Todd shut the glitch thread down before I could jump in and take the topic off the rails...

@Todd said: "Yeah. Those pages are exact matches..."

Yes, but wouldn't it be pissah if you could see places near where you were searching? I mean, if you're looking at a big city, that's fine but, if you're looking at East Cupcake, you might want to see West Cupcake, too, and maybe all the contiguous towns, villages and hamlets. So say, by zip code and then plus all adjacent zip codes. Unless there's some way of doing that that I've never noticed.

Just because I know that I'm not the one who's going to have to code it.

Is county used in the search algorithm? Because a place or two in Jackson, Missouri (city) shows up in the Kansas City, Missouri suggested list. KCMO's county is Jackson County.

    Two completely different things.
    1. The other thread was referring to when you click on a city within the Places directory, which uses an exact match on the city name. Like this: https://www.beeradvocate.com/place/list/?city=Mount+Vernon&c_id=US&s_id=WA
    2. You're referring to how we pull places for city beer guides. Like this: https://www.beeradvocate.com/place/city/18/, which also pulls by city name, but supports multiple cities/towns/villages (see note at the bottom of the page).
For the latter, we could switch this to zip code, but we'd either have to match on multiple zip codes or partial zip codes. This starts to breakdown for international, which would still need to rely on city.

Ideally, we'd assign each places a longitude and latitude and then do a radius search, but this would require a complete overhaul, constant maintenance/updating, and hooking into a third party solution. But I don't see any of this happening anytime soon as it's not a priority.

In this case, it matches on the list cities and state.

But Jackson, MO is on the other side of the state from Kansas City, MO. Clicking on "Jackson, Missouri" in BA only shows the one listing, but this place listing is still lumped into the Kansas City, MO directory. Jackson, MO is in Cape Girardeau County.

Was always unsure how the two collided.

As per the note on the bottom of the Beer Guide: Kansas City, Missouri
It's been set like this for at least a decade now.

Ah. I know I asked about this awhile back. I was told they matched, but was still confused.

There still is no Jackson, MO in Jackson County though. Jackson, MO is in the Cape Girardeau County. This county is southwest of St. Louis - opposite end of I-70 from Kansas City.

First line on Jackson, MO's Wikipedia is:

Easy fix. Done. And the one place that matched has automagically dropped from the page.

We used to have the ability to somewhat search by phone number using the area code, so you could throw in 201 as an example and get everything for that corner of North Jersey. I liked that a lot.

That was extremely helpful for me when planning a pub crawl into a large, mostly rural area where I know breweries exist but I'd like to see them on a list.

Unfortunately, there's only one of me at the moment, there are much bigger things on my plate, and then there's still this question: What are we going to do with Places?

    I'm thinking:

    A) Enhance
    B) Imperial/Double it.
    C) Make more gooder
    D) All of the above

We could always “embrace ratings “ on places.

The "Nearby" feature used to work like that (although only for Places in the database before a certain point). How was that different?

I used to use the "Nearby" feature all the time when traveling for work, until it was removed.
