They're definitely harder to find. Barrel aged ones are really tough, and you feel like you won $50 on a scratch ticket when you stuble across them in the wild. Unfortunately, a lot of times, you have to either get them from the brewery, or wait for them to pop up on Tavour

I agree...We split the one I had but it was significantly better than the other Wendigos, and I rated them high to begin with.

3 Sheeps Deeply Rooted tawny port barrel aged. 2021 bottle.

This is pretty good. The port notes are smokey almost to the point of charred while the booze adds plenty of heat and a nice, dry vinous note with hints of raisin.

The base beer seems to be very much on the dry side for an English barleywine. Almost tea like and herbal with charred toffee that is all but completely devoid of sweetness.

Interesting and fun to try, but not one I need to revisit.

This is why I seek out barley wines. So much room for experimenting. This Tree House Double Baked is an outlier and worth seeking.

L: Deep with clear head like a Pepsi
S: Sour watery apple with brandy, cinnamon. Is this safe to drink?
T: Apple punches at go, sweet moving towards rot but in a good way. Wood and 40 year old regrets. Layers on layers, taste and sensation like a roulette wheel.
F: Thick especially if you agitate it. Bone broth left to chill. On the verge of fish stock left overnight.
O: Amazing, adult candy. The forbidden fruit worth leaving the garden. Seek it like a missile fired at a Mig with engine problems.

Been hearing only the highest praise for this. Back in my degenerate days (no kids) I would surely have gone up a couple times to get multiple. Sadly now, I haven't been there for the better part of a year and missed it

2016 Old Ruffian from Great Divide. Sad that this isn't brewed anymore. So good fresh and aged. Poured at fridge temp. Nose is full of caramel, plums, apricots, sweet candy, and slight hops. The taste is amazing. The toffee is clearly more prevalent with age. The hops are there, but they play in the background here. Raisins, citrus peel, tree sap, leather, and some nice bready malts. Great beer!

Yeah, this beer and Avery's Hog Heaven at one time represented Colorado very well in the barleywine category

Barreled Souls Bombs Over Barley aged in Parker’s Heritage Heavy Char barrels. 14.4%. Aroma is amazing. Heavy on the Vanilla Coke, oatmeal raisin cookies, marshmallow and Manhattan’s. Sweet but complex.

I was very impressed with this BW collab...Holy Mountain and Cellarmaker! Really balanced between the sweet caramel malty notes and the barrel. Review here.

Central Waters Barleywine Ale - aged two years in bourbon.

Canned 02/22/2023. Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky dark brown with a small amount of head. The nose is intense bourbon, oak, toffee, alcohol, spice, raisins, prunes, and a touch of mint.

The taste is fantastic. Some oak bitterness, caramel, bourbon, vanilla, dark bread, spice, leather, plums. This is right along the lines of a Wulver. Intense barrel character. I'm starting with the 2 year old, and will move along to the 3, 4, and 5. I can only imagine how much the barrel influences those! The aftertaste on this one is booze, raisins, and a touch of leather.
