16 oz. Can
WHAM-005
Canned On: 02/14/24

Poured into a Tree House glass a very nice cloudy yellow/orange color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy one-finger plus off-white head, which also leaves some pretty nice creamy sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a very nice citrus complex (oranges, tangerines, pineapple, grapefruit, mango, apricots, nectarines, peach, melon, papaya), very nice diesel like. The taste is very nice, hoppy, malty, with a very nice citrus complex (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, apricots, nectarines, peach, melon, papaya), a nice little sweetness, very nice diesel like. Full Body, ABV hidden very well, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, this is a very tasty beer. MilkShake! Orange Julius! Addictive!

16 fl oz pull-tab can. 4-pack purchased at a beer store in Northeastern Colorado for $20.99 USD plus tax.

10.2% ABV. "Hazy Triple India Pale Ale." Brewed with Citra & Galaxy hops.

Melon, passionfruit, citrus, booze. Quite rindy, bitter, and hot on the finish, revealing its high alcohol by volume without any tamping down. A bit unpleasant as a result, and not creamy or interesting enough hopwise to really justify the unwelcome alcohol warmth.

Pale malt. I imagine wheat and/or spelt. Probably oats. All I really taste overtly is pale malt beneath the loud hop flavour and unpleasant alcohol burn.

Galaxy's usual passionfruit flavour is present here but not used to its utmost potential, and I can say the same for Citra's eponymous citrus flavour. Neither hop varietal is better showcased in this beer than it is in any number of other hoppy ales lining American shelves (hell, even Deschutes' Fresh Squeezed IPA showcases Citra to better effect).

I've long thought these über high alcohol Imperial IPAs (which often using marketing gimmickry like "triple IPA" or even "quadruple IPA" in classic American excess) were ill-considered - I guess starting with Dogfish Head's 120 Minute, which continues the abovementioned obnoxious trend of beer marketing this-goes-to-eleven oneupsmanship by implying it's more extreme than their 90 Minute and 60 Minute beers) - but I guess I hoped if any brewery could pull off one that actually impressed, it'd be one of California and/or Colorado's best IPA producers.

And here's Weldwerks with one that disappoints, so I guess barring Russian River putting out one of these, I ought to stop buying them (and you should too).

I have no doubt the Colorado crowd that's as enamored with Weldwerks' IPAs as I am will have more than its fair shares of reviewers/raters who defend this fusel attempt at an IIPA, but those who can disregard hype will see this emperor ain't wearin' nuthin'.

Still, Weldwerks is Weldwerks, and inasmuch as their hoppy efforts are concerned, a disappointing Weldwerks beer is usually still a decent and drinkable enough brew despite its flaws; yes, this is a bit of a chore to take down 500ml of (why not package this 10.2% ABV ale in a more sensible consumer-friendly 330ml format? {except for, you know, profits}), but it's manageable even for an aging curmudgeon like myself.

From the loud vibrant colours on its label to the overly high ABV to the 500ml format to the loud hops and noticeable ethanol flavour, I think it's fair to say this is what the kiddies these days would call "try-hard," but back in my day (i.e. the 90s and early 00s) this phenomenon in which American people are focused solely on that which is "extreme," they didn't get celebrated - they just got made fun of via characters like the "Extreme Sports Punks" in the 2004 film "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle."

16oz can dated 2/2/23.

Pours hazy yellow with an inch of white fluff. Moderate retention and lacing. Pungent in the nose with tangerine, peach, mango. Medium bodied with a soft mouthfeel. Unripe peach, tangerine, pineapple, mango on the palate. Finishes juicy with minimal malt and a balancing bitterness.

16 oz can, date 1/20/22. Pours super murky orange yellow with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet soapy wheat malt with juicy fruit and resiny hops.

The flavor is big ashy chemical tasting bitterness with a little fruit and a ton of alcohol, with a lingering odd aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a bit of a mess flavor wise.
