Looks like Jack's Abby is stealing a page from the Sierra Nevada playbook and collaborating with a German brewery for Oktoberfest

I hope that Jack's Abby widely distributes this beer, I would like to be able to buy it.

    Prost!

"Available in Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and Southern Maine starting August 18, and for a limited time."

I was hoping to see this in Maryland but it looks like i'll have to find a proxy.

That is disappointing news but I am not surprised. Jack's Abby produces a number of 'specialty' beers that I would like to buy but sometimes (often?) they limit the distribution of those beers.

    Oh well!?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Prost!

@Todd -- can I edit my BA Oktoberfest box request?

    Hmm. "Atypical hops." Nevermind.

Thought the same when I saw that. I guess they have to try something different to standout. But just a collab between the two was interesting enough. Still wouldn't mind trying it but won't be available down here in GA anyway.

Someone mentioned "IPLs" in the Helles thread, "IPF?"

Suppose I'll have to make the short jump up 91! Thanks for sharing, Weihenstephaner Fest was a standout last year (particularly in cans)

Does Weihenstephan typically decoct and horizontally lager their beers?

I know at least with decoction, it isn't as widespread with German brewers as it used to be.

I will not specifically address "typical" but Weihenstephan does implement both methods (i.e., decoction vs. infusion mashing) depending on the brand.

Below is a short video where Tobias Zollo (headbrewer at Weihenstephan) discusses this topic. For the Helles beer they choose to conduct infusion mashing but for the Original Premium they choose to conduct decoction mashing.

I would encourage you to watch/listen to the discussion concerning oxidation, cooking, handling & mechanics which occurs during the decoction mashing method and where Tobias details this provides a "harder" flavor to the beer.

    Prost!

I'm looking forward to this. Curious to see how the atypical hops come into play--part (well maybe most) of me wishes they had just turned this into a skill piece, i.e., showcase the best possible festbier they can brew.

I wonder if they will add it to the fest variety pack that is on their distribution calendar for August (and whether they are still planning to release that pack). I've been wondering what the four varieties would be, with Copper Legend an obvious inclusion and the limited release Munich fest and marzen kellerbier that they put out in the last couple of years high on my list.

How the hops are utilized will be impactful to the sensory qualities of the resulting beer. For a beer style like Festbier it is likely the Jack’s Abby brewing team utilizes a light hand here.

I have experience brewing with Sterling hops which was breed using some Saaz hops. It has noble-like qualities.

“Sterling Hops: The Locally-Grown Substitute For Saaz”

    https://learn.kegerator.com/sterling-hops/

I have no brewing experience using Adeena hops but from my readings:

“Meaning noble, gentle, and delicate, AdeenaTM is a cross between SummitTM and an English male, has been used as a replacement for Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Styrian Golding.”

The above would indicate that Adeena hops also has noble-like qualities.

If you get a chance to buy/drink this beer please let us know what you think.

    Prost!
