Nice meeting you Steve, I was the one who met you at the beginning. @SpinSamzo and @RobNewton stopped in later. Glad I got to meet you, and see you at a brewery soon!

I saw that... that's just stupid.

Go to CVS buy a sheet of oak tag for 99¢, peel a 5th Anniversary sticker off the can, then take the savings and buy 16 cans. You'll be happier.

Better to be surrounded by the trifecta of Sam, Matt and Andrew’s?

I think it’s a stretch to say HF (or anywhere really, but especially so with them) is overrated. People obviously have different tastes and that’s cool. I love beers from HF and OH. Feel very lucky to live so close to the latter. But to @MakersNeat ’s point, HF has an insane focus on quality and integrity. Nobody would make a case for HF being either a one trick pony or being trend-focused or making beers that cater to people that perhaps don’t like the taste of beer. All stuff which gets leveled at OH from time to time. They’re two very different breweries. If you want top notch constantly-tweaked lacto/ddh IPAs or pastry stouts with chocolate, bananas, candy bar etc - OH is hard to beat. If you want a super wide range of incredibly well-crafted beers that all firmly stay on the right side of the “actual beer” line - HF

I think people overrate them as somehow being untouchable when besides Saisons I think there is another brewery that does a given style better than they do. What makes them impressive is that they do everything well which is very hard to do and is why they're rightfully considered pretty much the best.

Sorry to point out the extremely obvious, but: Hill Farmstead and Other Half are attempting to brew distinctly different beers (yes, even if they both have "Nelson" in the name). I personally prefer OH IPAs, but HF is by far the better brewery imo. Comparing them as if they have the same goal in mind is futile though.

Alright enough about HF, let’s get back to your regularly scheduled program of lactose does not belong in IPA.

I'd like to point out when someone mentions not the brewery but by the owner/brewery is potential one of the most annoying thinks I can think of. Seeing a "shaun" reference made me throw my lactose infused oatmeal out the window. That being said, tose it up.

Someone smarter than myself should take one of those old revolutionary snake don't tread on me flags and make a gif that reads "Don't Tose On Me"

Just get rid of the snake and replace it with a can of Hop Showers.

Your comparison is way off, but the analogy is a fun one to try! If I'm modifying your analogy, OH is more like Dominique Ansel bakery than a good line cook. Their offerings might look a bit more narrow, but it's still well crafted and you get experimental crazes like the cronut.

More accurate though, Hill farm is a BBQ spot and OH is your local take out.

BBQ takes a long time to do right. Read the description on their fbook page for Rhetorica, "So, in October of 2018, Shaun brewed our first single-decocted dark lager and conditioned it at 3º Celsius—as we have with Poetica and Memoria—in one of our French oak puncheons for more than 3 months. The beer was then moved to stainless steel and krausened with fresh-fermenting lager to provide slow, gentle, natural carbonation." Kudos to all the people with the space and time to commit to doing things like conditioning lagers for over 3 months and smoking bbq for hours.

OH on the other hand has orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and general tso's chicken that all taste kind of the same, are sweet and fruity, but deliver exactly what they're supposed to. They don't take as long to crank out, they're what the people want, and they keep the lights on.

Yeah I liked the idea too. But agreed the first example too wide. Even yours doesn’t do either justice though, esp OH. My analogy would be:

    Shaun Hill = Dan Barber
Sam & Co = David Chang

HA! This pretty good I'll admit. Keeping with your line of thinking, 'tose = MSG.

OH has finally entered NJ. My local craft beer bar in Hoboken, Cork City (which btw now has 51 taps and is about as diversified as it gets) had two OH beers on tap last night. Unfortunately, one of them was a tose’d beer.

I saw that as well but I wouldn’t get too excited just yet. I’ve seen Cork City randomly acquire kegs from out of state breweries that don’t distribute to NJ (Fat Heads, Brew Kettle, Columbus Brewing). I feel like this might have been a one time thing for their cellar raid event that took place on Wednesday. I do hope I’m wrong though.
