    Happy NBS to all

It's been a bit of a week, first I got my wisdom teeth out, and now I just finished a stretch at work. I was precepting a new nurse, and that should translate to an easier go of it, especially considering she's already got great instincts and a good sense of things, but it's almost trickier that way where you have to be more conscientiously vigilant to help because it's easy to become unengaged. That probably doesn't make a huge amount of sense.
Anyway, to start today I've got Stoup's Coastal Confusion, an IPA that Stoup brewed I think partly for Chuck's (a local hop shop), and partly to celebrate Seattle Beer Week.

    (leftover fridge cleanout tacos ftw)

The pour is on the pale side between amber and peach and doesn't let much imagery through the liquid. Decent finger or so of fluffy white head settles in to little more than a soft cap, though it leaves wonderful lacing along the glass.

Nose is sweet citrus, with soft peach and mango.

Flavour definitely gives away the aspirations here, and are executed within that plan really really well. Softly sweet, the mango and papaya the compose the front end are overripe, but not mushy/bruised yet, and the transition is to an almost strawberry/banana smoothie type thing. Not the estery/yeasty banana of belgians, but like you know those expensive ass smoothie juices from odwalla or naked or whatever? Like that. This is one of the first times that I've had one of these conspicuously non-IPA IPAs, and not only noticed it, but not been turned off by that aspect. I'd still prefer the balance and full breadth of flavours of a classic IPA, but this is really well put together and enjoyable.

I'm still debating if I'm actually going to go to bed now, or if I'll just take my hammock over to the lake and try and nap on and off for most of the day. I figure realistically, I'm not going to be doing anything functional tonight anyway (other than revisiting this wonderful forum several hours from now for another installment), so I'm leaning towards the hammock option.
Hope all y'all are enjoying your day and have something tasty in your glass as well!!

    Cheers.

    Double nickel belian ale
    ..pours a dark amber
..around medium body with abive average carbonation which seemed a little too strong
..Aroma is yeast, sugar, malt, grain,Clove and other spices.
..taste is similar but with a much stronger bitter taste than the aroma suggests.
..overall it was very enjoyable, a little unbalanced but still would be easy to have more than one in an evening[IMG]

It'd be a crime if I didn't peek in with my one newbie on this fine Sunday, wouldn't it @lordofthewiens?

    :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::laughing::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Anybody? Nobody? *tap* *tap* Is this mic even on?!?

Here's the new beer courtesy of Brazos Valley Brewing from Brenham, TX:
6.6% ABV, 6.2 SRM, 55 IBUs printed on side of can

A need for some good American hops hit me hard this week, and woo-wee did BVB Co. deliver! Grapefruit, pine, all sorts of very light yet very present dank notes flow throughout both the nose and the flavor of this beer. The thin layer of biscuit malt is tasty and sweet but never so much that it distracts. This American IPA is true to its genre, which is what I wanted ... call me a happy beer drinker right now. :grinning:

Too much going on to get to it all, but in the afterglow of one rocking night at the Grand Stafford, Leavenworth, Wiretree and Joey McGee still ringing in the ears, cook day is in full steam with the corn and greens out of the way, so now with the chicken we get to play:

Some much lower-ABV tried-and-trues are on deck over here, for I got 15 pounds of chicken that needs cooking for tomorrow's Memorial Day fun in Taiton, TX, so I'll step back, let you guys and gals have the big stage, while I sweat off about 10 pounds cooking in between checking out your work.

Be safe on the roads this weekend!

    Cheers!

Hello everyone! Let's remember our fallen brave soldiers and protectors of this GREAT Land. I offer you this review that i did with little sleep in the last 24 due to travel , so it c could be sketchy ( wish I had that excuse for all my reviews)

Greenwich Dungras ipa compliments of @Laketime

Upon pouring, I find the color to be a nice clear orange, and the initial fluffy white head does reduce to a nice ring. I get some tropical fruity tones of oranges and apricot. Nice upfront bitterness (67 ibu's) it's balance edges towards bitter. Some of it lingering. Probably Midwest hops. Maybe cascade and Chinook. Not going to be one of my better experiences but it is alright. 3.75,3.5,3.25,3.25,3.5

    Cheers

    Barrier - Lomax

This beer is labeled a “summer” IPA. At 5.8% ABV, this beer sits north of the typical American “session” IPAs, and a smidge north of SNPA, but still a bit below a typical IPA. I think it’s a nice space to occupy. I know next to nothing about surfing, but I’m a music nerd, so when I see “Lomax” I only think of Alan Lomax (and his dad John). Perhaps the Barrier beer is named after surfer Alfred Lomax.

