Not sure if I'm the only one who will find it funny to think if all the variants of Clencher should be mixed with all the variants of (Industrial Arts) Wrench. Okay, back to NBW, I'll see myself out.

[IMG] Poured into a 20 oz Snulip glass canned this week. Pours a very hazy dark orange with a 2 finger sticky off white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention.. 4.5

Aroma is honeydew, passionfruit, mango, tangerine, and apricot. 4.5

Taste follows honeydew, passionfruit, mango, tangerine, and apricot amazingly balanced. 4.75

Mouthfeel is above average, soft gentle creamy carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 7% it drinks bigger but really easy going down. 4.75

Overall this is a really impressive NEIPA, I will say I am pretty blown away by this one. Highly recommend. 4.5

Just so I'm clear on this - you liked this beer a bit more than you enjoyed the Funky Buddha beer, correct?

    :sunglasses:

Me rating a beer - especially a beer from a "special" box - in the 3.5 range is roughly in line with your rating, though I will say the 1.0 you tossed in for look was nice because that was one bufugly beer.

You mentioned a heavy tequila note multiple times, which I didn't pick up on per se (because I've literally not had tequila in literally 40 years), and I did say I was glad I got to try it, because I saw glimpses of a pretty decent beer as it warmed, but I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment that the beer was a hot mess, because it was.

    But it was definitely extreme!

Our daughter and grandkids arrived last night, and we are having a nice visit. The two-year-old has great speech. I was worried about her language development, but she's quite verbal. Her brother is seven months old, and he's just this happy-go-lucky kid.
My new beer for today is from a brewery in Santa Fe, Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery. This is their Mole Stout, barrel aged with New Mexico red chile, cinnamon, and chocolate.
The beer is black, with a good-sized tan head and a bit of lace.
Aroma of chocolate, pepper, and spice. The pepper stands out.
Taste of chocolate, then cinnamon, then chile. On the hotter side.
Fantastic mouthfeel. The nice burn from the chile lingers for quite some time.
My first beer from this brewery, and it's a winner!

That's Cocomelon on tv in the background. I'm sure most, if not all, parents of young children are familiar with it. Dangerous stuff for the adult brain.

The look is like the sun smiling down on you. The smell is tropical fruits. Mango, orange, lemon, and pineapple. The taste is amazing! Zesty lemon, lime, honeydew, pineapple, and mango. The mouthfeel is pillowy soft, south, soupy, with low carbonation. Overall, this beer, like about every beer I have experienced by Three Phase Brewing, is absolutely remarkable!

I'm not busting your balls here, but you gave that ugly thing a 4.5 for appearance? If I was rating that, the looks would sub-2.

Greetings fellow NBsers! A clear, sunny day here in the Fourth Corner, highs over 50 the last couple days, with some flowers starting to push through the dirt, and a few early trees show the first hints of buds.

I'll be watch the Superb Owl commercials @Immolator 's house, where he has also called for a Stout bottle share. Sigh. Not sure how much posting I'll get done today, but I'm sure y'all understand.

Starting off with another I received recently from @Whyteboar , Founders Frootwood. The bourbon and maple are a bit heavy at first, but the cherry helps balance them out. pretty nice beer.

Ha, I did see your 3-range rating and thought, "that has to be pretty bad"

Though since you brought it up and to be fair to @FBarber - I have to ask why did you give it an "average 3" for a "bufugly beer." Embrace the lower end of the rating scale!

    Hey NBS
Barrel Aged Maple Brig from Springdale Beer Company
    Aged 1 to 2 years
    [IMG]

Poured from a bomber labeled batch #3
Dark brown color big fluffy tan head that dissipates to a slight cap and little lacing. It was at about 60 degrees when I drank it

Aroma of oak, bourbon, alcohol and maple syrup. Mocha is there but barely noticeable

Taste is predominantly oak like, some bourbon and maple is hinted. Mocha is not there to me

Mouthfeel is slick and fairly thin. There is a tingle at the finish and a lingering stickyness and the barrel taste

Overall I was expecting more flavor, it was kind of muted and thin. The sticky feel was lactose and mocha but it took awhile to taste the mocha and I didn’t get a coffee note.

    Ale-Mania - Miss Wit

Wibier with orange rind, coriander and mint, from Germany (5.1%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep golden coloration with a medium, fluffy, lasting head. Smells of doughy malt, citrus and spice, with notes of orange rind and coriander, as well as just a hint of mint.

