They did that when they went back to an all-malt recipe. Well, in a very tame version. (Next to the pilsner glass, below).

It did not sell like crazy. Thus this and the other current Michelob thread.

The pilsner glass looks like a bargain basement "second". Was AB hinting at their opinion of the bottle? AB kept Bud at the top of the market for about 50 years, and Michelob at the top of the super-premiums too, so they know (or knew) about effective promotion. The problem is that when a brand starts sliding it's almost always the beginning of the end. Today the superpremium category is filled with Mexican beers and precious metal light beers, most all on the lighter side. People who fondly remember Michelob are usually over the hill like me. The ads aim at the people born less than 40 years ago (probably way less) who can out-drink me with ease.

I don't know, it's got that swell, offset stem and gold-plated trim on the lip.

Strikes me funny that the glass is full, yet the cap is still on the bottle -- what was that about knowing effective promotion?

I agree with this. I so much wanted to love those Michelob craft offerings and while they were ok they never rose to the level of the better craft beers at the time..

    That was pretty good too.

The Rye PA is an IPA. The only one that I can remember from the Michelob line.

Edit: Ha! I added that beer and pic to BA.

Michelob Ultra 40 ounce cans is the next big thing.....Bud Light 40 cans still lead in the litter competition in the neighborhood and seltzers and ciders have dropped way off, says Ed Norton......

I have yet to see 40 ounce cans. When did this format become available?

    Cheers!

Sorry Jack. It's a bad joke. Hopefully there'll never be such a package. It would be a good spoof ad with all of the trim perky people chugging 40s of Ultra....

I hate to break it to you, Jack. But it ain’t just the InBud sharks.

Every brewery brewing more than a thimbleful at a time is looking for the next big thing.

In that sense it’s a wonder that some of these heritage brands have made it as far as the 2020s.

And another marketing 'strategy' is using a separate branding line such as the Voodoo Ranger products from New Belgium Brewing

A thread discussing how Victory is doing similar sub-branding via Monkey is being discussed right now:

It's interesting. Is this beer so forgotten that it's not getting reported by anyone? If I search the web for news of its discontinuation, I find literally nothing. The only sources that I have are the liquor stores that I've been able to get it at, claiming that it's discontinued. I mean could you imagine if it was Corona, Coos Light, or Miller Lite. It would be easy to find reports of it being discontinued.

I don't think I've seen regular Michelob although I've never actively seeked it out I do remember the Michelob Munich lager being pretty good though I haven't seen that one in awhile.

Was Tony Faust the brewmaster? With a name like that the beer has to be good (he sold his soul...).

No, friend of Adolphus/local St. Louis restaurateur.
According to the book on the Anheuser-Busch dynasty, Under the Influence, "Over 100 men could belly up to a long oaken bar manned by five or six busy bartenders...When he was in St. Louis, Adolphus went to Faust's every afternoon..."

As noted in the 1889 quote, he had his own beer brewed by AB which has continued to pop up frequently over the years .

I'm sure he never tired of that comment...:grimacing:

Definitely more of a hop impression than basic AAL's...
