A discussion in an ongoing thread got me thinking about this topic.

It seems like the level of vitriol against AAL beers in various posts has diminished over the years. In the past it was ‘common’ to see folks use words like piss or some other excrement to describe AAL beer as to why they would refuse to drink these sorts of beers. I don't see "piss" as often nowadays in thread posts.

I have been to craft beer bars where they would have a sign like this behind the bar:

So, what say to you? Are you willing to buy AAL beers for your personal consumption? Or are you a “purist” here and only stick to non-AAL beers?

I have posted in past threads that I will on occasion purchase AAL beers such a Reading Premium (brewed by Sly Fox) and Yuengling Lord Chesterfield (typically 12 packs) for my drinking enjoyment, particularly during the warm/hot times of the year (like now!).

The beer I am really drinking a lot of now is my homebrewed Alsatian Pilsner which has 20% corn (flaked corn) as part of the grain bill. It is a tasty beer with the quality of high drinkability; when I finish one bottle I immediately desire to drink a second and… Maybe I could refer to this as an AAL where the first “A” stands for Alsatian?

    Cheers!

Yeah...just last week while out of town not only did I seek out a couple of the better craft breweries but started the day at a dive bar because they carried Miller High Life on tap which I rarely see anymore. Some days I prefer an AAL to be honest.

I voted yes, but my answer would be more accurately, "sometimes". Few and far between. Sometimes I want one and it fits the moment. But no, they are not in my regular rotation.

I voted no. I don't buy AALs from the macro brewers just because they are the Big Guys (I appreciate that they make a quality product), I just don't care to have mostly flavorless beers in my fridge.

I also choose to not purchase BMC type beers but mostly because I have a preference for the AAL beers brewed by smaller breweries; a flavor and mouthfeel thing.

For others out there, AAL does not equal BMC type beers. There are smaller breweries that produce AAL beers too.

    Cheers!

Your observations are accurate Jack and I noticed the same. AAL are nowhere as bad as some maybe used to believe, and as someone aptly mentioned before in a different thread, this is BEERAdvocate, NOT CraftBeerAdvocate.

I can’t brag to have had the Top 250 beers rated here, but still had my share of World-Class beers from either side of the Atlantic Ocean.

I just can’t drink 12 bucks/euros big stouts or NEIPA on a daily basis either. Variety is the spice of life and that include AAL, which are nice palate cleanser as well.

I avoid lagers as a general rule.

Not frequently, and when I do, it's usually Miller High Life. First beer I ever had that I actually liked.

I find them uninteresting. There are a lot of well made lagers in the world, that happen to be light and refreshing, but also have considerable flavor and character. Over the years I've sampled many AALs (from the big boys, but also from smaller brewers), and I have not found one that holds my interest. So I don't drink them.

I drink AALs and buy from the store a few times a year at best and also when at a bar with friends. Maybe only 5% or less of my total beer consumption however is AALs. Sure, I like the craft brewed fresh ones more than macros for the most part but I don’t like to spend 2x the cost on craft AAL or pseudo craft Mexican lagers. when I’m in the mood for an ice cold watery beer I just buy the macro cheap stuff. My go-tos are High Life Dos Equis, Natural Light, Coors Banquet, Miller Lite in no particular order.

No. Negative. Nix. Uh-uh. Nope-a-rama. Nay.

If I'm at a cookout or a show, and someone stuffs one in my hand, I'll drink it out of politeness, but otherwise I do not touch the stuff, let alone spend money on that pisswater.

Completely depends on the environment. I drank a Founder’s Porter while rippin’ it at the pool table and immediately experienced a “never again” moment

I also think nowadays a good percentage of microbrews are arguably worse than a High Life or Yuengling so often it’s best to just stick with the reliable AAL’s and not put any thought into it

I simply have no reason to drink these beers when so many better options are readily available.

Up until about a year ago my answer would be no, but lately I have been drinking Macro AAL’s fairly regularly.

I stick to mainly High Life, PBR or Hamm’s. I still buy Craft AAL’s occasionally, but with the big boys being sometimes half the price and the taste not being shockingly different I don’t see the reason to spend the extra money.

At 17.99 I always keep a 30 rack of Jenny on hand. Its great when you want to crush a few 4.5% on a nice summer day.

Purchase? Yes. Drink? No. AAL’s are for cooking brats. They are to beer what cooking wine is to wine. You don’t want to find yourself drinking it.