Taste is an excellent balance of doughy malt, slightly zesty, orange rind, coriander and mint, as well as some fruity hops coming through as well, with accents of peach and strawberry. Finishes with a light bitterness and some orange rind, coriander and mint lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a light/medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

I really enjoyed this one a lot, mainly due to the excellent balance here. You can really taste all the different additives distinctly, without any of them feeling overwhelming or overpowering the others though, while the doughy malts add just a bit of light sweetness into the mix and the Hüll Melon hops offer some light fruity accents as well.

Overall, this makes for a very nice Wit with a bit of a twist, that feels light and refreshing, yet quite flavorful, with a great carbonation as well.

I'm hoping our friendly questioning of scoring doesn't turn people off to the thread, as I feel we both believe their words matter more. Though knowing your proclivities, I feel I could perhaps argue the reverse of what I have been, on occasion

I am really sensitive to tequila - especially in beers. I had a bad experience and that smell/flavor is burned into my memory. BUT, that is not to say I dislike tequila in all beers. Bells did a gose aged in tequila barrels which was really good. (Someone in our NBS BIF will be getting to try that one shortly) and the Founders mas agave beers were also really good. So it's not like it cannot be done well - Its just that Funky Buddha did not do it here.

Looks like a well-attended NBW this week! I guess that makes sense considering the Super Bowl. Been a week since my ex dumped me. We would've been hanging out with her friends today (yeah, she made plans for us to do so then left me... I don't get it but whatever), but instead I'm hanging out at home in the virtual bar! Today, I've been working on homework for both my microbiology and chemistry classes, and I've made enough progress that I feel like a beer is definitely in order! Up first is Other Half's Double Galaxy Daydream, an 8.5% "imperial oat cream India pale ale" double dry-hopped with Galaxy hops, canned 1/25/22. Sounds good, even though I hate the term "oat cream IPA" almost as much as I hate "pastry stout" as a style descriptor. Anyway...

The pour is, well, opaque as hell. Semi-sloppy collar of meringue-like foam that laces in grandiose tiers as it slowly fades down to about a quarter-finger. Macro-bubbles present on the surface even after the dissipation of the suds. It's not the most attractive hazy IPA I've seen, and I think it could use some work in the retention and legs department. This type of thing isn't really about how nice it looks, though, and I get that. Still think it could do better.

Nose is showing off a good amount of intense spice backed by pungent pine and tropical fruit that runs the entire spectrum of mango to passion fruit, though I have to say that there is a specific dankness to this that really pushes it into a delectable dimension. Hints of starfruit and grassiness punch through the massive fruitiness, and a hint of the oats comes across as well with a slight malty dimension. Apricot and tangerine round it all out in a nice way, subtly inflecting this semi-aggressive beer with some nuances I didn't really expect.

Feel is a little thin bodied for the ABV, and the flavor profile is a little more bland than I thought it would be considering the powerful nose. It's a touch plasticy honestly, and the strong punchiness from the hops is felt more as bitterness and hop-burn than the intriguing elements present from my initial exploration of the smell. Hints of dank grassiness and spice with sticky mango here and there. Honestly feeling this is a bit under-par, unfortunately. Not really a bad drink, but the Galaxy DDH just does not come across on the palate for me. It's almost kind of boring, actually.

I have one more Other Half beer I grabbed yesterday... that'll be up in a bit. Think I can manage one more new one after that too, and it's one I have mixed trepidation and excitement about. I need to do laundry, work on a new budget, and probably clean a bit before that though... cheers all. I hope you BAs are having a wonderful day, no matter what it may be that you're doing!

Funny thing was, I was just joining in mid-thread (hadn't read the thread at all, had been tagged near there) ready to post my entry, when I saw @SawDog505 's post. it was only after I posted my entry and started back scrolling the thread that I saw the topic was already well underway. Again, not an attack on Sawdog, or anyone else, I just don't understand how folks can give such high scores to such ugly beers.

With the way that the aspects are weighted, the Appearance metric is only worth 5% of a beers score. If folks are worried about "damaging" a beers end number, I would encourage them to go to one of their reviews and lower the appearance significantly, and see how little it counts. I've always thought looks should be weighted higher, cuz I spend a helluva lot more time looking at a beer than drinking it.

Good point - it's one I brought up to @FBarber over on Discord (as I recall) when we talked about how ugly a flat beer is. Even HotD beers, intentionally still, aren't pretty.

And your point is well taken - I do feel more liberal with a lower-weighted aspect like look. That has a flip side (as does any algorithm); I can really like a beer even though its nose is kinda weak. A bad nose score can drag a computed beer rating down, though, lower than I think it should (especially considering style). But I've lived with it for 8+ years on the site, you even longer, so maybe it's not such a big deal after all :grinning:
