Thanks for much for posting. This was a very common beer in my grandfather's house in the 1970s, I am going to seek it out and have a pour in his memory based on your post!

I never had a chance to pick up these cans, but loved the pour when I had it at Revolution Brewery, my favorite brewery! The reason for the switch was some barrels began to leak and they switched to a different barrel set to complete the aging process.

I so look forward to the third in this series, also one of the most memorable poems of my High School English class.

    Quebecois!!!

#2, if you look up “a fall evening in a bottle of beer,” there’s a picture of this magnificent beer.

A sparkly clear copper color under a tan head, this beer is an aromatic sensory sensation, with the creamy vanilla aromas trying to fend off the allspice and cinnamon aromas.

    Fail.

But that’s okay, because the creamy vanilla flavors are the perfect complement to the cinnamon and allspice flavors - and they allow the apple juice to sneak in just as the curtain is closing.

This is a magnificent fall beer - it exceeded my expectations, which were pretty high. Need to pick up another 4-pack to enjoy as fall progresses to winter.

Abomination Wandering Into The Fog - Mosaic. Fantastic NEDIPA. First Review. Nice fluffy head retention/spotty lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, biscuit dough, light toasted malt; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body. Balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness; no hop astringency. Very smooth, nicely soft, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 8.6%. Fantastic Mosaic showcase. Extremely juicy, vibrant, dank, and earthy hops; with a nice sized wheat/oat/malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Loved the hop profile as expected. 4.2

Hey there and happy New Big Boy Beer Sunday.

Thanks to @lordofthewiens for the kickoff. Not a golfer, but appreciate the dedication it takes to achieve a goal and milestone. I wasn't much of an athlete as a kid. Lots of time in the band room, and that has been a constant even to today. I was a ten handicap bowler at one time when I bowled on my Dad's ten pin team, was a good volleyball and softball player in my late 20s. Music is where I still strive for perfection - been close once or twice, but still seeking that magic moment.

So, what is in the glass? Springdale Barrel Room Grain Reaper that has been in the house for a while. It is a 12.7% American Barleywine according to BA.

    Yeah, its obvious...more cowbell..

It is a pretty gnarly pour...cloudy reddish brown with very little head. The smell is awesome. A very distinct apple of the candied variety, brown sugar, bourbon and boozy, hint of vanilla, and the usual round up of dark fruits. The flavor more or less follows along, maybe not in that order. First sip and I went immediately to apple, but after that there is more to it once it builds up a bit. Oak, bourbon, figs, dates. It is a little heavy on the sweetness especially on multiple sips. It isn't sticky, but it is close. It does have an odd bitterness on the finish, but it isn't obtrusive and seems insufficient to clean up the sweetness and hit the taste bud reset. Medium body at best, mildly carbonated, pleasantly warming.

I like it and am enjoying it well enough. I would call it very good, not great, and it will land around 3.8 or so unless something changes as I sip my way thru this beer.

    A Marzen/Festbier that is a Festbier.
Upland Brewery's Oktoberfest. And more food ****.
If I have another beer it will be one of the ones already shown so cheers and good night all.

A gentle pour from a 12-oz. can yields a finger of soapy and noisey off-white foam with long retention and small spots of lace. Clear copper-straw color with orange-amber highlights.

Toasted bread with wheat and bitter herbal hops greet the nose, faint citrus in the back.

The taste begins neutral on sweetness with medium-low bitterness, wheat and lager malt are balanced with faint caramel. No surprises here, it has a basic taste profile. The finish is quick and clean, it does not dry yet bitterness rises as peppery spice appears. Bitterness from hops and toasted wheat linger briefly.

Just below medium body with average carbonation, alcohol is cleverly hidden as spice.
Claims to be a "Bavarian style Lager", true to Festbier style and a strong case for separating Marzen and Festbier into two different styles.

New Beer Sunday: Belgian Quadrupel (Quad)

Evenin’ NBSers with a report for Quad fans.

This evenings new beer is a Bourbon barrel-aged Quad brewed by The Lost Abbey and is called Ex Cathedra.

As with most sipping beers my review is still subject to revision until the beer is finished and can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18149/280082/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are complex with dark brown sugar and toasted malt, some dark stone fruit, orange, ginger, light bourbon, a bit of oak, spices and a bit of licorice. This is definitely an enjoyable and sippable beer that has a very complex aroma/flavor profile that is also influenced both by temperature and prior sips in that sometimes a sip seems to give one set of flavors and then a somewhat different one on another sip. Definitely a beer worth trying if you can find it and I’d definitely pick up another bottle for further aging.

The music on the player tonight is focused on Country music. The recent Ken Burns Documentary reminded me of some things I’d forgotten from the time when I was growing up and introduced me to some stuff I’d never known before about the history of American Music, such as where certain songs originated and how they persisted over time.

