Having a brewery in the U.S. wouldn’t stop a train from derailing. Maybe we need safer railroads and better regulations overseeing the use of freight trains.

The fish kill was unfortunate but what a way to go.

I feel worse for all of the fallen Modelos.

IMO, Until the cause of this specific derailing is known it is pointless to speculate what kinds of regulatory changes (if any) could/would be of benefit and what the cost/benefit ratio of those changes would look like.

Fair enough, but this country has seen an epidemic of train derailments for years so I wouldn’t be surprised if they discover this accident could have been easily avoided with either new, sensible regulations or actual enforcement of regulations already on the books. The cost might be more expenses borne by the railroad companies and the benefit would be not having fish-killing Modelo polluting an Arkansas creek.

According to this article, DOT data show the rate of derailments has steadily decreased, a lot, since it peaked in the 1970s. Are train derailments becoming more common in the US? (usafacts.org) The article has a good graphic of derailments vs. year

That may be true, but we should do all we can to avoid any derailment that results in death, injury, or environmental harm. There’s no such thing as “good enough” when the public interest is at risk because of private, profit-driven corporations operating in our communities.

I’m not going to say it’s an indictment about how bad Modelo is, but the fish and crayfish didn’t have any issues living in the dirty, murky pond water before.

Too bad for all that Modelo. It's a fairly decent commercial beer.
