His review was one of the tip offs that it was infected. I did read you review and wish that was the beer I had in front of me, but at east it is still drinkable.

    16 oz. can.
    Canned 05/09/19.
    4.5% abv.
Moderate pour yields a one inch white head over a magenta-golden body with some sticky lacing, although head dissipates fairly quickly. Nose of slight funk, spice, and slight tart citrus. Taste mirrors nose very nicely with a bit of cranberry or currant tartness. Very interesting! Fairly crisp finish inviting you for another sip. Nice feel and overall, a real nice saison and would highly recommend.
    Cheers!!

Happy Even More New Odds & Sods Beer Sunday (Week 747)!

I am late to the party since I was in KofP/Gulph Mills for the weekend for a monthly bottle share that a friend puts on the third Saturday of every month. Phew! It was another rip-roaring affair & I pulled out Stone's Vertical Epic 03.03.03 through 11.11.11 for the occasion. The more recent ones were the better ones, speaking to the "fresher is better" adage.

I have been drinking at home a LOT more of late. I just have such a backlog that I want to clear it out without spending time & money at a bar. It has been working out since I have a plethora of oddball beers to drink.

I begin today (what is left of it) with one that I really wanted to have a couple of weeks ago for the beginning of Pride Month, but I either did not buy the first time that I saw it, or it went missing in the interim. 8=( Well, that has been CANrected & here it is:

Ascension Vegan Orange Dreamsicle variant. This was awesome. Opaquely hazy. Nice fluffy head retention/spotty lacing. Aromas and flavors of big juicy/sour/tart/tangy tangerines, orange juice, citrus peel/zest, vanilla, cream, lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; light peppercorn, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, citrus peel/zest bitterness, and light spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; balanced creamy/grainy wheat, lactic acid, fruit tang, and citrus peel/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness; no pucker/astringency. Very smooth, not overly lactic, zero warming 5%. Awesome balance of juicy/vibrant tangerines and Lacto complexity; with great vanilla presence and pale/wheat malts against acidity. Mild residual sweetness with lingering acidic/tangy dryness. Another great variant, but not as impressive as the others I had so far. 4.1

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @cjgiant for getting us underway this Fathers Day Weekend.

I'm not lifting a beer to my Dad, for the simple reason that he's not a beer guy. Wine, G&Ts and (to a far lesser degree) scotch are more his speed. So maybe I'll do a G&T tonight around the time I call him to wish him the best this day.

I skipped last week's NBS, despite hitting
a Bare Hands Ka Kow I received courtesy of good offices of @ovaltine, due to the fact I drank it around 3am Sunday morning at a friend's and woke up around six hours later on that friend's couch, along with a woman I barely know and an Australian Shepherd in between us.The hangover I awoke with precluded any participation in NBS, or indeed damn near any consumption of alcohol or food, or really any human interaction for the remainder of that day.

Fortunately, today is a very different day. Late afternoon here, it's 86° and partly cloudy, and I've hit two beers for NBS.

First, I hit a Polish Baltic Porter that I rather enjoyed:

Later, I hit this one, again from @ovaltine:

Just look at that glass. Is it pink, lemonade, grapefruit juice, or a beer?
Turns out plums and cardamom go really well together, especially when aged in oak barrels.

Not sure if I'll be back with another or not. If not, see you next week!

New Beer Sunday: Flanders Red Ale

Evenin’ NBSers with a heads up for fans of Rodenbach beers.

This evening’s new beer, with the second pour being saved for tomorrow, is the Rodenbach 2016 Vintage Oak Aged Ale (Barrel No. 222) in a 750 ml bottle.

My review, subject to revision when I finish off Pour 2 tomorrow night, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/216/391198/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are both intense and refreshing. There’s some almost vinegary green apple and cherry tartness that are backed up by some caramel sweetness and dark fruit. In the background there’s a bit of oak, some light chocolate and some vanilla. I’m enjoying this beer and find it refreshingly drinkable. It’s good that it comes in a 750 ml bottle so it’s possible to have at least two pours to understand what the beer has to offer. Well worth trying.

On the player tonight I’ve got a few old vinyl records from a friend's collection and one of them included a song that every father might want to listen to once in a while:

    Cheers, all!

That hunk of meat in the background looks awfully tasty. I'd love to get that recipe from you ... I've heard of lots of smoking/oven combinations for BBQ-ing meat but haven't heard of going from the pit to the slow cooker, though it makes loads of sense in theory.

Hope it and the gumbo came out well, buddy!

Cheers to all you dads and the rest of the NBS gang!

