Glad you liked it, Jon! A pleasure to share some JA beers with you that don't see distro in your area. This one hit me the same way. Nothing is exceptional or even noteworthy separately, but it comes together so well and is such easy drinking that suddenly your glass is empty.

Looking forward to seeing whether you like any of the others!

I can't wait for your review. I've got quite a few beers in the queue before it and won't get it to until maybe next month, so you'll be providing a sneak peak.

Thanks to @Victory_Sabre1973 for kicking things off this weekend. And thanks to @ATL6245 for the recommendation! The Shadow King - Maple Cognac from Monday Night Brewing in Atlanta. Imperial stout aged for one year in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels and then another year in maple cognac barrels. 13.9% ABV.

Pours dark as night with no head. The nose is dominated by maple, but also get notes of toffee, chocolate, slight roasted malts, and cognac. The taste largely follows the nose, but the brandy barrel is stronger here. Maple, bourbon, chocolate, black licorice, cherry, vanilla. Great stout with a really good mouthfeel. Definitely barrel forward.

All right, here's my next beer.
    35 Southbound - Ursa Minor Brewing - Duluth, MN - American Amber - 4.8%

I do like the flavor. Maybe I am a nitpicker, but they call it a Mexican Amber. I would expect some heat or spice if that were the case. There's none. I'd buy it again, it doesa taste good, but, it seems like the brewery shouldn't promote it as something it's not.

    From a 16oz can. Canned on 04/09/2024

This beer is fairly clear pouring and amber in color. A bit of carbonation bubbles rise in the glass. The head is an off white color and 2 finger. The head retention is decent, and there's some damn nice looking lacing on the glass.
Aroma - There's a ton of caramel on the nose from the malts. I also get a ton of grain and cereal in here. Not sure why they call it a Mexican style from the nose.
Taste - The flavor is malty. There's a good hit of caramel in here. Good grain bill. Grain flavor. Again, why do they call it a Mexican Amber? There's no heat or spice that might be in the ballpark.
The body is bubbly and crisp. No heat or spice.
Ok, this beer does taste good, and I'd buy it again. The problem is why do they call it a Mexican Amber? There's nothing that would indicate that it is. There's no heat or spice that might be in that ballpark. Maybe I'm off the mark here. It wouldn't be the first time.

I may have one more in me today. Cheers!

Holiday Weekend from Prairie. Imperial stout abed in bourbon barrels with coconut, cacao nibs, cinnamon and marshmallow. 13.9% ABV. 2024 bottle.

Poured a bit warmer than fridge temp. Pours jet black with no head. The nose is cinnamon, gingerbread, slight maple, coconut, vanilla, chocolate, and French toast.

The taste follows the nose. Cinnamon is heavy on this one. Vanilla, coconut, hazelnut, maple, banana bread, ginger, and bourbon. A bit of caramel pudding comes through as well. Very tasty. Mouthfeel is fairly thick and viscous. Sweet aftertaste.

The Way from Bold Monk in Atlanta. Belgian tripel. 8.8% ABV.

Poured from a can at just warmer than fridge temp. Pours a nice transparent yellow with about an inch of white head.

The nose is orange peel, coriander, clove, mint, wheat, and a nice layer of malts.

The taste is lovely. A nice mild hoppy note comes through here. Herbal tea, mint, leather, wheat, orange, pepper. This is definitely a different take on the tripel. I often pick up notes of banana, but I'm getting more of a peppery spice instead. Really lovely.

I'd assume they're referring to something like Modelo Amber or Dos Equis Amber?

Of course, I could be wrong too. :flushed::stuck_out_tongue:

    This brew is from @muchloveforhops3

Oddpitch Brewing Reba Double Hazy IPA, 7.8% ABV; 3.89 overall

    Mine says 7.8% ABV

Pours a hazed ambeer/honey color with a finger of eggshell colored head. Average-ish head retention & nice lacing

S: Tropical fruit, pears, grape skins/must. Nose could be stringer

T: Follows the nose, dry, some pomelo up front as well. Grapes & orchard fruit dominate as this beer warms up, some guava & passion fruit backfill some of the flavor with a little citrus & dryness. Finishes dry with guava, passion fruit & pomelo leading the way, still some grape must on the edges

MF: Medium body, fairly dialed back carbonation, good balance

    Plenty drinkable with good/interesting flavor

Could be, but it wasn't bland as hell. I don't know. Maybe I was rating it hard based on what they wrote on the can.

I'm closest to the Mexican border, so I ought to be an authority, no?

100% fair IMO. If it's printed on the can/bottle/label/packaging, it ought to be in the can/bottle.

    Good evening all!
Despite the enthusiastic discussion about Mexican Lagers, I went a completely different direction-
    [IMG]
Caveat: we recently (We being our SAN group) had a session with several stouts featuring raspberry as an additive. All were very raspberry forward and the group decided that it was not a good additive for stouts. Shows what making decisions based on limited experience is worth.
This one was courtesy of @Resistance88 - he’s become my Speedway supplier.
This poured like the typical Speedway; used oil black with a half inch brown head which left copious amounts of lacing.
The taste definitely featured raspberry, but they managed to make it subtle, so it was balanced with the chocolate and didn’t overwhelm the coffee. I was impressed.
The feel is lightly viscous, ideal for the ABV.
OA, if *any* of the other raspberry featured stouts we had were like this they would be begging for more. Very well done.
    Cheers!

Goose Island BCBS Imp Stout Macaroon, 14.7% ABV; 4.07 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut with one pinky of fast falling mocha colored head. Plenty viscous, zero head retention & lacing

S: Barrel aplenty, toasted coconut, a little vanilla, dark fruits late

T: Follows the nose, dark chocolate notes, a touch of caramel up front. Plenty of toasted coconut as this beer warms, some dark fruit, sweet Bourbon & Sour mash as this beer warms up. Finishes with sublime barrel notes, a little dark cherry, coconut, a little vanilla & a touch of cola & a little cinnamon. Thank God that showed up late...

MF: Chewy body, lightly carbonated. Warming, the body thins a bit once this beer warms up

I really like the flavor, plenty of toasted coconut & chocolate. A sipper, was hoping for more nose & body

    Von Trapp — Zwickelbier

It’s been a moment since I last posted on Beer Advocate. Many beers later, here I am again. Happy New Year, BAs!

This is a collaboration with Brauerei Hofstetten in Austria. Although I’ve been close to this brewery many times, I’ve only had one of the beers distributed by B. United in Brooklyn.

The appearance is a foggy light yellow beer with a beautiful head and well-retained lacing.

The nose is spicy hops and bready malt.

The taste follows the nose with hop bitterness and a dry finish.

The mouthfeel is a full-body pilsner-like beer, with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Overall, this is an outstanding beer. I usually like Von Trapp lagers, and this one combines everything I like about them and some. It is easy to drink, and yeast/hops/malt is well balanced.