This is a delicious beer. The ABV level brings a certain balance to it that most IPAs lack. It’s a little hazy (old-school haze). It’s gold. The beer is made with Simcoe, Centennial, and Mosaic. There’s a little pineapple, but the beer is not overly sweet by any means. There’s also some angularity due to some herbal bitterness. I had a little bit of particulate in my glass.

New beer #2. @thebeers , I believe you enjoyed this more than I did. My least favorite of the 5 I picked up the other week from Other Half.

All Royal Everything - Other Half feat. Mikkeller
    IIPA - 10% abv
    Canned 5/1/18 (26 days ago)
Purchased for $22/4 at Other Half
    Score: 3.96 (-9.8% rDev)

L - 3-finger yellowish head atop an opaque orange body.

S - sweet candy, citrus, fresh herb, alcohol.

T - dank-forward. Balanced somewhat by grapefruit and some caramel malt sweetness. Dirty middle, with some very earthy hops. Moderate bitterness, low sweetness, moderate booziness.

F - thick, syrupy body (for an ipa at least) with below-average carb.

O - rather one-dimemsionally dank, without enough balance from other hops and supporting malt.

Happy NBS from South Beach, WI. It's already 90° and it's not even noon!

Good thing I have my fridge loaded with beer that is great for hot weather. The past two weeks I have been busy renovating a small, old rusty boat trailer into a kayak hauler. It's finally finished, now we are just waiting for the kayaks we ordered.

Today I am enjoying Apricot Fellowship from American Solera. It pours a cloudy apricot color with a 1 finger disappearing white head. Aroma is a sweet and tart with a good dose of lemon zest, apricot and minimal funk. Yeast is wild and earthy with hints of barrel. Fruity apricot with lemon zest, tartness and some subtle sweetness. Not as much yeast funk as the nose, but nice oak and fruit. Finish has tart bite and slightly mineral quality. Medium body, dry mouthfeel with some tannin and must. Very enjoyable if you are looking for something to make you pucker.

NBS! I'm joining you today while on vacation on Senja Island, Norway. Due to Norway's alcohol laws everything over 4.7% is sold through state stores and there aren't any on the island, so I brought this over from Tromso. Not a new country for me but a new brewery and I added the beer to the site. Definitely the right style for a cloudy, windy day north of the Arctic Circle!

    Kinn Bryggeri Invalidstaut
    [IMG]

375mL bottle into a pint glass
A: Dark brown, almost black with a fizzy cola-like head
S: Cola, cocoa, cherry, slightly muted
T: Cocoa, burnt malt, bitterness from both the burn and light hops; short bitter finish
M: A touch sweet, quite bitter, hides the 9% but also a touch thin
O: This tastes more like a regular stout to me than the sweet stout the brewery describes. Overall decent but not great - straight 3.75s

Cheers and have a great Memorial Day tomorrow - I'll be thinking of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for home even while away.

New Beer Sunday: A New IPA

Afternoon NBSers with an alert for those who like a good solid no-nonsense classical IPA.

This afternoon’s new beer is the Flying Dog Alpha Initiative #02.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/68/337378/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are full of citrus, resin, pine, the bready malt backbone and a light touch of grassiness. The malt sweetness controls but not conceals the bitterness. Worth a try. It’s a good, solid IPA that is better than many but doesn’t really stand out much from the pack. I’d say it’s worth a try if you find it but not exceptional enough to demand a repeat or displace any of the IPAs in my current rotation.

Once again, in anticipation of tomorrow,

(Stands) (Raises glass) "To absent friends." (Sips)

    Cheers, all!

Good afternoon NBS and thank you @lordofthewiens for the start today, Should be wary of crime writer blog posting partner? As I read about the trip and hobby gone full time, I was reminded of the old TV show Alfred Hicthcock Presents! To all you Veterans and families of Veterans, Thank you,
This past month our #1 son was in Vietnam vacationing, he shared his itinerary with us and my parents, as we discussed where he was, my mother asked my father if he had been in those areas during his nearly 6 years in that war? He responded " no, we tried but the other guys wouldn't let us in", there was a gentle feel to a delicate and difficult memory.
Today's offering is from Transient, my first time with any of their beers, I will seek out more, the construct of this beer is right up there, exceptional feel, wonderful grain base, perfect
(and I don't say this often) hop /Brett balance. So glad to have found this in our favorite bottle shop here in WMass

    Wayward (100% Brett)