    12 oz. can.
    No canning date.
Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch white head over a bright copper body with lacing. Nose of slightly toasted malt, slight caramel, and slight spice. Taste mirrors nose with the slight sweetness of caramel throughout to a semi-dry finish with a bit of hop bitterness. Nice feel and overall, a solid Marzen/Oktoberfest from St. Albans, VT.
    Cheers!!!

This has caught my attention, looks like a Marzen.
Interesting that it's labeled as "Bavarian Ale".
Mill River makes a few Lagers, mostly Ales.
    I'm up for one.

Happy Sunday NBS players. A decent day after all the god damn rain here on the island. Fall, really seems to have taken over rather quickly. A busy day moving over to my new place for the time being. Still trying to figure shit out with the fiancé or ex-fiancé, depending on how you want to look at it, but I got a pretty sweet pad on the water for the time being. Unbelievable first victory for the Jets and while I'm not gonna get ahead of myself it was a nice relief after their awful start.

My new beer today is Black Toes ipa, described as a black NE ipa w/ flaked oats and lactose, from Spider Bite brewing. The brew checks in at 6.5% abv and has no canning date but decently fresh since it was just recently released.

A dark but rather off-brown/black color on the pour with a good head of off-white bubbles and nice lacing. Nose, is a mix of hops and chocolate malt. That mix carries right over onto the first few sips. A rush of bitter hops upfront with smooth malts along the flow and the finish is nicely bitter. There is some decent tropical fruit tones with orange and lime here as well as a good coffee flavor throughout the drinking. A light/moderate mouth feel that is very drinkable. I just love the back and forth mix of flavors. Additional notes of caramel, vanilla, and burnt toast.

Overall, this is pretty nice. I'm not so sure about the black ne ipa claim but its a pretty good black ipa/hoppy dark ale. I miss this style. Gonna score it in the 4 range and I might grab a few more cans,

Hubbard's Cave Blueberry & Banana Pot De Crème. This was fantastic. Solid head retention, minimal spotty lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, mushy bananas, blueberry, fruit skin, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, vanilla, cream, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark bread; with lighter notes of licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, leather, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very mild herbal, grassy, roasted bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, bready malts; slight slickness, sticky hops, chalky roast, and fruit tang/acid in the mouthfeel. Slightly increasing lingering bitter/tart dryness; no cloying sweetness. Dangerously smooth/soft sipping, mild increasing warmth of 12% after the finish. Perfectly balanced super rich dark/roasted malts, chocolate, jammy fruit, and lactose/vanilla flavors; with mild earthy hops and fruity yeast. Not overly sweet/heavy with lingering dryness. Another easy winner as expected. Not overwhelming on any aspect. 4.25

    Hello Almost Late Night NBS!!!
So grateful for the weekend. If for nothing else, I catch up on shit around the house. Especially considering the Santa Ana winds that blew. And when you have a pool..... You get to clean up everything that blows in from the desert. But pool work is kinda zen for me. Sometimes I enjoy skimming and brushing while listening to the birds, while other times its catching one of the many shows I love on NPR. And sometimes it's music. Today I commenced with NPR, and then straight to one helluva playlist... Dave Alvin, the Boss, Los Lobos, Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Tom Russel, and a few others. I got into a zone. I wish I had more time for that. I also fixed the lock on the front door, got the wind chimes back up, did some spider clearing (we have lots), some weeding, cleaned the air conditioner filter, taught my daughter how to read the privacy agreement to an app she WAS interested in , and of course worked on stuff for school. My back hurts, but all in all a pretty good day.

And now to the best part of the day...BEER.
And a style that rarely catches my interest.
Cantrip Kölsch by Bottle Logic Brewing
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/33824/411037/

Beautiful gold-tinged straw hued elixir, like the light of the sun on a field of wheat. Fluffy white head puffs up north of an 2 inches, and slowly recedes to a thin cap that hangs for the whole ride. Great retention, ever so slight lacing. Tiny golden orbs continuously rise from the depths to replenish the head.
Smell is spot on, if not a tad assertive for style. Spice note akin to a Pils. Hints at white peppercorn, but retreats to slightly grassy (in a fresh way) and a nuanced lemon blossom.
Taste pushes a slightly fruity, crackery sweetness that dries out with a slow mellowing bitterness. At times I feel that a lithe buckwheat note is trying to peek in, but I can't quite nail it.
Feel, light and crisp. I don't know how they did it, but it seems like they played with the water chemistry to give it a very nice feel that I have had from places that have a higher mineral content in their water.
Overall, I now have a local example of a SOLID example of a style that I rarely get excited for, but now would seek out on a regular basis.

    Oxbow - Surf Casting

I’m staying with Maine beers for the night, but shifting to Oxbow for a few. This is a case of “does what it says on the tin.” It’s a beer with salt and lime and it tastes like a beer with salt and lime. Beyond that, there’s a nice yogurt like acidity.