Thanks to @cjgiant for getting the show started today! My new beer today is 10 from Bruton Brewery in Italy. This is actually listed as an Italian barleywine on the bottle, so incorrectly identified on the BA listing (I will request the change). I had never seen this before stumbling across it at a liquor store in British Columbia. Poured from fridge temp. Not a sound when the cap is cracked. Zero carbonation, which could be a good thing (e.g. old Thomas Hardy's Ale) or not so good. The nose is really nice - raisins are pretty dominant. Cherries, oak, nuts, bread, and candy follow. The taste is really nice. Candy sweetness upfront - maybe a touch of maple in there. Raisins and nuts (almonds mostly) are strong. Some earthy and leather notes come through as well. Mild spice and tree sap are present on the aftertaste. The lack of carbonation really works for this beer - brings out the malts and fruit flavors nicely. Mouthfeel is quite viscous - really hangs around on the palate. Overall, I am a big fan of this beer, and I'm curious how it might age. This was best before date is in 2017, but I bet it could go another 5 years. I might try to grab another bottle.

Interestingly, my rating is much higher than the average for this beer (rDev +15.7%), so I guess I don't agree with most, although I guess it could be due to the age of the bottle. I actually just bought this and didn't even look at the BBD.

New Brewery for me. Got as a gift from a beer bro that hasn't been on here for 4 years, but I keep in touch on untappd. NEDIPA. This was fantastic. Opaquely hazy green color. Great rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, blueberry, citrus peel/zest, and light peppercorn/pine hops; with moderate wheat, biscuit dough, light honeyed malt sweetness; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Mild pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, bready malts; light sticky hops, and slight lingering resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering dryness; no cloying/astringency. Super smooth/soft, minimal warming 7.7%. Amazing Mosaic, Amarillo profile. Extremely juicy, and lightly dank/earthy hops; with a perfectly balanced wheat/oat/malt backbone. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. Spot on stuff. 4.25

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Finally home after another long day at work.

To start off with @cjgiant 's opening:

I often drink at home, and, sadly, alone. I do however, from time to time, make it out to Old Chicago, which is only a bit more than a mile away from where I live. I also make it out to Pantown Brewing which is also a bit more than a mile from where I live. Both places are great to go, and I get good beers at both.

It's also Father's Day today. I lost my dad a bit over 2 years ago, and miss calling him on this day. I'm sadly not a father, because I couldn't find any ladies stupid enough to become one with. It is one of my greatest regrets. I really wish I could have gotten my dad closer to his goal of 5 grandkids.

Oh, well, it's time for beer.

Another from the Fulton Brewing Coffee 4 pack - Finka Coffee Stout. It clocks in at 8.6%

I do like milk stouts. Whenever I go to one of my favorite breweries in Hudson, WI - Oliphant Brewing - and they have their Milk Man Man Baby - I have to get some to bring home. This beer here has the hallmarks of a milk stout. It has a nice sweetness up front, but then it changes over to coffee. The combination of flavors really work out, and I'm liking it - maybe too much, because I'm downing it quite fast.

    Review:

    3.96/5 rDev -2.2%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Pours pitch black. 2 finger brown head that has good retention, minimal lacing on the glass.
The nose has some coffee on it, as expected. There's also a slight roast aroma.
Taste - it tastes a bit sweet up front, like a normal milk stout would. It then kicks into the coffee fast. There's also a bit of bitterness on the backside, that lingers.
Good body. Some pop from the carbonation. There's a slight bitterness that lingers in my throat.
A great combination of a milk stout and coffee.

I'll have at least one more tonight. See you when I do.

Or it could be partially due to a recipe change (and confusion about the beer). There are reviews of that beer that claim that it's 7.5% ABV and that the bottle states "abbey ale" as opposed to your 10% "barley wine."

Well, the time has come as the GF is giving me dirty looks for watching the end of the US Open, but I’m going to try Founders Más Agave and compare to @ovaltine’s review
    [IMG]

Definitely a bit dark for a Gise, but the barrel can have that affect. Head is passive, but persistent and reforms with ease. With the moderate lacing, the body is the only thing that’s a tad off here, by my assessment.

Lime and barrel - heavy on the former with an accent of the latter I agree with. I get a bit of syrupy sweetness that could be the agave more than I do salt, but there’s a light salinity there.

I get a honey-like sweetness initially that needs with lime to produce a familiar margarita mix impression. There’s even a little bit of candied orange to mimic the orange liqueur from a margarita. Tequila barrel notes come next, mellow enough - perhaps due to the fact the beer malt is finally being recognized. Salt rushes in while the tequila note stretched to the end.

A soft, comforting beer, made even softer by a flatness to it. It’s not devoid of carbonation, but the tequila is left to add what little bite there is to the feel. Luckily, this beer doesn’t force the spirit’s alcohol component on the drinker, I agree.