Poured from an undated bottle into the test glass This is the Citra- Mosaic version
A - Honey colored backdrop, carbonation unleashed twist aggressively top side, towering cap of white froth rises above the glass line, then recedes onto itself.
S - Tangerines, spring orchard blossoms, musty hay stacks, add a bit of melon rime, biscuit with honey drizzle and that Brett snap
T - Start in the tropics, with fresh pineapple, some mango and warm melon, then warm sourdough toast with apricot marmalade, followed by that bit of Brett funk adding a touch of fermented flavor
M - Delicate on the palate, almost fluffy, the carbonation rocks through without being a prick about it, Semi sweet start with all that tropical fruit , then a quick shift to the ever so slightly tart side. The linger is forever and quite well balanced.
O - A real treat, this offering displays the talented brewers deft use of Brett, a beautiful pale ale, perfectly hopped.
The malt base , hop schedule and choice of Citra - Mosaic all combine to a beautiful offering

That was my feeling exactly. Kind of like Foreign Objects’ Green Galaxy, but better executed by OH.

Wow Larry, you didn’t pick up any dankness at all? That’s all I could taste. I trust your palate more than mine though.

It came off more piney/resin than dank for me, but I will say the finish was big and overshadowed the fruitiness when I took a quick sip of it.

Happy New CANned Evil Twin Sunday (Week 692)!

I awoke to an Alert that @utopiajane had mentioned me in a post & I was curious. Yes, I am on my own personal CANQuest (tm), but anyone & everyone are free & encouraged to join me! We are now so far over the hump of the learning curve that I am unsure that one even still exists. I drank a Big Ass Money Stout (3) last night at a monstrous 17.2% ABV & this one will CANtinue my Evil Twin string for the day:

    Howdy NBSers
I always remember Memorial weekend Sunday as the day me and my Dad did yard work and made sure we finished in time to see them drop the flag on the race.
I lift this glass to my Dad and all the other Dads, brothers, sons, daughters, and all that gave so much for us.

This is an American Porter called Cathasis from Tree House
    Appearance is very dark brown
Aroma is roasted malt and carmel
Mouthfeel is full and robust but smooth and low carbonation
Taste is pretty fudgey and strong cocoa notes with a nice burnt carmel finish
Over all it’s a full bodied porter that to me borders on a stout. At 7.4 AVB and smooth mouth feel the beer lends it self to a cold lazy day. I got a nice roasted aroma as I lifted the glass to go with the medium sweet chocolate taste. It fit the bill perfectly today as it’s 50 degrees out today chilly for late May around here.
@lordofthewiens I would love to know the address of Mrs Wiens podcast, my wife has been a huge fan of all things true crime for years. She is always researching local crimes. It started years ago when her neighbor allegedly murdered his parents and buried a business partner in his cellar 2 houses down from hers, James Blaikie, it a pretty infamous story around here. There were suspicious deaths surrounding his parents and he got nailed for his business partners, a local socialite’s husbands, disappearance.
That was just one of quite a few bizarre crimes in our area.
Today She found a crime link about a local musician we just saw last night. I always tell her she should write a book or 2 so we can retire on her royalties.
    Safe and healthy weekend all.

Happy Sunday NBS players and a somber memorial weekend. A dreary and rainy day here on the island with a good 20 degree drop in temps too. In the dog house again with the fiancé so I’m taking my beer consumption to the road again. Hitting up Hoptron Brewtique, a really nice craft beer bar.

My first new beer today is 2X4, iipa, from Melvin brewing. Also my first ever brew from Melvin. The beer checks in at 10% abv.

A golden/amber pour with nice clarity. I get hops and fruit on the nose. Tangy but mellow hops upfront with a rather smooth flow and slightly bitter finish. Mostly citrus fruit notes with melon, grapefruit, lemon, and orange. Decent malt backing adds some sugar sweetness. the Abv hides dangerously and it really goes down fast.

Overall, pretty decent drinking stuff. It doesn’t really wow me but I would have no problem drinking it again. Perhaps it’s ba score is a tat over-rated. I’m really right around a 4 here players.

HUBAR DIPA from Mill House Brewing Co. A new brewery to me as well. Pours a hazy golden color with a well retained half inch white head that settles to a ring and leaves excellent lacing. Smells predominately of citrus fruits with a hint of tropical fruits and pepper. Tastes of grapefruit, lemon, pepper, floral notes, grapefruit pith and an earthy quality that I cannot identify. Medium bodied and carbonated, very dry and puckering mouth feel. Not a bad beer by any means but glad I just picked up a single.
