8 oz undated can poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 10.5% ABV 86 IBU per can. The beer pours dense black with sticky, persistent light brown head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves behind some lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. The taste is smooth dark chocolate and roast malt transitioning to a semisweet yet bitter finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied, adequately carbonated and mostly dry in the finish. Overall, very good. This is the best beer I've had from Flat 12. Nice RIS.

I've often thought that 8oz cans would be a perfect portion size for RIS. I bulked at 13-14 dollars a six pack but compared to bombers, that's a steal. I'm out for new beers today, enjoy what's in your glass!

That is an interesting beer, I love honey in beer and I love ESBs, but sometimes it doesn’t always work out.

Another new brew from my new store...

And a delicious state tick, this being my first Nevada beer...
Revision Brewing's Citra Revenge, a Citra single-hop DIPA (9% abv)...
Great Citra hop showcase - aromas and flavors of sweet, dark citrus pith, shellacked with a bit of light resin... Impressions are orange, tangerine, and pine... Body is fairly light, very smooth and soft... I was thinking I wasn't such a predictable Citra fanboy anymore, but this beer is a good reminder about why this is such a popular hop... Bottled 09/25/17...

That's my last new brew for the day - here's to our vets, and to a new beer in yer mitts!

    Cheers...

Mom and I are heading over to Jester King that day if the weather cooperates, and we'll definitely be peeking in here to see how the day of the dark (malt) is going. Hopefully, we can join in the fun (and double hopefully with some spontaneously-fermented concoction of evil bugs, critters, bacteria and wild yeast).

Even your grocery store photos pop?!? You graphically-trained/oriented masters really get my green-with-envy heart pumping. And I *knew* you were one of my BA cooking/food preparing motivators. Couldn't recall it for sure but I recognize. That looks like a little salmon mastery from my perch!

Happy NBS. It was 9° on Friday morning, in November! I guess we have been overdue in WI after the past 3 very mild fall and winter months. It is in the 30's today, so I will be putting on the 'snow' windows for our three season porch later today.

I have avoided pepper stouts in the past, but tried a few in the last year and found to enjoy them. Today I am trying Central Waters Space Ghost Imperial Stout.

The beer pours a dark coffee brown with a dense 2 finger tan head. Fades slowly and leaves behind some spotty lacing on my glass. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee bean, earthy hops, and bakers chocolate. I can tell this will be a roasty stout and not so much of a sweet stout. On the first sip it is all about the roasted malts and bakers chocolate. Not much caramel, but a bit of earthy hops and pepper. Then it happens, the pepper hits with heat in the back of mouth and throat, leaves a slight tingle on my lips. It seems about the same level of heat as salsa with some jalapenos, but not too hot. Feel is quite smooth and silky with a nice soft carbonation. This really is the perfect stout to sip when you are freezing cold in the dead of winter.

    Well hello there.

As with our gracious host this morning, I love to work in the kitchen, but feel a certain limitation in my ability to spontaneously invent. Similarly, I feel fairly confident in my ability to follow direction, and enjoy taking the time to indulge in said hobby, but am in constant awe at the presentations put forth by some of the regular members round these parts.
I love the idea of a dedicated pairing thread, and am excited to explore (and eventually contribute maybe why not?) to the thread(s) mentioned above.

Y'all are lucky. I work again tonight, which means that it's already past my bed time, which means you get the truncated version today.

Magnanimous IPA, from Ft. George Brewing (and Earth & Sky Farms), pours a beautiful golden amber, transforming the tulip into which it was poured to a magnificent golden bauble worthy of Don Wood or Chris Van Allsburg. Head is oddly yellowing, as nicotine stained teeth, with a fierce determination to persist, and to leave its mark as its volume is consumed.

The nose was a little underwhelming. Subtle would be one way to put it. Subdued. Light. Gentle hints of apricot and hints of earthy hops, nectarine and citrus. Soft and enjoyable, but just kind of generally lacking.

Once I began to sip however, my impression was transformed. The initial impression is a wonderful blend of piney bitter hops and a sweet mix of honey and nectar with suggestions towards that same apricot and an almost candied sweetness. Then the tongue began to roll over a bit more and the Grand Fir promised on the can was revealed. I've had a fair number of 'piney' IPAs. I've had many 'holiday ales' and the like that you nod and go 'yeah, that's what they were going for, I feel like I just took a bite off the tree being careful to avoid all the lights and whatnot,' but I am hard pressed to remember a time when I've experienced a coniferous flavour that was at once so decidedly itself, and so wonderfully folded in and blended to its surroundings. The best imagery I can come up with is an overwrought vision of a snow frosted forest with ice crystals in the forefront, and a fetching character with laughing eyes twinkling behind a high fur hem and hat, with candied fir needles on offer. Think like CS Lewis envisioning the happy version of winter. I dont' know. And I don't even like christmas.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this one and have been unable to shake the poorly rendered image alluded to above. I look forward to drinking several more of these this winter, and hope to pair it with some snow and cheer at some point.

My bet is the tiny bit of dirt-hop flavor is bigger when the beer is a bit fresher. My 6-pack isn't super old, just two months, but it does have that malt-takeover feel to it. Malt and honey takeover? But wouldn't the honey flavor subside? Too hard for me to figure.:scream::crazy_face:

I think of the few honey-added beers I've tried, this one's my favorite:

New beer #2. Another food-inspired beer.

L - minimal offwhite head doesn't last. Dark orange/brown body.

S - cotton candy, gummi worms, mixed berries. Highly unusual!

T - more gummi worms. A little salty, as it should be. Very sweet without much balancing tartness.

    F - highly carbed, medium-low body.

O - A little too sweet, and could do with some additional tartness. Still, this is very unique, and I will appreciate it for its weirdness.

