    This is how I do it. Sometimes information on the label or brewer website is a bit thin but I double check and always add a full review. I mean, I'm drinking the beer at the time so may as well add a review.

    What I find annoying and a bit puzzling is all the beers that are incorrectly listed as retired when I’ve had them recently. Who reports beer as retired? How do you know it will never be brewed again?

    I think the site is set up so that after a certain length of time (2 years?) without a review, the beer automatically gets retired, and we have to submit an update.

    My source for a list of Michigan breweries that I referenced above is mibrewtrail.com (MBT) which I thought was pretty much up to date when I first saw it. I reconciled that list against the Michigan Brewers Guild (MBG), and that list added 96 places. However, a number of them are production locations of breweries on the MBT list (which doesn't show production locations), as well as a number of wineries and distillers which may or may not be brewing beer but have the license to do so it ever they want to.

    In my original post I thought that the list of Michigan breweries here on BA was well short of the actual number of Michigan breweries. Reconciling BA against the MBT and MBG lists shows that BA is short 64 places which is almost 20% of the current BA list (again, some are production locations, wineries or distilleries that may not need to be listed on BA). But I was pleasantly surprised to find that BA has 38 places that aren't on the other two lists. Some of these are likely to be non-members of the Guild, some may be closed breweries that no one has reported yet to BA, and some are likely caught in the gaps between publication dates of the other two lists and some with very recent opening dates that BA members were eager to get added to BA.

    Those 64 places cited above that are not on BA could be researched to see if they could be added, but to do that would mean they'd be added without a visit to be able to write a review of the places or the beers. If it's okay to do that per this thread as long as accuracy is present, over time, I may be able to get it done. But it's not a priority, and it certainly doesn't sound like it will be any fun.

    If Michigan might be almost 20% short on the real number, I imagine other states may be in the same situation.

    I have gone back into the “Notes” field, and fessed-up with my goof.

    What they are make believe? Are you sayin that all these years I’ve been saving-up for redemption on a special trade or festival for nothing? Nuts!

    True. Sometimes typing and entering my reviews takes a while. Right now my backlog is about three months. Such a slacker.

    I did this for a distant relative’s brewery in Guam. Just because I thought it might help folks add reviews. All to no avail, and the brewery/brew-pub is very successful. Still haven’t gotten to sample their beer. And I do feel guilty for the effort.

    A damn shame, I love your reviews! But yes, I get your point that it is very important to add beers to the database for a robust data set. Admittedly this is something I need to do more, as I usually only add beers I plan on reviewing

    It is always preferable to have the beer added and listed in the database as opposed to not in the database. There have been many times I sat down at a brewery, when to rate a beer, saw it wasnt there and then just said forget it, since I didn't want to sit on my phone and and spend the time adding it. If I, a moderator who am very invested in the site am making that decision, how much more so for people who are just hoping to casually tick a beer here a la untappd. By all means, add a full review. I try to add a full review of as many beers as I can, but sometimes the lag time between adding the beer and actually getting around to reviewing it, is a little while (as @BBThunderbolt pointed out).

    This:
    If a beer is auto retired, but you know for a fact it's still being brewed - just submit an update and we will un-retire it. The auto retiring is in place for these types of breweries that turn out 365 beers a year - with no real update on if any beer is coming back or not.

    Okay it makes sense to get the beer added at the minimum. And also I do update when I see a retired beer still being brewed.

    Speling is also good, although fairly rare and expensive.

    And yet, I feel singled out since a recent add of mine was modified without CANtacting me first. I know the rules and had a justifiable reason for ignoring them.

    @FBarber mentions his hesitancy as a Moderator and yet it was a Moderator who led to my disCANtinuing the practice of reviewing beers. Take a look at my 24 January 2021 reviews and one of them mentions my profound frustration.

    Each time that something that I do on here gets modified without the CANtesy of a CANtact first, I bristle. I am NOT a Pooh-Bah for nothing. I know the vagaries inside and out and if I ocCANsionally color outside of the lines, it is not out of ignorance, but due to some reason that may not be readily obvious to a hidebound Moderator. I was an early (~ 1985) programmer/data base user who understands Boolean logic better than most and if my entry does not CANform to current site naming standards, it is because I am trying to avoid an Update later!

    I am not saying that EVERY user should be CANtacted, but with my entries which are being made purposefully, I should be extended the benefit of the doubt.

    InsCANces like these are what led to pull back and if they CANtinue, I may have to rethink my involvement yet again.

    Could you describe the situation with a little more detail so that we, the uninformed, can try to understand what exactly your complaints are? Cheers.

    I’m trying to address this by drinking as many beers as I can so I can find these issues of beers added with errors so I can edit them out, but I need the night off today if you don’t mind lmao :wink:

    I suppose, beers could be added but then are:
    aged;
    accidentally destroyed;
    maliciously destroyed;
    forgotten about or stolen.
    But it does occasionally irk me but not as mych as it did.

    You can do whatever want, I just don't see the value in adding beers without a rewiew. Anyone can look up beers on a breweries web site and add them to BA, but what does it accomplish. The difference between this site and other sites is that this site has more info about beers as apposed to "Joe is drinking beer X at brewery Y and just earned the whoop-de-do badge"

    The value is to this site we all use. If the beer is already in the database, people are more likely to provide a rating and/or review.

    01-24-2021 & PA Pride Double IPA | Chatty Monks Brewing | BeerAdvocate with the latter being sorted (for the time being).

    The latter was added as it appears now & ChANged to simply "PA Pride", which was a HUGE mistake! This is the fifth beer in an ongoing series, EACH brewed by a DIFFERENT brewery. And EACH in a different style, including Kolsch, Hazy IPA, Hazy Pale Ale and one other.

    Had it remained as simply "PA Pride", that would be problematic in and of itself, due to the various styles involved. It would be CANpounded by the fact that each one is brewed by a different brewery. CAN you imagine the resulting CANfusion?

    I CAN, as evidenced on sister site, Untappd. There, the beers are attributed to the maltster and not the brewer and under all sorts of name variations.

    I was trying to cirCANvent all of this with my initial add and yet some Mod decided that they knew better than me.

    All it would have taken was a BeerMail to clarify my intent, but as usual, the Mods knew better than me ,,, until it was pointed out that they didn't.

    I do not do CANything on here lightly or CANpriciously and I feel as though I deserve better. You might disagree.
