Thanks Snowcrash. I have tried that before and faced problems. BUT, perhaps it might be that simply having cropped the original image before uploading into the editor was the source of the problem. I'll give it another now anyway to remind myself of the steps required to get towards the desired end-point.

I believe I might have uploaded a pic to that review I linked 2 posts up, and it appears to be awaiting moderation. I did not find it as straight-forward as it could be, but having got it to (probably) work I'll detail the steps.
    1) I used resizeyourimage.com / I've previously listed the specs of the original file.
    2) I had previously uploaded the photo from my mobile to my desktop.
    3) I uploaded the photo using the Browse button on the resizeyourimage.com page to select the photo located on my Desktop.
    4) This loaded with the bottle sideways, and with a 'crop' frame chopping off the top of the neck and base of the bottle.
    5) I rotated the bottle to vertical
    6) Now I see the top half of the bottle, the rest can be seen via the scroll-bar on the right.
    7) The dimensions (indicated at left) are H702-W395.
    8) I adjust (by drag and drop) the crop-frame so the top and base of the bottle are included; I do not at this stage adjust the width that incorporates excessive white background.
    9) The dimensions now are H842-W395, and I'm aiming for 300*150
    10) I'll start by trying to adjust the height to 300.
    11) This moves the edit frame so that it is now only covering the neck of the bottle. This seems counter-intuitive to me, and likely caused some previous confusion.
    12) I notice the Zoom buttons, which are not specifically mentioned in the explanatory steps for editing.
    13) I begin zooming out, and suddenly see that with each click the crop-frame automatically adjusts, going down including more and more of the lable.
    14) with a combination of clicking zoom-out, plus dragging the header and footer crop-frame I end up with the whole bottle height included, and the height as 300. The width is now 171.
    15) This seems simple as there is excess background at both sides. (Perhaps you should start adjusting according to the largest desired dimension such that your 2nd dimension should thus have 'excess' that can be happily cropped?)
    16) I adjust both left and right margins (drag+drop) to get the total width to 150, and the bottle centred in the middle of the image.
    17) I click the orange button above the image labled 'DO IT'.
    18) this gives me a small image of the bottle, correctly cropped, and the following information:
    'File size: 6.92 KB
    Width: 150
    Height: 300
    Image type: jpg
    Quality: 80%'
    19) Above the ^file info is now a large orange button labled: 'Save'. This brings up the 'save/options' box most of us are likely quite familiar with in other programmes/apps/downloads.
    20) I opt to save the edited image onto my desktop, giving it a clear name - the beer name rather than it's original timestamp derived name.
    21) On the BA website, on the beer page where I have just posted a review, above the missing image of the beer there is a drop-down menu labled 'Beer Tools'. There are two options: a) Suggest edit b) [This now reads 'photo is being approved, but IIRC originally it read 'Submit a photo'.]
    22) I selected the photo from my Desktop, and submitted it as directed (IDR precise steps now, but it was simple).
    23) The page notified me I'd successfully submitted the image, and that it was queued pending approval for display. [IDR precise wording of this notification]

Pending 24) I have previously managed to upload a photo at least once before, but given the process it's unsurprising to me that I've given up part way through. IDR if when BA publish the pic I get a notification of that fact... but we shall see in due course.

In conclusion, a couple of things confused me. 1) using the zoom buttons isn't mentioned in the resizeyourimage steps. It seems you have to use them, together with dragging the crop-frame borders to arrive at the desired end-point 2) the way the crop-frame moves around (step-11) as you begin zooming towards a desired dimension is also far from being expected/intuitive; at least to me!

Good step by step breakdown @JonnoWillsteed . I did mention to zoom in/out to accurately capture the label in my posts 7 and 9, but it was pretty well buried in this thread. The trickiest part of posting a photo for me is to make sure I snap the original photo far enough away from the label to give me room to crop out unnecessary features. I've taken photos close to the label, and ended up not being able to hit the 300x150 pixel requirement, instead it would be slightly short (~285 pixels) because I didn't give myself enough background/border area to zoom out to accurately capture the label.

Glad resizeyourimage works for you. That's the tool I use, as I find it insanely tricky to get the 300x150 pixel count in photo editing softwares (it's possible, but I'd prefer to work smarter, not harder).

I'll try and find one of those screen share video recorders and walk through my step by step process, but it sounds like you got it. I'll try and post up something so folks can see how it's done, and hopefully results in more photos being added to the site.

I have been adding loads of pics using the site that I linked. I would love for you or someone to try it out for ease of use comparisons.
    Prost!

I've found two beers that need photos, so I'm trying to generate a desktop video of my work flow. I'll try out your site for the other image!

