I'm glad the family seems to be on the mend. You got to see the storied Generals! WOW. I hear they don't have the best record against a certain rival. Wonder if it's due to the "questionable" reffing.

Wow. Tynt Meadow. An English Trappist Ale, per the bottle. BA lists it as an English Strong. I didn't know that category existed, more familiar with the Belgian brotherhood. I'd seen this a few times in the forums, but don't readily find it near me. Picked it up in Richmond last month, kinda forgot about it.
Popped it open tonight and was instantly hooked. Initial taste is Belgian creaminess, without the yeast. Finishes like a Barleywine. 7.4% ABV. A blind test would rate it 2-3 points higher.
Will need to search this out going forward.

Hope your son gets better soon and hope you can catch up on some rest whenever that comes. It’s not nearly as often as us parents of kids would like, but I hope it graces you this week @Coronaeus.

On the plus it seems like your daughter had an extra awesome day.

So I picked up a couple cans of Guinness Extra Stout today along with a packaged corned beef and a head of cabbage to cook for St. Patrick’s Day—checked the BA entry for this beer when I got home and realized I’d never reviewed it. So here you go, preliminary review below. Cheers!

19.2oz can into an English pint glass. Pours a uniform brownish black with a big, loose, sudsy tannish-white head that settles to a nice seafoam cap on the beer, some patchy lace around the sides of the glass.

Aroma is roasty and a bit minerally, subtle, delicate, clean. Not picking up notes of much anything, but what’s there suggests dark roasted malt and water.

Taste is likewise clean and malty, a blend of bitter and sweet. The quality of the water is on full display here—beers often mask or hide the taste of the water behind massive malt and hops, but here it’s used as an ingredient just as important as the others.

Mouthfeel is also not watery but also not thick, heavy, or chewy. In a word, this beer is drinkable. One could easily put away several pints without thinking much about it or even necessarily tasting the beer all that much. Nice dry finish leaves you constantly craving another sip.

Overall, it’s safe to say there’s a reason Guinness is as popular as it is. This is an enjoyable, unassuming, straightforward beer that is clearly made quite well. My socks are not knocked off, my head is not blown. I can simply enjoy this classic stout for what it is.

Day 2, Happy St Patrick’s Day, NBSers. I have a couple of beers from Land Grant Brewing, a brewery in Columbus OH that I visited this past Wednesday.

I’m a fan. This first beer is described on the can as a hybrid between the hazy style and WCIPA. I’m intrigued to see how they do with that dance.

Pours an unfiltered golden color and sports a sudsy white head that provides modest lacing and a nice little cap atop the body of the beer. The nose is all tropical fruit, with mango, candied orange, and juicy tangerine aromas.

The taste is a direct reflection of the nose, with the mango and juicy tangerine most prominent and delicious, with some candied orange for good measure and a nice bit of cereal grains for a welcome balance.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly dry, putting this firmly in that “hazy WCIPA hybrid” space that I enjoy if it’s done well, and this is. Very well done by a new brewery to me.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into my Brasseurs De Garde flute.

Pale, cloudy, candlelight gold body supports a thick magnolia cap. Rich, sticky, crenellated lacing; good retention.

Bright, assertive aroma with citrus, winter fruit, wildflowers, and funk.

Puckering and astringent on the palate - wood sorrel, crushed lemons, and young sheng tea. Persistent bitterness offsets the wild/peppery Brett. and barrel notes. Mineral-kissed, very dry finish with hints of orange zest, tropical fruit, flowers and goat yogurt. Some returning sweetness suggests apricots and kumquat.

    Medium-bodied, active carbonation, weirdly refreshing.

Blind, I would have said this is a wild ale rather than a saison, though the hops contribute a unique character that defies expectations of either style. Very good, and a little strange.

Thanks. A week ago Thursday when the Dr. at our paediatric clinic told us to rush him to emergency at the children’s hospital, he was worried it was one of two things: either a nasty but treatable infection, or something that would require what is likely life altering surgery. After a bunch of tests, when we were assured it was the former at the hospital, the rest of it has been easy to manage all things considered.

In fact, my son was able to enjoy the Generals game yesterday as well. It was only when we got home that his symptoms came back in hurry. His shot needs some work, but his cross-over dribble was impressive (considering I didn’t know he even knew what one was!).

    Good evening NBW
I've never had this before mostly because I'm not usually a fan of red ales, but it's 3/17, so here we go.
    Smithwicks

14.9oz can stamped L3317GE002 poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 4.5% ABV. The beer pours bright, dark red in color with khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island leaving plenty of lacing. The aroma is sweet barley malt with just a hint of earthiness. The taste is semisweet toasted malt with mineral and earthy notes of offset the sweetness. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, great balanced red ale. Not overly sweet like most American reds.

    Cheers all!

Our juicy, double dry hopped love letter to Sabro hops. Huge notes of citrus, coconut and overripe tropical fruit.

Pale hazy yellow, one finger white foam cap

Aroma is orange citrus , coconut

    Taste is coconut, orange citrus

    Semi dry

    Good beer

Pours a dark cola brown and settles black in the glass with a frothy light tan head that clings to the glass. Beautiful black IPA.

