This guy is white and the article is from 2012, but something tells me there's a reasonable overlap if you Venn diagramed "people who've played an RPG" and craft beer enthusiasts, and this article gets at exactly what you're saying and, well, at least attempting to explain what it is you're not quite wrapping your mind around (Apologies if you hate video games or are not actually a white male...but I think it's still a reasonable article, and it's literally as milquetoast in it's critiques as can be.)

Yeah, the authority in these conversations is sometimes striking.

Robin DiAngelo does an incredible job at the start of, "What Does It Mean to Be White? Developing White Racial Literacy," by comparing the existence of racism to the classification of Pluto as a planet, actually available via google books preview!

As I expected, this important and timely thread brought out the absurd and false "us white people have it so hard, we should be treated equally" comments. Absolute nonsense.
Thank you Todd for this thread and your statement starting it, you said it way better and more concise than I could have :beers:.

I get it. When America was new my great great+ grandfather was summoned from Germany (Regensburg area) by Alexander Hamilton and George Washington to continue his farm machinery development in America, with the goal of cotton reaping machines helping to supplant slave labor. But through time the Baron and family became slaveholders in South Carolina and Alabama. The Civil War ruined the family's wealth, killed many sons, and the rest is a very sad history. They owned people not that long ago and now we are dealing with the full force of that truth and realization. Check out the memorial on The Rotunda at UVA to the Poellnitz boys, who were trained as doctors at the Harvard of the South in the early 1800s. They were Confederate doctors. There is no good way to know how conscience could abide this economic system.

    Good, calming move from Todd.

I think we should have a grace period for another [checks watch] 14 seconds on the use of “all lives matter” - after that then it’s ban o’clock.

Way to go, Todd! Stamp out racism immediately. We can't let it fester like a bad wound.

Until we are socio 3conomically equal we will always be subjugated by the system. There I said it.

this is about as well as I've ever seen this explained, and better than I've ever explained it, and I am one of those liberal lawyers who are supposed to be good at explaining shit.

Perhaps if you identify these other races you have noticed being treated with racial insensitivity here on BA it will help those of us who, like me, really never notice such a thing.

And, of course, it was made clear we are to report all racism.

Yup, lots of politics in those COVID-19 threads. And lots of politics in this thread.

Folks like to express thoughts of: you just don't get it. A sentiment that can often go both ways.

Non-cheers to discussing politics on a beer forum. Is there a PoliticsAdvocate forum for folks to go to?

I love spending time on this site, and I think 99.9% of our members are great people, but let’s please refrain injecting politics into it, in any form. @Todd and I’d put the thread title in that bucket.

We can all be conscientious and respectful without political slogans.

My father, a lifelong Democrat and union member, still doesn't get why that's a problematic line of reasoning. I've tried explaining with an example similar to your own, but he still refused to learn.

Sometimes these anti-hate groups actually are hate groups themselves and if you call them out on it you fall into a trap and will be labeled whatever they are anti-. I volunteer at the Salvation Army and last year watched there two largest donors (Chick Fil A, Bloomingdale) be harassed and badgered relentlessly until they agreed to cut the Army off just before Christmas last year and it was perpetrated by the LGBTQ community a community I at one time supported a community that calls themselves anti-hate.

I’m failing to understand how saying “Black Lives Matter” is a political statement. Can you and the couple others posting in this vein explain why to me?

Starting a post about universal basic income or nationalized healthcare - those would be political statements. Since a big segment of the country/political party(s) openly stand against those concepts, and have some sort of rationale/principles/semblance of logic underpinning their stance.

Is there another, credible side of the coin here? Is there a legitimate counter-debate that you want to own? If so have at it. I’m curious to hear.

Bravo to BA, and to some local NYC beer-centric places like Other Half, Root and Branch, Finback, and Bierwax (and I’m sure to many other people/businesses in the realm of beer across the country and the world) for openly taking a stand against racism.

Yes, I was replying to someone who indicated we need to be careful to apply the metric to other racism as well as racism directed at blacks.

I disagree. Everything is political. Classic Deadspin/Jemelle Hill are pretty good examples of how "STICK TO SPROTS1!1!" won out. But obviously, that's not fair. How tax money gets spent, such as on billionaires' sports stadiums vs. social programs is a very relevant topic. Black athletes feeling unsafe crosses into sports.
Is beer any different? Founder's institutionalized racism, climate change's impact on water resources and hop growth, the distribution of relief funds during COVID (particularly breweries)... And on and on.

Should black lives matter be political? No, but it is. There is a clear difference between many conservatives who feel personally attacked by the concept. Their identity is connected to this conservative ideology which struggles with this concept... You'll notice republican talking points focus on how this one incident is bad, but ignore the fact that Trump stopped the justice department's investigations into troubled police departments and their violations of civil rights. They're not advocating systemic change, that would be problematic. So I respect the sentiment, but does anyone believe Republican led federal government and judiciary is capable or willing to work on 400 years of injustice?
