Breweries are still opening around the state, and a few might even be closing. (Yes, folks. It seems appropriate for this to be the year in which brewery closings are officailly added to this thread.)

Let's continue talking about all of them. With the hopes that in doing so we might learn something about both life and beer.

    Disgruntled.... please don't go.

    (if the rumors are true)

If the head brewer is gone, the person that probably developed or at least perfected all the beers we like, does it really matter?

Seems to be a forgone conclusion at this point. < < Sad Panda Face > >

So from the few posts people have made on these boards, what I can gather is that the head brewer is leaving, a decision made mutually (but behind the scenes may have been pushed out). It sounds like there could be some family issues here that may extend beyond making smart business decisions.

It kind of feels like the other owners recognize that without the head brewer, Disgruntled brewing would just be another small town brewery, and the struggle to keep a business like that open isn't worth it - so they are selling off inventory and closing shop. Apparently the interpersonal issues were strong enough that it caused the demise of the business?

I'm curious if anyone knows if the brewer has plans to open their own place, or join an existing brewery in the cities? It seems his skills are in high demand, and I'm sure someone would be more than willing to offer him a job - or if he could find investors, his style of beer could do very well in the cities (just look at Barrel Theory). I have no idea if he would consider moving to the cities, or what his situation is, or anything about him (I don't even know his name).

    from Yoerg's Facebook
THE YOERG SALOON UPDATE - 12.05.2017

This is supposed to be the week that the final permits are pulled for the saloon. The stairs are being slightly rearranged, a second bathroom has to be added on the main floor, and more than our fingers are crossed that we can get started on all of this next week. It's now looking like a middle of February 2018 opening, and we are trying to speed that up as fast as we can. We now have an accomplished architect involved whose worked with the City of Saint Paul for decades, and we hope to see smooth sailing ahead.

According to the owners, they are not selling their equipment, and are not closing. I got this off of Face Book. I've never heard of a brewery closing because they lost their brewer.

Rumor has it within 2 to 4 weeks Stacked Deck will be starting construction on their brewery in the Wild practice facility building. Look for an April opening.

Forgive if this pending brewery has appeared in the lists before. I did a search for it on the BA site and came up with bupkis. Walked into Lupulin for our first visit tonight. Their growler collection is quite robust. Couldn’t help but notice a logo I had never seen, from a brewery I’d never heard of, in a location that feels very ripe for a brewery, adding to the rising of the northern burbs breweries. These folks had just dropped in earlier in the evening to drop their growler here for display before they get open. Lupulin guys said the place hopes to open early in the new year. Brewery is called Aegir Brewing - Elk River.

Here’s their Book of Face link:

While we are on the subject, Lupulin also recently recieved two new bright and shinny tanks (I think 60bbl). They should be hooked up and operational soon.

I haven't. In fact, their First Call is the only beer I've ordered at a bar in the past two or three years that I didn't drink. I took two sips thought it was completely one dimensional, and that it didn't do that dimension well. Then the bartender brought me a free pour of Hopslam that they'd been taking photos of for social media, and I didn't touch the Modist beer again.

I had to check my trusty spreadsheet. Is Aegir a revival of the outfit which was once a homebrew supply / BOP? Probably not.

And there's a pilot system out that way -- three breweries in Elk River = holy cow!

I called Disgruntled's general contact phone number (from its website) and said to the gal answering my call that I was from Minneapolis and had a couple of questions to ask, to get responses to some brewery rumors now being passed around. She asked if I was a newspaper reporter. I said no, just a customer.

First I asked if she had any response to the story of Brett, the head brewer, no longer being part of Disgruntled. She responded by saying this was correct, that Brett no longer is with Disgruntled, but that she had no further details to disclose.

Second, I asked if this meant that Disgruntled would be closing down. She responded, and said "No, not at all". She volunteered no further details, but I take this to mean that there is the intention by current owners and staff to keep Disgruntled going as an operating brewery and tap room, plus filling the crowlers that make the way to select metro bottle shops.

The last stop I made at Disgruntled was the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, and I picked up crowlers of 'Nevermore'. I was not aware at that time that Brett was "out the door", and when I did hear the stories, I had hoped that this 'Nevermore' was not a veiled message as to what the future of Disgruntled might be.

I'd be happy to be wrong on this one, but don't rule out the possibility that staff are being kept in the dark or, let's say nicely, misleading. That's been known to happen to people who track brewery developments. It's also possible that my source was, again nicely, misled (or plans have changed, etc.).
