I think it's a joke on old packaging. In the 70s mostly. Some German beers showed up here in the states with the malt liquor designation. I have always thought the translators were very good comedians. I think it was all about US Federal Law....

That’s 7% though, the one in the OP is 6.4%.

If it’s the 1960’s Schlitz recipe they released a few years ago I’d be totally in!

Okay, clues to nationwide: both breweries marked on the can, so both brewing it = larger quantities. #2: Indicia on the back calling it a seasonal and no mention of a local -- seems to infer it's more than just a small regional release.

All that speculated, it sure doesn't show here:

    BTW -- it's 6.8%.

New hydrometer at the brewery?

Also just noticed -- the can label says 16 oz. Hmm.

Gotcha, wasn’t sure if you were implying it was the same beer or not.

Although as you mention below, the ABVs are awfully similar...

Damn, yeah you’re right. 6.4% was what Glissade was.

Too many Bocks from Sierra Nevada...well, sort of. None of them actually exist at our local shops...

To me, this looks like a potential spring seasonal for 2022.

    - the label implies that it's a spring seasonal
    - it's not on the 2021 release calendar
    - Sierra Nevada is switching their seasonals to cans starting this summer
    - sorry, but I didn't expect Wanderland to be a repeat

I'm betting we have a long wait for this one... but it's very nice to see that Sierra Nevada hasn't turned their back on lagers. I will certainly pick this up if it's the 2022 spring seasonal, but since I'm a downer, I can't imagine it becoming much of a sales hit... and like Wanderland, I'd be surprised to see it become a repeat. Would love to be wrong.

The posters above probably already said it, but some states require beers above a certain ABV to be labeled as malt liquors.

Oddly enough, this also happened with Spaten Oktoberfest. More fittingly Sammischlaus (now brewed by the Austrian brewery Eggenberg) is labeled a malt liquor, and that one is a whopping 14% ABV.

I remember it from the 80s to the mid 90s, but I guess it was still in some markets even in the oughts. The "malt liquor" label seems to harken back to those days, but it was definitely an all malt lager. As good or better than Glissade, as I remember it- and not as hop forward.

80s & 90s? Malt Liquor screams 70s to me. It will be interesting to find out why they're using the term.
