    Once I got a wide angle lens (nothing fish-eye crazy) for my 35, that's about all I carried. Mine wasn't at all heavy -- and it was all I had at the time, so...
    Smart Phones have gotten so much better, and the storage is what will be most appreciated. Just double-check your out-of-country service.

    Just my $.02 ... on a trip to "the Alps" in 1 day I would recommend day trip to Starnberger See and Garmisch Partenkirchen and taken the gondola to the top of the Zugspitze. Head back to Munich towards Bad Tölz and Tegernsee. There's so much to see in this area, lots of possible stops, for me almost crazy to think to do it all in 1 day.

    Absolutely. Replaced the secondary point and shoot cameras I used to buy and use when I didn't have my SLR with me. No need anymore!

    Storage wise, put an external 64GB SD card in my phone, on top of the other 20 some GB left internal. So should be covered!

    Yes, out of country service all setup. Good to go!

    Personally I’d do the quicker and cheaper option of taking the cable car up Mount Wank in Garmisch. A fraction of the cost, saves a huge amount of time and the views from the top provided that it’s a day that is clear of course, are no less stunning than those up the Zugspitze. Nothing beats cracking open an Augustiner Dunkel while kicking back admiring the stunning views! Oh and there’s also the cattle.

    I’d also say there’s potential for a wee trip into Nuremberg while doing Bamberg. Loads of beer places to visit within a fairly concentrated area. If you do don’t miss Cafe Wanderer.

    My wife and I returned home today after two weeks in Bavaria. The weather was pretty crap our first week. But that didn't stop us from having a great time. Even did Zugspitze despite not being able to see anything. I wish we had more time for Halstatt/Cochem/Rothenburg odt. Also wish I had made more room for beer to bring home. I only brought back a six pack of Rothaus Pils. Driving was a breeze and much less chaotic than it is in North Carolina. I'm going to miss the liters of fresh Helles and real bretzel. I think the best one we had was at the Chinese Tower.

    Glad to hear your trip was great, aside from the weather! I keep watching the weather like a hawk, haha. Thankfully, looks like by the time we arrive, it will be in the 70's/80's around Cologne and sunny. Hope the rain keeps away, we have had enough rain here in Cleveland, day after day, so I have my fill of it already!

    Glad to hear driving isn't any problem. I have no issues at all driving in big cities here (Atlanta, LA, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, etc...), so I'm not too worried about Germany. Sounds like they drive a lot better there too, I hear people actually use blinkers! :wink: But yeah, I'm excited to drive all around Bavaria and the countryside and such.

    Can't wait to eat/drink my body weight in Helles and some fresh pretzel/bretzel!

    @Dodger75

    Thanks for that info! That sounds like a nicer/better option for us if we do that. I have it noted!

    We flew out of Charlotte so we had to drive back. I was on I-85 for less than five minutes before I wanted to be driving in Germany again. Everything just made sense how they drive. It's pure chaos in North Carolina.

    After the HELL that is driving in Brussels, driving in Germany was like a vacation. Even the older areas with no grid system still mostly made sense. Merging seems very orderly and doesn't involve the constant dead stops we have here. Having large trucks relegated to the far right was also nice. I generally like the take the trains and relax (+ no worry about DUIs or parking), but driving gives you a lot more flexibility.

    We drove from Brussels to Dusseldorf (and the surrounding areas), and it was a breeze.

    Just be aware the driving in the cities can be challenging. Parking can suck in Urban centers, or it is expensive. Or both.

    The Autobahn is a breeze, I miss it.

    I'm so glad we got full coverage on our car. We had no issue in parking decks until we got to Heidelberg and the ramp was so narrow that the bumper hit the wall.

    @Domingo

    Mainly we are driving from city-to-city, or to our amusement park destinations on the first half of the trip. Once we arrive in each city, we have parking at each hotel so we will drop the car off and then just train around or other methods of transportation. In Bamberg our hotel offered valet, so we even did that so we didn't have to worry about finding parking around the hotel.

    As a counterpoint to the praise of driving in Germany -- watch out for traffic jams on the Autobahn. It seems that transport truck drivers would sooner blare their horns and slam on their brakes at the last minute rather than slow down early and accept that the road is blocked. Seemed like they really expected everyone to move out of their way. I thought I was dead a couple different times.

    For those familiar, our last full day in Germany we check out and depart Bamberg on Friday morning/afternoon and head to Frankfurt to our hotel that night at the airport for our morning flight back home. Are there any stops along the way that should be a must that day? Brewery or otherwise? Or should we plan to just stick around in Bamberg half the day or something in the area there?

    Via google maps, we basically cut though Wurzburg as far as larger cities go.

    That's super convenient. With my stay in Dusseldorf, the hotel offered parking, but it was an additional 12 Euros per day. That felt a little steep, although it was about 1/2 what we were paying in Belgium. They also started each new day at 9AM as well. Luckily we were jet lagged and up early. They only had a tiny lot, so I don't necessarily blame them.

    Yeah, most of the hotels run 15-20 Euro per day if I recall.. I think a few hotels we got free, outside of the main hubs of course. But we just figure it's the price for dealing with the car there and wanting good locations within the city so we can just walk or train out from the hotel. Next time, once we get used to the trains and whatever, we could likely just skip the car and just rent per-day we need it or whatever if heading further out and if for some reason trains won't make it. But it will be a learning curve for next time!

    That's how I view any new vacation I take. They first go-round is a learning curve and when I return I'll know what to do and what not to do. Every now and then I'll nail it on the first go, so maybe you'll get lucky.

    Seems easy enough to reach and they serve Maisacher biers, which I've never had. Is it worth the trip?

    I have found out a day we are in Munich is a German Holiday on Monday, June 10th...

    Whit Monday

    Are breweries and restaurants still open? It appears shops and such will be closed, but curious if we are going to lose a day in Munich because of this Holiday or if things are still open?

    I see there are a lot of suggestions- Wiesbaden is about 20 minutes out of Frankfurt and is a really interesting town. There are cool bars and great shopping-

    As a general rule, gastronomic places should be open on national holidays, although some smaller places are generally closed on Mondays.
