Since the beers aren't going to drink themselves, and I don't have to work for a few more hours, I decided to pop open a lighter one - then a work issue came up. I did get a few sips in, and put it back in the fridge. I'll try to get it before I actually have to go to work .

I did get a review in on what I was able to drink .

    3.99/5 rDev -5%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Pours a lighter, murky golden color. The head is 3 finger, white, quite frothy. There's some lacing on the glass, and the retention is great.
The nose is quite strong with citrus. Pineapple, grapefruit.
Taste - Citrus is decent. Pineapple, seems to be the main, with grapefruit mixed in as well.
The body is lighter. The hops do linger, but not extremely long.
Decent beer, and a pleasure to drink.

I got some VIP tix for the IPA Fest. I'd be more than happy to bring a ton of bottles to share the night before if any of you jokers attend!

Chicago would be a great choice logistically, but are there other big beer fests in Chicago already?
I would like that location. Same reasons Boston are great. Awesome fest plus so many other great things to do while there.

As an example, my favorite style is Tripel, and my very favorite beer of all time is Chimay White. I gave it a 4.8. Now, La Fin du Monde got a 5. I think it's a better beer, even though Chimay is my personal favorite.

As far as the ratings thing goes I'm somewhere in the middle, but lean much closer to @beertunes end of the scale (legitimately I think there's a regional element to it as well as this topic has come up before in the NW forums and more opinions tended to skew that way).
For me if I'm rating, a '3' is neutral, average, whatever. If there's an element I DON'T enjoy that puts it below a 3. 3.5 is enjoyable but pretty standard... like forgetable but pleasant. 4 is my baseline for 'I actively enjoy this,' 4.5 is incredible and I don't encounter a perfect five very often, just on principle.
Now that's just for how I rate. When I am reading the ratings on this site I mentally adjust for the grade inflation that Terry talks about. For other people's ratings I assume a 4 is 'pretty good' and anything in the 3.5 range is probably subpar. Hell at this point, if I see something in the 4.2 range I assume that half the raters thought it was just ok. That's why going by pure numbers is a fools errand by and large, and why I hate ratings without a review.

So to me, a 5.0 means that I can't conceive of any way that particular attribute can be better - not necessarily that it's my favorite, just that it is without flaw.

Rating each attribute individually, I've still, to date, only given out one perfect score. That beer isn't my favorite, beer - not even in its own style! - but I honestly cannot conceive of any way to improve it in any facet. It's perfectly made.

I apply the same line of thinking above, with the caveat that I'm not re-visiting many beers I rate under a 3.5. However, just because *I* may not want to revisit it doesn't mean it can't be an average beer, or even slightly better.

It may look good, or smell OK, or maybe has a nice feel. That said, if something is just, "Ehh, OK," are you really going to pay $2-4 per beer on it, when you can pay the same and easily find something you enjoy more? That's not necessarily the same thing as a beer not being good.

I also agree with Corey that people are looking at it as a 0-5 scale, when it's a 1-5 scale. 3 does not equal 60% (it's actually 50%). But the thing is: the percentage doesn't matter! Are you really saying a 4.0 beer looks 75% good (or 80% for the math-challenged)? What the hell does "75% good" mean? Does it mean you were hoping for 2 fingers of head and 2 minutes of retention, but actually only got 1 1/2 fingers of head and 1.5 minutes of retention?

......please tell me no one is actually doing that. :stuck_out_tongue:

This isn't actually a percentage scale; the numbers are markers along a path, where 3 literally means "average."

If you do decide this needs to somehow be a percentage scale, then yes, rating a "good" beer as automatically a 4.0 or above does make a certain amount of sense. I would argue it doesn't meet the intent of the system, and it overall devalues ratings overall when there is too much inflation.

Just me, though. Not criticizing, just offering a different point of view.

“3 does not equal 60%” is as easy as it can be summarized. I don’t view it as a percentage, but like you said, if I did, 3 would be 50% to me too. Like I said, it doesn’t give us the option of going below 1. So that’s middle. Doesn’t mean I am right by any means, but I thought that’s how the site explained it early on too. Although they had that 0-100 thing included to make it more convoluted.

If we were to apply a %, would we use a 90,80,70,60 scale, or like it was when I was in high school; 94,83,73...
