The idea that a beer isn't really a type of beer if it doesn't actually resemble that type is totally lost on people. The way people (including brewers) view things right now is that a beer needs to simply have one shared process or ingredient for it to be of that type. Beers that resemble NEIPAs are sold as Kolsch. Reactions include: "I normally don't like Kolsch, but this opaque Galaxy one is great!" Yeah, I probably look a bit foolish and it's more complicated than that. (My whiny post also reflects my trip to the beer store today.) I know you 'get it' and are just making a point... I'm doing the same too.

Probably too local and obscure to merit any pursuit, but Half & Half from Barrier and Sugarmaker from Grimm are my faves; after that, its the far more accessible Xocoveza from Stone...

Nods to Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Sam Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout, too...

Do you consider Young's Double Chocolate or Sam's Organic Chocolate versions of a milk stout?

Garage Brewing Company makes some really stellar milk stouts. The Marshmallow Milk Stout is fantastic. Had the chocolate-cherry milk stout the other night which was also good.
I know it was limited, but Stone made a Neapolitan Stout, which literally tasted like a Neapolitan. I thought it was great in terms of sweetness as well. Too bad there isn't any more...
Forgot to add Omnipollo's NOA Pecan Stout. That thing is really sweet, but also very tasty.

I am partial to the OG Left Hand Milk Stout.

I know Milk Stout Nitro is now Left Hand’s #1 beer, at least I figure it is, but I find the flavor of Milk Stout non-Nitro superior.
I find the Nitro version more muted.

    • Locally I would pick S'More Stout from 16 mile Brewery in Georgetown, Delaware
    • Overall I would pick Neapolitan Milk Stout from Saugatuck Brewing in Michigan - you can taste the 3 flavors of ice cream in it.
    • I had a Milk Stout from a Japanese brewery that I'm thinking something got lost in translation with what defines a milk stout. My friends and I liked it but we just shook our heads questioning if it was anything close to a milk stout
    • For fun if I find Southern Tier's Creme Brule Stout on tap - we order vanilla ice cream and make Creme Brule Milk Floats.
Also - I've made this recipe that uses milk stout instead of milk (used Lancaster Brewing's Double Double Chocolate Milk Stout)

    https://www.craftbeer.com/recipes/chocolate-chip-cookies-with-bacon-beer-and-cayenne

And yes along with the beer there is cayenne and bacon in the recipe. I also happen to make mine gluten free (although if I am correct the beer has gluten - oh well!)

Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Xocoveza for sure. Locally, SingleSpeed's Tip the Cow is a favorite (although it is classified here as an American Stout). Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat and Brau Brothers Moo Joos are also solid choices.

I had a friend who brought home the barrel aged (I think it was bourbon). Didn't get a chance to try it but he said it was amazing!

Sam Adams Merry Maker Gingerbread Stout, is similar, incredible, but limited availability. Now only available during the winter and only on tap. But incredible if you can find it.

    Regional: Left Hand's Milk Stout
    Local distro'd: Tallgrass's Buffalo Sweat / 4 Hand's Chocolate Milk Stout / Rockbridge Brewing's Option 2
    Local non-distro'd: BKS's Holstein

Buffalo Sweat and Holstein can both be had in variants, but you can't go wrong with any of their editions, including plain. Holstein is one of the most substantial milk stouts I've ever had.
