I tried to look, but I didn't try to push the plastic up close to see if I could see through it.*

*Just looked at the discarded packaging and see that there's a clear spot that could probably be used to view the bottom of the cans -- I'll have to keep that in mind for the future. As said, since it was the cans I knew it had to be fairly fresh.

A little late to the game here, but I wanted to point people to this circa 1900 chart of German and Austrian beers, which also shows standard serving size, serving vessel, and how much alcohol and the attenuation. I just downloaded a copy ($4 from Etsy). It is a goldmine of information and looks super cool to boot:

What the heck is #10 (let alone #15)? Berliner Weiß?

Ha yeah looks like a bowl or a large dish.

I love random glassware but I’ll pass on those two.

Ha nah, I’ve seen that one too. Another one I could never buy. So ugly, and looks pointless.

Wasn't that long ago (well, late 90s-early '00s) that I was served a Berliner Kindl Weisse in the US in this glass - approx - 3.5" tall, 4" diameter:

And when the bar ran out of the beer, they gave me one of the glasses - that's how I know the dimensions.

Do you have any idea how they started using a glass like that? Its so ... unique? Also, 3.5 x 4? Thats much smaller that I thought.

Not exactly "regional" to Northern Illinois or Southern Wisconsin.

According to Jackson it's called a Molle, but he has no history other than to say the Berliner is served in that or an oversized champagne "saucer" (basically a schooner).

When I brought it home, my dog looked at it and thought,
"Hey, cool. That's for me, right? I'm tired of drinking out of stainless steel."

Once found a circa late 1950s German book of photographs at a flea market in one of those "$1 each or 5 for $3" boxes and thought, "Hey, I bet there's some cool beer-drinking or brewery photos in this..." and threw it on my pile to make it five books. The only such photo in the book was this one - so it has become one of my favorites  (since it cost me 60¢!):

B&W photo so hard to tell which flavored syrup - but it's dark so I figure the raspberry?

In Jackson's Beer Companion the woodruff looks darkest. He even comments that the raspberry looks more peach colored than red.

I tried the woodruff once -- reminded me of Crest toothpaste. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Oh, yeah, I was trying to remember where that pic was.

Lately the German photos I see the woodruff version looks scarily bright green neon. IIRC, it's artificially flavored - and both have added coloring? (Pretty sure the US bans real woodruff and/or only allow it's use in alcoholic beverages, so you can't import the syrup?)

Looking through Google Images, though, it's obvious one can't make a judgement of which syrup it is based on the darkness in a B&W photo since every "mix" is different.

I thought it was made from herbs that were exclusive to the Berlin area? I can't recall if I had mine in Germany, or from contraband smuggled back from the old country -- was a long time ago.
