I think if I read the rules right, if you purchased a mystery box you agreed to make a cuvee of all 4 beers in the box.

Wish I could but this mystery bag is a bunch of 1st’s for me.
First time getting a mystery bag and a first time with Deth by cherries and VSOJ. I know I’ll enjoy both beers but I’m sure I’ll feel “meh” about cherries and I’m absolutely sure hype will over come my judgement on VSOJ. Looking forward to it.

    Hop Butcher collaboration release news:

-(re-release) Base: A West Coast-style Pale Ale with Amarillo, Chinook, Citra, Cashmere, Citra, and Centennial hops crowding the room at five pounds per barrel. Smooth, clean, and crackling with hops, the Base encompasses a massive foundation of flavors.⠀
    ⠀
    - (re-release) Superstructure: This Imperial Hazy IPA is fermented with British Ale V yeast and hit an immense dry hop including Mosaic, Citra, El Dorado, and Sabro. A velvet smoothness conveys huge waves of tropical fruit and citrus that define the Superstructure.⠀
    ⠀
    - (new) Maintains and Shapes: This Illinois Recreational Lager, complementing both Base and Superstructure, features Zappa, Strata, and Experimental Hop #0692 riding in on soft Pilsner and Vienna malts. The vibes are superior and the refreshment efficacious.

Both Base and Superstructure will be distro'd (IL/WI/IN/OH). The lager is brewery only. Rev Rewards will be able to preorder on Monday. Open to all on Tuesday. No limits. Pickups Friday through Sunday.

I did indeed pop that 2016 Straight Jacket. It did not gush. It was very tasty. Better than some of the Straight Jackets I remembered. Very thick mouthfeel. Toffee. Good Barley wine flavor and nice barrel. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. May have to Grab some of the releases this fall. Or maybe a Mystery box. Thanks again for all the help on the Old Gene's and the Old SJ's.

In the middle to early part of this past decade, a lot of breweries were barrel-aging sub-10% ABV beers. These tasted fine at the time, but do not age well, especially once the cold chain was broken and they're stored warm in a closet or sat on a store shelf for a year. As a quality measure, ABVs started increasing significantly to withstand the power of the barrel and increase package stability. For breweries who can afford it, pasteurization has proved to add another level of security and stability, without any drop-off in flavor. This is why your old Deth's Tars and Straight Jackets should be tasting great still, but a 5 year old 8-9% ABV barrel-aged porter or milk stout, not so much. This is also why you've seen Rev get more and more behind those recipes and actually continue pushing the ABV up over the last few years, to make sure the most reliable beer possible goes in the can.

To whomever had these last go, were these collabs worth it? I'm not going to cruise around looking for them at distro, and I would be interested in the lager so it's a city hike if I did...Just not sure if these collabs are worthy of the $90 case grab.

Personally, I thought they were just ok. Probably in no rush to find them this year.

I really liked Base, Superstructure was very good, a solid balanced NEIPA pour. Superstructure sold out quickly, Base was available for a few weeks, IIRC. Picked it up a few times.

@BeerCruncher , do you plan on also releasing draft versions of these pours at the brewpub this Friday?

They are going on draft TODAY at the Brewpub and I think 4-packs will be in the cooler too

As some of you have probably seen from the Bourbon County post, I'm just now returning to BA after a few month break (largely due to the craziness resulting from COVID).

I hate to be this guy, but any chance someone can provide a brief "update" on a few things? Reading through 10-20 pages to try to find information seems a bit tedious.
    • Any news on Deep Woods for 2020-2021 stout season?
    • Any summer developments I missed on BA beer releases?
    • Anything else especially notable I might want to go back and read about for the past 4-6 months?
    Thanks in advance.

I believe that info is coming very soon. Preview - it'll probably be awesome and expensive.

    Mixed Berry Ryeway happened.

Thanks. I honestly don't even know what that would taste like. I never got a chance to try Strawberry Jacket, and I've never had fruit in a -wine style beer. Maybe I'm not very imaginative.

It is good if you go into it expecting a ton of tart berries. They kind of drown out the nuance and barrel of the Ryeway, at least fresh. Will be interested to see how it integrates later.

Mineshaft Gap (Straight Jacket aged in cognac barrels for 12 months; my can dated 1/4/18) is tasting heavenly right now.

I liked it out of the gate, but found the cognac a bit forward (and boozy); a little over 2.5 years have softened that edge, and the base beer is shining with nice accents from the barrel and the spirit.

Hope I nab one next time I gamble on the 2 can mystery pack at the tap room!
