Catch-all thread for beer happenings in the Kansas City metro in 2023.

    For a 2022 recap...

    - Breweries that opened or expanded in the metro in 2022: River Bluff (second location in KCMO), Pivo Project (a sub-brewery of BKS in KCMO),Tall Trellis (Olathe), Boho (Parkville); Rochester opened a taproom in Parkville.
    - Breweries that closed in 2022: Calibration (North Kansas City) and Lost Evenings (Lenexa)
    - Breweries that won medals at GABF were BKS (gold - Rockhill & Locust), River Bluff (silver - Brother-Brother), and City Barrel (bronze - Rad AF).
    - Of note among non-brewery locations that closed in 2022, Bier Station closed on New Year's Eve - it will reopen as a City Barrel taproom.

One item that I forget to mention in the initial 2022 recap post and one new bit of information:

    ---

    - The owners of Double Shift (KCMO) sold the brewery to Red Sash (located < 100 ft to the west); as of now, Red Sash plans on keeping both spaces open as breweries/taprooms.

    ---

City Barrel released some additional information about their plans for the former Bier Station space:

"The space at 120 E Gregory will continue to be known as a community and family gathering place. City Barrel will bring our signature brand of an inclusive atmosphere, friendly service, specialty cocktails, select wines and above all, great food with innovative and approachable craft beers. The new concept will be called City Barrel Pizza + Patio and will debut a New York-style pizza kitchen and an expanded, covered heated patio with a fire feature.

Open date is targeted for Summer 2023."

Damn, Bier Station closed?? That place was great. :slight_frown:

Double Shift was the only brewery i've been to that "didn't do tasters". Flights I can understand, but I just wanted a couple 4 ouncers before committing to a pint.

Friction Brewing (Shawnee) should open up in the coming months. Should be a great addition to the scene. Long time coming for those guys

I kept hearing Double Shift was under new ownership, but never bothered to ask who bought them out. Interesting.

BKS is finally in local distribution for draft!

Oak & Steel has both Alma Mader & BKS on tap, and occasionally Side Project.

Alma Mader sent out their first 2023 membership email, but no word on the specific beer yet. I have not checked Untappd to see if there are any hints there.

It's been a while since we've visited KC, what would be a good spot to visit for a selection of local brews? Also interested in breweries with taprooms. TIA.

Oak & Steel generally has 8-10 (out of 24 total) taps on from local breweries - many of which see very limited distribution outside of the breweries’ own taprooms.

I’m hard-pressed to think of any breweries that *don’t* operate taprooms at this point - the only real limiting factor is that many taprooms have limited hours/are closed on weekdays. In my opinion, the top two breweries to visit in the metro currently are Alma Mader and BKS; if having a reasonably-full food menu is a draw, City Barrel, Torn Label, and KC Bier Co. are also good options.

I agree with @swid on the brewery recommendations.

A bit of it also depends on what you're after in terms of beer styles and environment. BKS Artisan Ales made their name on NE IPAs / IPAs, but have since developed a lager label (Pivo Project). Alma Mader is more lager focused, but is still IPA dominate.

If you're more out west, I'd put Pathlight on that list to visit as well. If I was just going to spend the evening in one spot and wanted to try KC beer, I'd go to Oak & Steel though. Great taplist and is one of the few that gets Alma Mader and BKS (and Side Project) on tap.

Also, if you're driving in from Iowa, there is a new Czech/German style brewery up in Parkville, MO. I have yet to make it up there, but it's the first new brewery in the area I've actually been excited about. Looks like they're focusing on traditional style Czech and German style beers (though, you can get great Czech style lagers at Alma Mader and German beers at KC Bier.)

Be curious how this one tastes. Last I had No Touchy (on tap) I thought it was really, really good. On par with Anabasis (sample size = 1)

Snagged a half pour after work and bought six cans. I knew from the nose that it was going to be a bullseye. Highly recommend. $60/4 pk

Drinking it now. Debating buying more cans. One of my favorite KC BA releases.

Alma Mader membership release in about 8 days. We'll see what that brings to the barleywine party.

I don’t really know status, to be honest. Maybe someone else has more info? If cans aren’t around when you come through, shoot me a message and I can get ya one. I’m gone March 9/10, however.

It looked like they had a shelf full when I was there, but hard to say if that's all they had.

They are good about answering the phone for a quick inventory question.

First Alma Mader membership bottle pick up this weekend. Four new BA beers released!

Time Before // Barrel-aged Imperial Winter Ale // 13% ABV
Heaven Hill Bourbon & Rye barrels for 22 months

Time Before (Coconut & Cacao) // Barrel-aged Imperial Winter Ale // 13% ABV
Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels for 22 months

Veneer of Reality // Barrel-aged Imperial Stout // 14% ABV
Sazerac Rye barrel for 22 months

    Bridge of Fog // Barrel-aged Barleywine // 14.4% ABV
Old Forester 1910 barrels for 24 months

Pretty darn excited for all of these, but probably most excited for the last two. Sounds like no bottle pours on site due to the limited quantity, so we'll see when I can get around to opening some of these up.