Quick edit: I just pulled up that photo editor, and I'm not a big fan. I like being able to focus on the beer label with the resizer I use. I'll try and upload a video at some point today showing my workflow. The resizer you use is incredibly straight forward though. I just prefer the workflow of mine.

@Harrison8, I'm glad I appear to seem to have got it to work, so thx for your help. If I see my bottle pic published I will try to update this topic 'with evidence' of success.
It's possible I'd overlooked your Zoom in/out tip. By the time I came back to the topic there were 10-15 new posts, and it's simple to overlook specific tips within the traffic.
Interesting you adjust vs the end result you want. But I suppose I do too, I prefer the whole container, rather than just the lable. Sometimes say if it's a 'non-standard' container it's nice to be able to visualise that too. There are times I'd like to post pix of the container, a close-up of the front lable, and ditto re: any reverse lable - but one step at a time eh?
I've previously been 'short' on a dimension as you describe, but forget if that's more common on large-ratio (H versus W) images or vice versa.
If you manage to post a how-to vid then I look forward to seeing it. Having a step by step how-to post pics, available to a wider audience could be of benefit to the BA board as a whole....

Just for your reference, @JonnoWillsteed, Beer Advocate does not notify you when your image gets approved and posted. I would just keep tabs on the photo you uploaded to see when it gets posted.

My workflow video is rendering now. There is, unfortunately, no audio or annotations, but I walked through each step slowly and used a click animation to show when I made left clicks. Hope it helps. I also emphasized the site requirements for photos for new users.

Here my workflow video. @JonnoWillsteed @Bitterbill Perhaps I should have spent more time on it to generate annotations to state whether on left/right clicking, and/or dragging the mouse. Regardless, I think it'll at least be a fair example of my workflow and may help someone upload a photo.

The video starts after the photo has been taken. I do open up the photo in Lightroom and add a little sharpness to really make the label pop, and then export to JPEG and optimize for the web. That's not totally necessary for uploading a photo. Just a step I enjoy adding to sharpen my skills.

    Cheers.

I'm arriving a bit late to this convo, but with a combined > 850 approved place & beer pics under my belt, I will tell you that I use resizeyourimage.com religiously. Yeah, it can be tricky at times, but once you get the hang of "Zoom In/Zoom Out", yer GTG.

Nothing in bottle or CAN that enters Chez Woody gets drank & reviewed until an approved pic is in place!

I should also use this opportunity to give kudos to the picture approval team. The process used to be as slow as molasses going uphill on a cold day, which was a bar in & of itself to submissions. Now, things happen lickety-split!

While many of the photo-less beers are draft only and significant number are not. I have reviewed over 3,000 beers and have a photo for each one. If I had an easy way to find out which ones did not have photos, I would gladly supply them.

Indeed! I can still remember that it could take DAYS for a picture to be approved last year, while it's now more of a matter of minutes, maybe up to an hour sometimes.

While it seems quite easy to use and rather useful if you want to resize multiple images, what really bothers me about it is that it just resizes the entire picture without giving you the opportunity to crop to a specific window as you can with resizeyourimage.

I do my cropping on my mobile first. Right after I take the pic since I am already in the camera's program.

See previous post. It did work, with resizeyourimage & the original photo . & also with the Google(ized? ) copy , re-sized in Windows. I don't know why it didn't work before.I just don't have the beer photos anymore , to try to upload to BA.

I had 2 new-to-me beers Sunday, with no photos. I did manage to get the photos uploaded to BA.......however ...resizeyourimage & picresize didn't work. (Some of the photos below)
Couldn't get resizeyourimage to go to 150 x 300. All uploaded smaller, and wouldn't get large enough, even an original, unedited, 6000x3114(10.7Mb) photo. Picresize couldn't get the file size small enough. I started with "FINE" resolution, then remembered & went to "Basic" , which cut the file size by ~2/3.
Ended up going the route of :
    File>Google>File>Windows Paint>resize to150x300>file>upload to BA
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/32700/320675/ (19.8KB)

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24047/325594/ (18.0KB)

All of these photos behaved as listed above. 118 x 276 was as large as I could get on resizeyourimage
    Original photo (10.7Mb)

Cropped & edited (4.5Mb)( different original from above[10.2Mb])

    Returned from Google (134KB)

    Edited & cropped('cause original was tilted 2deg ), with Jpeg"Basic" resolution (1.29Mb)

    Returned from Google (80.4KB)

    Original, with Jpeg "Basic" (3.24Mb)

Resized to 150x300, without going through Google (25.2KB) Photo posted to BA was 18.0KB

Just struggled with my first pic. The key was to keep my mobile phone with the long sides horisontal ("landscape") when taking the pic, not with the short sides of the phone horisontal ("portrait"). Apparently when using resizeyourimage, then later rotating the pic before uploading to BA isn't possible.
