Today's been kind of strange, but it's about to get a little bit better.

A relatively new offering from Nickel Brook Brewing Company called Metalhead DIPA. 85 IBU, 9.0% ABV and made with Citra, Simcoe and Ekuanot hops, with some berry notes as well. I’ve always had a soft spot for Citra hops and this is a very good DIPA.

Thought I was having some luck earlier this evening at the Westvleteren webshop. It is a bit of a complicated buying proces (and they don't ship ofcourse). I could order 3 cases Westvleteren 12. Wow!

One case Westvleteren #12 is 24 bottles and has a pricetag of just € 46,40 (translates to around $ 50, the math per bottle is easy). All cool.
Later in the proces it turned out I could not receive their text message / or the could not send (it is complicated indeed). Tried again an again. Did not work. After 10 minutes my change of buying some Westvleteren at the source was gone. Tried to log in to the shop again, but that did not work because you only get one change. Damn!

Still better compared to the old buying proces, endlessly dialing-in to hear a busy line on the other side.

I never sell any Westvleteren by the way. Drink it myself and normaly about a third I give away.

    Cheers!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass canned 6/9/20. Pours a hazy orange with a 3 finger sticky white head that nice thick foamy streaks of lace, with nice retention. 4.5

Smell is tangerine, lime, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows lime and grapefruit hits you upfront with tangerine and apricot trying to balance it out. Nice bitterness, not your average juice bomb. 4

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, a tad sticky and maybe a touch dry, plenty of life, and at 6.7% goes down pretty easy, but bigger in flavor than the ABV. 4.25

Overall I am a fan, a little old school bitterness, with the look of an a NEIPA. 4.25

Is that different than the Allagash Curieux?

That 't Ij collaboration sounds really interesting. I enjoyed my visit to that brewery, and I've been impressed with Duvel's hoppy stuff.

Also, super jealous of the chance of buying a case of Westvleteren. That would be so cool.

Clear amber body; lively carbonation; thick and creamy white head. The smell exudes spiciness and toasted malt with a touch of peppermint. The taste shows off slightly toasted malt notes and reinforces the spiciness found in the nose; well-rounded hop bitterness; clean. Medium body; slick and somewhat warm; mild alcohol presence and a soothing hop bite gives an otherwise gently sweet beer a bit of dryness.

This is a wonderful and delicious traditional German style beer. No frills or gimmicks, just good beer...

...listening to the latest Bill Frisell solo album...eh, so far it's not doing much for me...for instance, take this version of 'Ron Carter' vs the one from his 'Blues Dream' album...the BD cut is hands down more enjoyable to me...

Yes, Curieux is Tripel aged in bourbon barrels. Allagash Tripel is the base beer, and probably my favorite American Tripel.

Hey, BA. Big deal for me..Zombie Dust! This has been on my list since probably 2012, so I'm thrilled it's finally made it's way into my distro. Perhaps it's all the buildup in my head, but this is tasting like a perfect Pale Ale. cheers!

    Ah, nice.

I tried the Curieux as part of that Untappd virtual event and was pretty impressed with it. I recognized at that time it was barrel aged, and then I forgot. I'll have to pick up a bottle of that if I see it around.

Deep mahogany color to the body, transparent; gently rising carbonation; nice head for a high ABV beer. Boozy, oak-like aroma; muted caramel malt sweetness; red licorice. Rich flavors of heavy sweetness; figs and dates; bourbon; subtle honey; peppery. Heavy body; thick, oily, and chewy; heavy sweetness (not cloying) blended with a bold alcohol warmth; sticky.

This is how a powerhouse barleywine should be done! For one thing, many high ABV beers (the can lists this one at 15.8% ABV) just don't produce any kind of head, let alone a lasting one. Sure, the head collapses after a while, but there is still thin layer of foam sitting atop the glass. And the aroma and taste let you know in no uncertain terms that this is going to be a kick-ass beer. Dense and complex with tastes to linger over and savor.