The nose is filled with roasty malt aromas, some coffee, and a nice bit of berry and citrus notes courtesy of the Mosaic hops. Very nice.

The hop flavors are forward in the taste, with the berry flavors most prominent and especially delicious, with the roasty coffee flavors at the back of the palate and equally delicious.

The mouthfeel is medium and surprisingly dry, fitting this beer very well. I look forward to finishing off my stash of this beer, because it’s really well done, IMHO.

    Greetings, fellow NBWers,

It's a beautiful, almost-Spring afternoon here in the wilds of Spokanistan. Sunny and nearly 70°.

Spokane has been all a-quiver re: where Gonzaga fits into the NCAA tournament since they lost to St Mary's in the conference championship game. Now we know they're playing McNeese St... somewhere. Genuinely surprised they are as high as a 5th seed, thought they lost that when they came up short the other day. Been a weird year for the 'zags.

On Friday, I ventured out to Humble Abode's downtown location and had a couple new beers. I especially liked their Siobhan, a rather light Irish Red Ale that was only 4.7% abv, but had enough malt flavor to seem fairly substantial.
Red ales are not a style I normally care much for, but this one had the virtues of being both flavorful and light. If I'd been willing to wander out into the St. P's craziness this weekend, I could've had several of these in lieu of crappy beer dyed green.

Today, I'm hitting a beer that is new to me in the sense that I've not previously reviewed it, but I have had recently.

Skyward is a fairly newish IPA from Bale Breaker. While WCIPA-adjacent, it's more accurate to call it a "Juicy IPA." It doesn't re-invent the wheel, but it's a nice, hoppy beer. I'd hit it again as a fridge beer.

    Happy drinking, y'all!

Another weekend rolls to a close. Mostly nice outside and I got some seat time on the tractor moving some fallen dead trees pieces. Got everything I could pick up with the forks and pushed some bigger trunk pieces around that will need to be dragged out. Wasn't ambitious enough to fetch the tow strap and shackles...gotta pace myself!

    Another lovely looking beer:

Schilling Birra Portico, on the can it says Italuan pilsner, soon we know it ends up as a German Pilsner here.

Pours a clear straw color with a hefty white foamy head that persists well and leaves a hefty residue on the glass.

Smell is pretty much classic pilsner - biscuity malts, slightly sweet, floral/grassy/herbal hops. There's a white wine grapiness going on that is a little Kolsch-like.

The taste opens with slightly sweet, biscuity and bready malt. Some hop elements come in - floral, some grassy green, and the beginnings of some herbaceous notes. There's a mild bitterness in the mid-taste, then more aromatics come to play - a hint of lemon that I can't find in the smell, stronger herbal flavors, and a finish of white pepper. Floating along with all of this is a white wine grape flavor - very pleasant. Unfortunately I am also getting a bit of a stale/oxidized flavor - just enough to notice and create a little distraction.

The feel is light verging on medium. The flavor hits quick, builds a little, and finishes with the peppery bit and a touch of lemon. It's not as "bright" as some in this style.

Well...aside from the mild aged taste this is a very nice beer all around. It checks all the Getman pilsner boxes and it hits on the elements I think of as the Italian interpretation. It could be a little livelier but that's nitpicking. Right around the 4.0 mark on this one.

@Coronaeus - big sigh of relief for you and the family. Been thru things with both my kids I'd rather forget - good thoughts and prayers going your way.

Cross posted in the What New England Beer are you drinking. Sampling a new beer from an underhyped brewery in Connecticut. This is Ridge Red from Nod Hill Brewery in Ridgefield, Connecticut. This 4.5% Irish Red Ale seemed just the right beer to drink on St Paddy's Day! Happy to have picked this up and share with others.

    onto my review:
I am sampling this lightly chilled 16 oz can and pouring into a .5L dimple mug. I picked up this can at the brewery a week ago. No date stamping on the label or can.
The beer pours a clear amber color with some minimal dense beige head that fades quickly to a thin edge layer and one large island on the surface of the beer.
The aroma on this beer is toasted dark bread and some mild toffee, but more toasty than sweet for certain. I get a hint of grassy hop note, but it is very buried in the background. Pleasant aroma, definitely on the mild side.
First sip reveals a light to medium body with very fine and tingly carbonation. Texture is smooth and the beer drinks easy.
Flavor is very toasty with some dark bread and grainy hits, mixed with hints of light fruitiness on the finish and even a little faint chocolate that lingers after each sip. I dont get much hop balance here and the beer is malt forward and never gives any hint of ABV.
This toasty and slightly sweet red ale is very tasty and very drinkable. Seems appropriate for drinking today and I would gladly have more of these in a session. Id really like to try this on cask at somepoint.

Stonecloud Brewing Co. Untitled Wee Heavy, 8.0% abv; 3.98 overall

Pours an effervescent hazel/chestnut color with a finger of sand colored head. Pretty good head retention

    S: Figs, brown sugar

T: Follows the nose. leafy hops, peatyness & toffee up front. Smokiness emerges as this beer warms up, plus leafy & woody hops, a kiss of toffee as well. Finishes with leafy & woody hops, peattyness & touch of brown sugar, plus booze kiss

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation

Always good to see another Wee Heavy, This is a solid stab at the style
