That was 'Homecoming'. I hear the brewpubs are getting overflow today. I was there yesterday and was hoping it would be on tap at Alberta but they were waiting for another keg to finish.

While I don't ever edit the email newsletters I receive from Great Notion (other than to take out the swag ads and the social greetings), I confess I almost did this time. Maybe it's just a personal pet peeve of mine, but if you gushingly describe special pricing for the lucky first 100 people in line, perhaps you should consider actually including the price tag, so everyone can see just how "special" that pricing is (and maybe decide for themselves whether it's special enough to run on down to the brewery on Saturday extra early, just so they're one of the lucky first 100).

Was in the area last Saturday and decided to stop by and pick up a 4pack of boo berry to give to my cousin in Vancouver, bc. Holy F. First time to see a beer shit show. Also the first time to see handtrucks at a brewery.

Well, are you talking about customers bringing hand trucks?

Was it just a couple folks, or more widespread? I was under the impression that the early mania had subsided.

Check John's post above, limited crowlers of adjunct stouts will bring the crowds, I have some friends that go to most of the releases on Saturdays and even they skipped this one knowing it'd probably be crazy.

I'll be very curious to hear what others think of the strawberry taffy and double fudge brownie. I tired the taffy and coconut version of both beers at the pub yesterday, and wasn't hugely impressed by either. Neither beer is in the same league with double stack, I would argue.

I'm sure I'm wrong about this, but if I didn't know better, I'd wonder if GN wasn't using crowlers of DS to unload the crowlers of taffy and fudge brownie they have on hand. Just speaking for myself, I wouldn't be interested in a crowler of either beer on its own.

I don't believe so. If I recall correctly, I think they mentioned that it will likely be released in November? Don't quote me on that, but I think there was some mention of this in one of their previous newsletters, or a prior post in this thread.

The last info I heard was in this thread around the end of August:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/great-notion.378684/page-38#post-6157182

Among other things, the post says "Stay tuned for more info in about 3-4 more weeks," which would've been around the end of September. Maybe the beer isn't ready yet.

I agree with John on the Strawberry Taffy and both of the Fudge Brownies. Both were lacking compared to everything else. I visited GN a couple weeks ago for the first time and loved the Double Stack, Boo Berry, Baby Blue and especially the Fruit by the Foot. That was my first time trying any of them and they lived up to the hype.

Completely agree about fudge brownie. Did not like that beer 1 bit. I thought strawberry taffy was okay but definitely not close to double stack. I would have stuck around to buy a crowler of DS but super not interested in the 3 pack of crowlers.

It was my first visit to portland and I visited Great Notion, Breakside, Upright, Hair of the Dog, Cascade, and Modern Times. I would put my Great Notion visit in the bottom 3 of that list easily. The beer all seems over sweet and gimmicky with DS being the only one to pull it off well enough for me to want more than a 2 oz taster. Seems like a beer place for non beer people. (which is fine but like im surprised GN is held in such high regard on BA)

I know this has become a pretty long thread now, but if you skim through it, you'll see there is some disagreement regarding the quality of GN beers. There are a couple of folks who seem to think they're making world class beers, and are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I think the majority of PDX locals find their beers to be hit and miss, but that they generally are making above average NE style, adjunct laden IPA's (as well as sours, stouts, and so on). At least that's the impression I've gotten from reading over this thread.

Personally, I probably visit GN once every 2 or 3 months. Some things they make I tend to like better than others (as you would expect), though sometimes the level of sweetness and "fruitiness" of the beers wears on me. At least to my palate, some of the stouts seem a bit off as well, with something of a medicinal flavor at times (that I didn't care for). On the other hand, some of the pale ales and IPA/DIPA's I've really enjoyed, and I do think DS is an excellent stout (especially considering that it sees no barrel aging).

I assume GN has gotten something of a national reputation (in a positive way), as every time I go, it seems like most of the crowd are from out of town, and have just stopped on by to see what all the fuss is about, or to pick up some cans/crowlers. That being said, I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean when you say it seems to be a "beer place for non-beer people." My impression is that even die hard "west coast IPA" aficionados find some of the beers made by GN to be pretty good, and God knows a lot of their stuff seems to be in very high demand on the beer trading forums.

FWIW, I'd put them in the bottom 3 of that list too. (Which is still a good ranking in a very good list.) I wouldn't put them in my Top 5 favorite Portland breweries, but they'd make my Top 10 pretty easily.

Would they be in my Top 10 Oregon breweries?

    (Thinks about it.)

Nope. Probably the Top 15 though. Probably.

That's because they tend to get the most attention for styles I don't particularly care for. Hazy IPAs. Candy/pastry/dessert beers embellished with adjuncts. Big fruity beers. Stuff that is very popular at the moment. To that end, I'd change your last comment a bit to suggest that Great Notion is "a beer place for new beer people."

That's not an insult to Great Notion, to new beer, or to new beer people, btw. I've had some great beers from Great Notion, and I'd be happy to drink them again. And it's great that they're establishing themselves as a brewery that experiments and takes chances. I'm glad such breweries exist, even if they aren't my first choice for day-to-day beers.

Heck, I'd still like to try Great Notion's lager, just to see what their take is like. And it would make me very happy if their lager is a good one. (Assuming, of course, that it's easy to find.)

I agree that they make some seriously good IPAs. Over-Ripe was very very good when I had it. And Double Stack is great. The majority of their tap list on my visit just felt gimmicky/ too sweet. glad to hear that locals pretty much agree ish with my take on the place

They make a lot of sweet beers; which hardly anyone else in the PNW is doing, it's why they are popular and why they are divisive. I personally hope they keep it up.
