanced by some light tropical fruit. This was their first shot at something like this and I hope they keep it on.

Appearance 4 - Pours murky orange color with thick soapy white head with lost of lacing around the glass.

Aroma 4.25- The initial aroma is weed. Tropical mango, and orange with a nice hop/pine aroma along with bitter grapefruit. The aroma is very pungent and dank.

Taste 4 - The flavors lean more toward bitter grapefruit with light tropical mango and orange. The finish is pretty bitter but still juicy up front.

Feel 4 - Medium bodied well carbonated with a slightly dry finish.

Overall - This is the best beer I have had fro these guys so far, nice balance between juicy and hoppy.

[IMG] Congratulations @lordofthewiens and excellent start. A cool evening finally last night and I chose to have this warm me up. Poured near room temperature bottled on 6/19/17 and weighing in at 11%. Pours a slick black with a solid 2 finger tan head that leaves behind nice thick wisps of lace as it slowly settles into a thin layer of bubbles, nice retention. 4.25

[IMG] Smell is smoky heat, cocoa nibs, dark fruit, sweet brown sugar, cummin, chayenne, vanilla, and some inviting alcoholic burns the nostrils a tad. 4

Taste follows spicy peppers, cocoa, dates, over done brown sugar, cummin, vanilla, and warming sweet booze lingers in the finale. 4

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, moderate carbonation, a touch dry, and for a 11% ABV drinks easy enough if you liked balanced heat. 4.25

Overall a very nice Stout, the heat could overwhelm some, but really enjoyed myself. May grab one for the cellar. 4[IMG]

Happy Sunday, BAs. New beer in my glass today from OK upstart American Solera. Been reading all kinds of praise about the brewer and their beers so I’m pumped to get my hands on a bottle. Can’t help but imagine a Hill Farmstead-like spread where barns and barrels and foeders abound. I’ve also never been to OK so my imagination is all I’ve got.

Anyone else a fan of a green bottle? Something about the seemingly counter-intuitive decision to place delicate beer in a green bottle strikes me as bold. But maybe I’m just showing my lack of knowledge...

Anyhow - Terroir Study looks like a beauty out of the bottle:

Gorgeous straw gold body; partly cloudy with lots of sunshine. The head looks light as a feather and equally soft. Hay, must, green apple, lemon and grain on the nose; taste is right there with a light kiss of musty attic.

Effervescent and lively on the tongue; slight tartness that brings a zap of flavor on the palate like a small electric shock. Dry dry dry - like a farm that hasn’t seen rain in months (imagining OK again).

Delicious and righteous. The conjuring of terroir certainly brings to mind Hill Farmstead and Jester King, and this beer can certainly hang with both. Cheers!

My Dad retired at 55. Too young to completely retire, but he had a tough job he'd grown to detest, so he only stayed a few months past when he became eligible to retire. After one tax season doing returns at a certain tax preparation behemoth (right up his street, skills-wise but unpleasant, with people bursting into tears when their refund was smaller than they expected), he found his niche in working winery tasting rooms. He was going to quit at 65 when he'd qualify for Social Security (he got screwed out of it by a Reagan Administration decision in the 80s), but kept going until almost 70, because he enjoyed the work (and the wine discount). He'd still be doing it, but the winery decided they needed to cut down staff, and the guy who only worked 3-4 days a month and was regularly giving up shifts to younger people who wanted more hours was the logical choice. He still misses it (especially his wine discount) .