I’d suggest your typical restaurant’s margarita is going to be a little more tart than this beer. Some mixes can lean sweet, but I like that most tend to have a sour bite to counter any sweetness. I will say that this beer does a better job of mimicking a margarita than my earlier offering (the tequila is the most key component). I’ll also say this is a little too sweet overall - especially for a sour base beer. In the end, despite their differences, I’m not sure which I’d grab if given a choice between them - I think situation would dictate.

    Cheers, all!

Man, I wish I had an actual smoker. I'm really just making do with the propane grill for the time being, but as you can imagine, the hard part is maintaining a low enough temperature. So that's why the meat eventually made its way indoors .

Both the gumbo and veal were fantastic in their own ways- a great way to spend the day, for sure. And I had my older son by my side as sous chef for the whole time, which was a treat in and of itself. Here's the final results before they were scarfed down:

Yet another first review. 2019 vintage. Cork & Cap. This was fantastic. Great fluffy head retention, spotty soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big juicy/tart/tangy red grapes, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red wine, toasted oak, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bready malts; lighter notes of oaken vanilla, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, wine tang, and light yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/grainy wheat, lactic acid, fruit tang, and light oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness; no puckering. Refreshingly smooth, not overly lactic, zero warming 6%. Fantastic balance of juicy/jammy Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and Brett/bacteria complexity; with great oak presence, and pale/wheat malts against acidity. Mild residual sweetness with lingering crisp acidic/tangy dryness. Another spot on spontaneous sour as expected. Hope they send more to MI, I have 1 other one. Definitely softer and way less vinegary than Stargate. 4.25

Hello again NBSers. Decided to treat myself tonight thanks to the lack of spice going on. Never did address @cjgiant 's initial question: when it comes to where I like to enjoy my beers, the answer is simply, "Yes". This week, I got to meet up with @bstyle , which sparked me to enjoy a beer from a mutually admired brewery (along with the likes of @joe1510 , @Beersnake1 who I met up with at this place, and probably a few others I'm forgetting. Sorry...). Less talk, more rock.

    Hair of the Dog
    Maja
    - Vanilla Maple Bourbon Barleywine

As with most from the pound, Maja isn't all that pretty. Only a proud owner will love the muddled orange rust coloring. The lazy bubbles supporting a thin but silky smooth foam above isn't all too impressive, but it sure is a beautiful sight nonetheless to me.

No question about it, there's Bourbon and there's vanilla. The pop of the cap made that apparent to anyone standing within ten feet. Sticking my nose in just like a dog familiarizing itself with a perfect stranger, I'm met with rich toffee and caramel. Perhaps that advertised maple is in the mix, but that's what I'm getting dammit. With some breathing, licorice pops with toasted marshmallows. In one simple word, this smells "glorious".

The first sip, long after the pour mind you, brings a tear to my eye. Again, the marshmallow aspect, drenched in sweet Bourbon and charred over a roaring fire of damp oak. Peach cobbler with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Right next door to heaven.

Despite all these sweet sounding elements, it's quite balanced. Well rounded with that but of oak and char. The booze flares the nostrils at the end of each wonderful sip. Sweet and woody, sappy and sticky, rich and decadent.

As with most from Hair of the Dog, Maja is not for the faint of heart, but an absolute stunner for the adventurous spirit. Though it sounds aligned with the pastry beers of new, I'd suggest this is a bridge in the gap of old fashioned English Barleywines and new school adjunct monsters. Thanks again Alan and Co., along with Omnipollo this go around, for another wonderful experience.

After my official review, I gave Maja a rating of 4.52 with an rDev of+10.8% (as usual for me with these guys...)

    Cheers.

The final beer from the coffee 4 pack from Fulton Brewing:
Cold Press Porter - 6.4% ABV.

I'm very happy with this beer. It's got a creamy feel to it. Nice caramel, and some vanilla. Really impressed.

    Review:

    3.87/5 rDev +4.3%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Pours pitch black. Heavy carbonation, and there was a 2 finger head, but the head dissipated quickly. No lacing on the glass.
The nose is, well, like the others from this pack - coffee. That's really all I get in the aroma.
Taste - I'm interested in this. The coffee starts out, then it switches to a caramel, vanilla flavor.
Quite smooth feeling. Decent bodied. Some carbonation. Some creaminess.
I am quite happy with this beer. It's got a lot of good things going on with it that make it just work right.

I might try for one more new beer tonight. I'm all done with the Fulton, but I do have one more lower ABV beer I could do. I'll see after I finish this, and it's going down slower than the last one.