I also enjoy cooking and like to make Sundays a day in the kitchen as often as I can. That's not quite the case today but I am roasting up a chicken and some vegetables for dinner.

This is my first review in a handful of months. A new beer, to me, from the fellas at Mikerphone. Check 1,2. A Northeastern IPA. Not a style I tend to be gaga over but good beer is good beer.

Mikerphone Check 1,2 is on the murky side. It's got that northeast pineapple juice thing going on. Luckily, it's not quite liquified cardboard like a lot of the Northeast IPAs out there. There's not a chance in hell of seeing through the body though. The foam takes some persuasion to form a fingers worth of pure white head that manages to stick around nicely. Each drink leaves behind some sticky, patchy lace. It's a nice looking beverage.

The nose is potent yet well rounded. It takes off with ripe pineapple and sugar cookie. A melange of tropical fruits round it out, green mango and a blast of papaya. That sugar cookie malt profile compliments all the Citra nicely. A soft peppery booziness brings with it some depth. This beer is an adult fruit basket. There's not a ton of depth, which is usually the case in these Northeast style IPAs, but what's there will get your mouth watering.

The flavor profile keeps stride with the nose. It's tropical and juicy, much like Juicy Fruit. A simple, yet satisfying, sugar cookie malt base allows the heavy handed Citra dry hopping to shine, which is the purpose, I suppose. This time around both pineapple and green mango shine. The soft booziness adds some needed spice while peach, papaya, and star fruit flit about the periphery. It's an enjoyable beer even though fairly one dimensional.

I dig the body. It's a touch shy of medium in weight with a nice soft roundness that's plush. The carbonation is dialed back and it's slick on the backend leaving some of that tropical fruit residue. A highly drinkable concoction with the mildest of bitterness.

Mikerphone makes some good beer. Check 1,2 is no exception. If I appreciated the style more I'm sure the score would be higher because it's bright and vibrant with no edges. A good tropical fruitiness and sugar cookie base make for an easy drinker while the plush body fits well. A glass of this needs a little umbrella.

Good afternoon NBS and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the opener today. I also love the time in the kitchen. We differ in that recipes here come out for the holidays, the rest of the year I run on "themes" and "experimenting" these are in quotes as that's how I hear it from my sweetheart. The weekday cooking is my job and I do enjoy it. Almost as much as I enjoy the food photos from other BA's.
Today's offering is from our friends from the north, Brasserie Dunham a very nice blended, barreled mixed culture delight.

    Assemblage No.1

    4.09/5 rDev +2.8% | Score: 3.98
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured from an undated bottle into the test glass.
A - A slightly hazy deep yellow color, column after column of tiny spheres rise relentlessly upward. A cap of 1/2 never goes away.
S - Brett, wet hay, honey, thin hint of sulfur, Cheese rine rolled with ash. A rise in temperature releases notes of white wine and apricot.
T - With all that aromatic symphony, the taste runs in a relatively narrow band, brett, some very nice minerality, a bit of orchard honey, and stone fruit.
M - Medium in body superbly carbonated, the start is tart, then quickly a sweet streeker runs through, with the hoopla, the mineral dryness is next and lingers for some time.
O - A fine Assemblage indeed, the total construct is quite delightful, the zinfandel barrel is not pronounced, the use of the mixed culture and Brett is deftly executed. The brewer avoided the Brett overload. The body is quite robust. A treat worth trying.

    Good afternoon NBS!

Glad to make this week's, started off the week last week with a stomach bug that just wouldn't shake. Yesterday was the first day of feeling fine so looking forwards to this.

First of the day, Brother's Craft Brewing's Lil' Hellion, a Helles Lager.

Pours a clear, yellow color with a bright white head that fizzes rapidly away. Smell is sweet grass, bread, and cracked wheat. Taste is a little biscuit, a touch on the sweet side, leading into a light grass/floral hops flavor and small amount of bitterness towards the finish. Finish is clean, crisp. Solid, nicely balanced, easy drinking helles lager.

Greeting NBS! Very nice intro as always. Looks to be a lazy day of beer drinking and watching football which is a standard Sunday for me during football season. Anyway! New beer. The new beer I'm enjoying comes courtesy of @SammyJaxxxx from the most recent NBS BIF. Been looking forward to trying this one for a few weeks now.

2014 bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours pitch black with a dark mocha colored head that is less than a finger high. No lacing and the head vanishes almost immediately leaving a small ring of foam around the glass.

Aromas of sweet bourbon, vanilla, maple, and a nutty hazelnut type of smell.

Taste is awesome! Enormous bourbon and vanilla up front. Roasted malt, chocolate, hazelnut. The maple definitely is there but is subdued probably due to the age.

Really smooth and creamy. Not overly viscous or thick. Extremely mellow from the 3+ years of age.

Overall this was an excellent offering! My second beer from Jackie O's, with the first also being a stout, and I think they hit it out of the park with both.

Radeberger Pilsner on tap, I've drank this beer before but only bottled. That was a long time ago and while I'm sure I enjoyed it I never sought it out. Saw this on tap and gave it shot. Glad I did. This beer is a light gold color with a thick white head. The aroma is bready malts as is the taste. The finish is hoppy dry and crisp the mouthfeel is light. In other words Radeberger on tap is what most drinkers want in a Pilsner. I think I'll try the bottles again if I can find some reasonably fresh

I saw Smuttynose Rocky Road on the tap list at the local store and decided to give it a shot while doing a little shopping.

Something is off here. It certainly looks the part, but there are hints of milk past it’s prime. There is an oily texture that’s not particularly pleasant. Not necessarily infected, but not good drinking.

Underneath, I believe there to be a decent stout, but this one is not for me. Hoping this was just a bad keg.

And now some Snakehandler to get the taste out of the Rocky Road out of my mouth.
