Me personally i have to say i do rather enjoy the citrus beer infusion myself.... althought i was shocked when i found Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin had a crazy bitter after taste bieng i love most of the brews they make... my favorites are Citradelic, Flying dog bloodline and Schofferhofer Grapefruit were all fantastic.....

I don't mind fruit in my IPA (or gose, lambic, stout etc). But sometimes I sense it is there to cover a flaw

Jack, I remember the cobalt blue bottles, they were really spruce forward. I could not enjoy that beer back then but would love to try it now as my taste is more accepting.I think my favorite spruce beer I have had so far was the Jackie O spruce beer.

I was out in the woods a few years back and someone pulled some spruce needles off a tree and we all ate them, I thought the taste would be good in a beer.

    Enjoy

Most people haven't moved on from miller light, doubt we are all ready to move past fruity IPAs. Stone fruits definitely can improve an IPA if done right btw.

What IPA is brewed with stone fruits? I can think of Citrus IPA , think I have seen coconut IPA as well as pineapple. I have seen SN peach and there are mango but have not seen plum cherry or others.

Just wondering the stone fruits you are thinking of and how they improve the IPA.

    Enjoy

Peaches and Mangos (apricot if I'm not mistaken) come to mind for me personally, and hints of those flavors are in a ton of different IPAs. I'd love to see some funky cherry or plum experimentation, think that could be an awesome ingredient. Stone fruits are great in sours, and I'm hoping with experimentation that'll spill over into IPAs as well.

Last spring (May) I brewed a Spruce Ale using fresh growth tips from my next door neighbors Blue Spruce Tree. That beer had a very unique flavor to it. For my palate it not a flavor I would associate with a pine tree. The best terminology was that it had an herbal flavor. I was not particularly a fan of this batch of beer but my wife and my friend Kevin loved this beer. Next spring I will co-brew a Spruce Ale with Kevin and split the batch.

    Cheers!

P.S. I discussed my beer in a New Beer Sunday thread: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-645.524138/#post-5525358

I really don't either. I just don't see the point. I like how "regular" IPAs taste.

This is such a subjective thing. "Can improve an IPA if done right btw" - I have never seen it done right. IMO every time I've had fruit in an IPA (stone fruit included), the beer has been ruined - such an awful trend. That said, I don't expect it to go away as the total spectrum of breweries are still doing this. From the sculpin variants to trendy (not meaning this in a bad way as I love them) breweries like the Veil, they seem to be selling well. But.. blegh

To each man their own I agree. But fruit has been used in making alcohol forever, and I doubt that'll ever change. Especially with the incredible success of Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin kinda paving the way.

I'm not sure why you said "but" as our posts both say the same thing, and even both cite sculpin fruited variants..

I remember trying Short's The Liberator when it first came out, I would guess that is one of the first modern American IPA to use fruit (Grapefruit) and I loved it. Have had some I loved since then, others I didn't.

We old timers hafta laugh when people complain about a style. I mean, is it more complicated than don't drink that style, get the one you like better?

I could see if there were too many (add style folks complain about) and other styles stopped being produced, but the truth is today every one of us has access to more styles done better than at any point in the history of the world

This past Summer, I began to get sick of Fruit infused IPAs, Sours, Shandys, etc. Now I am getting tired of stouts with chocolate, coffee, etc. All the sweetness and crappy flavors have turned me off to the point that I am starting to not event want to drink Barleywines and this year's BCBS event made me yawn. I find myself now, only wanting to drink clean lagers, pale ales and IPAs. I would even drink Bud over a lot of this garbage. The final nail in the coffin for me was Juicy Watermelon Watermelon Lime Ale by New Belgium Brewing. That was hideous, a 1 sip drainpour. The thing is; once you turn this corner you basically lose interest in new releases, limited releases, etc. I feel like I am just a beer drinker again, but go ahead with your pumpkin peach ale!
