Your Worst Hangover From Craft Beer...and What Caused It

I got to thinking today about some of my worst hangovers from craft beer after reminiscing about my trip to Oktoberfest in another thread. And while we should always respect beer, sometimes we don't. Especially when we first get into craft and don't realize what a punch that "one" barrel-aged imperial stout can deliver.

My worst...at least the first one that comes to mind...was after Oktoberfest in Munich. I was somewhat hungover to start the day from my first day/night in Munich, but in order to get a seat in the tents (without a reservation) you need to get there early. So we snagged a seat in the Paulaner tent around 9:30 am and started drinking at 10 am.

7 liters of Paulaner Oktoberfestbier later, I decided it was probably time to go home around 4 or 5ish in the afternoon (I forget, obviously). I took a Pedicab back to the train station in downtown Munich, grabbed some Burger King...and well I didn't get on the train just yet.

Munich is a melting pot of cultures during Oktoberfest, so I ended up meeting an Englishman and we kept drinking at one of the hotels there. We tried to imitate each other's accents (I'm from Boston), and he sloppily kept saying, "The Depahhted" (the movie "The Departed" had just come out I think) and I replied (incorrectly), "Put another shrimp on the barbie!".

From there I continued to drink with some Australians (they also party hard) at the hotel bar. And finally I went "brothel-hopping", not to do anything bad (I'm serious), but just to check them out and hang out with prostitutes and drink champagne with them.

Eventually I took a cab back to the wrong hotel (I gave the cab driver the address from the hotel card I had, but it was their sister hotel on the other side of the city...apparently there were two sides to the card), and then took ANOTHER cab back to my actual hotel.

I woke up in the morning running to the bathroom ripping my contacts out of my blood shot eyes and throwing up in the toilet. I spent the entire day in bed during a beautiful day in Munich, but eventually made it back out with my friends for dinner and more good times.

    Prost!

Personally it has never involved craft beer - at the risk of being repetitive; I drink two or three and feel no hangover the following morning.

Back when I was younger and more careless (possibly stupid too) then yes, I have bad memories of Strong euro lager in great quantity.

That said, crappy wines or whiskey were by far the worst.

When I first got into craft I had an entire six pack of Sweetwater Hop Hash Double IPA in one setting. I knew I was starting to really like pales and IPA's, but I didn't fully comprehend that a double IPA meant higher ABV, I thought it just meant it tasted more hoppy. I put away an entire sixer of Sweetwater 420 in one setting without feeling like death the next day, so I figured I could do the same with this beer. I was wrong.

I have never had a craft beer hangover.
Tequila, however, is an evil drink.

I remember drinking a six pack of Victory at Sea within an evening that led to a particularly awful hangover, I think the sweetness combined with alcohol is what makes that one memorable. There are lots of nights I drank a mixed sixer of various high ABV imperial stouts and DIPA's that left me feeling gross. Lots of beer and not enough water tends to have that effect

Can I answer this next weekend after I attend the Pips member party and the inevitable bottle share afterwards with little to no consumption of water?

I had a pretty gnarly hangover last weekend, but I got looped into doing a shot somewhere in the middle of the day. I'm gonna blame that. I also was up earlier than I would have liked.

Made the mistake of starting a 64 oz. growler of Kuhnhenn Vintage Ale solo, and instead of putting it away after a glass or two I finished it. Big mistake.

If I drink too many IPAs/DIPAs I can count on a pretty awful next day...and these days it isn't really that many, 2-4 can do me in. But two incidents come to mind quickly: a Christmas party where I had a crazy mix of beers and some bad foods [for me] and once on a date where I had a mix of beers that would turn anyone's stomach...we were having fun and kept drinking and I wasn't paying much attention and just looking at the list and saying, "Ah yeah this sounds good, I will have this next."

I don't remember the details, but I did learn that no matter how hot is it and how good it tastes, putting myself on the other side of a full sixer of Brown Sugga is not a wise move.

All of my worst craft hangovers seem to revolve around DirtWolf.

Craft beer pong is a bad idea. What were worse ideas were playing 1v1 and not paying attention while my opponent shot. He sunk two in a row in the same cup, so I had to chug the entire collection all at once. It was a mixture of IPA's (one was a triple), and I was hammered at 4:30pm on a Thursday. Next morning for work was hell.

    2 come to mind.

3 cans of Lupulin Hooey is a really bad move for me. I think the insane amount of hops really make me sick, and, boy, was I the next morning. Work was hell that day.

Another was a BBQ at a friend's place. After a ton of BBQ, and a ton of beer, including a shit on of BA beers, I was extremely sick the next morning. I was puking, outside, during a torrential rain storm because of it.

Haven't had a hangover since freshman year in college, craft beer or otherwise. The 1-2 hangovers I had then from too many Euro and Canadian pale lagers (and many games of quarters) in a night were enough for a lifetime.

The question "what caused it" rather answers itself. In my experience you can get whacked off most any style brew if you really try hard enough.

When Victory first released Hop Ranch, I had it at the source on draft. I liked it so much that I purchased a case of it when it came out in bottles. I remember trying to drink two 4-packs during the NFL playoffs; I believe I ended up consuming seven beers that night. Needless to say, at 9% ABV, I felt like I got ran over by a truck the next morning. That lasted until I had some more Hop Ranch later that day. I won't even drink that beer now, but let me tell you, I was in love with it for a very short period. It was LARRRGE.

A Deal With the Devil 750s sat on the shelf in Anchorage for the better part of a year. $25. I believe this had something to do with it.
