I think that BBA Hellfighter has a chance, but if BBA Real Ale Was in a bottle it would be the one for sure. What are your thoughts....

Put Texas on the map in what sense?

I will point out that Endeavour won Silver at World Beer Cup in it's first competition. No small feat in the DIPA category. Is that the wrong map?

Yeah I appreciate that, but I feel like if you posted FT: Endeavour you would have way less responses then FT: random JK that end up being rated low (even if that is just Tx being hard on Tx) Maybe I should say what will be the next big beer out of here, but I don't feel like we have had one that is REALLY sought after other then maybe Funk

and that is being easy on Funk, but still one of my favorite beers from here

Such is the trend of beer drinkers now...JK is still new and they're trying to do a lot of what is popular now, which is the Belgian/Sour/Farmhouse/etc. And they also don't produce a whole lot and it's very infrequent. The "rarity" of their beers and the fact that they mostly produce styles that are trending right now makes them more sought after, regardless of quality.

    Sours are the new DIPA

I also feel like this is just being hard on Texas.

Texas has a lot of great beers and breweries that are way better than a lot of what's coming out of the other 49 states.

It's going to take a few beers from different breweries to "put Texas on the map." If Live Oak bottled it would easier. There won't be A beer that does it.

Let's not forget the National Beer of Texas...Lone Star

I had a friend visit from the UK and he took back a 30-pack of Lone Star. Apparently it's quite popular in Britain and fetches 5 british pounds at a bar. I'm not kidding.

It was like his version of Westvleteran 12. He couldn't believe how "bloody cheap!" it was.

As far as putting Texas on the map... we need to change some beer laws before that happens, IMHO.

Anyone who has traded Freetail knows this to be true.

Changing laws (brewpub laws & licensing laws, especially) can only lead to increased growth, less stress on the bottom line, and more room to expand out of Texas. Very few breweries make it out of state.

Can you name 1 brewery besides Shiner, for instance, that makes it to 5 or more states? (not counting BMC made in Ft. Worth & Houston  ). St. Arnold is considered huge and they distribute to ONE additional state (Lousiana)

Southern Star made it to Chicago. Not sure if anyone else gets it.

Given that breweries cant sell directly to the public and do release days like DLD or PtY, there just isnt much hype built up around the release. Everything is considered shelf beer.

Do we really want Texas to be on the "Map"? I mean, every time there is a limited release of anything in Texas it sells out quick. So, if Texas is on the Map that is just going to make that many more people chasing the already limited released beers. Those of us living in Texas know just how great the beer is here and I look at it almost like a well kept secret.

And to Lutter's point, I would love to see the laws in the state change to make things easier on the breweries and brewpubs.

Yes, we want Texas on the map. But we just don't sell to outsiders. You must show local ID ;-)

Seriously, I think we'll get there. I just don't want to be buying $30 bottles a la Bruery.

East coaster here that thinks TX breweries are already firmly on the craft beer map. I'm a hop head and have a ton of respect for many of the wonderful IPAs/DIPAs I've been fortunate enough to try, including the various offerings from Deep Ellum, Live Oak, (512), Independence, Southern Star, Karbach, etc.

I'd go so far as to say that I'd put Lost Gold among my top national IPAs; I had it two months ago and was blown away to the point of wondering whether they'd tweaked the recipe -- I didn't remember it being that good the first time I'd had it a little over a year ago.

I dont want to be on the map. These beers are hard enough to chase down here as it is.

I was just in DC for a week, and went for a few beers at Churchkey (great craft bar). The bartender told me that he had literally never even SEEN a TX beer in that area, and we're setting up a trade. People WANT to try our beers, regardless of whether there is a "one" for the map or not.

    Jester King.

In my opinion, the craft beer boom is the main reason why it's hard for TX to establish a nationwide sensation. The increase in craft beer drinkers, breweries, and out-of-state brands in TX alone over the past few years is staggering, and the same thing is happening nationwide. This is a wonderful thing for TX in general, but not so much for the trading potential of our beer. La Muerta and Jester King sours are losing trade value because more breweries across the nation are making beers of equal or greater quality. And let's face it, we have yet to produce a solid, easily available (meaning year-round) gem. Endeavour is great, but it's still relatively new to the market and doesn't come close to overpowering DIPAs from other states (Pliny, Abrasive, Dreadnaught, Hop Stoopid, etc.)

The people who fell in love with Freetail and Jester King from the beginning will continue to trade for it, but I think it'll take a while for a TX brewery to make a nationwide impression anytime in the near future. And the same is true for other states as well. Some brands have been established for years, most of the other greats are just trends that will fizzle out. Just look at the BA Top 100 list and how frequently it changes. It used to be damn near chiseled in stone.

In short, be grateful for the great beers we have and don't be too disappointed when said beers don't land you whales in the trading market. It's just beer.
