I was looking at my ratings and noticed I had a few +20% on my rDevs, which is mostly carried by my love for Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Pumpkin Ale and the massive score I gave to Free Will's Amburana Ralphius. I have quite a few +10%s too, and on the negative side I've dropped some scathing reviews on Voodoo Ranger and some Hoppin Frog nonsense. Anyone else have some pretty unpopular ratings?
Hermitage Fruit Crate Pumpkin +30 Because I rated it 3.38 and it got savaged otherwise Founders ReDANKulous -63 I may have had a bad batch, it was a drain pour
Positive is Onward and Upward from Pike 51 at +45.57, but there is one only one other review. Of a beer people actually drink, it's Asahi Super Dry at 43.9 Negative is Keweenaw Widow Maker, infected, at -66.4. Lowest in the condition as intended was Sam Adams Third Voyage at -53.8
39.8 -- Trader Joe's Josephs Brau Vienna lager. Sadly, no longer available through TJ's. FWIW -- I have 7 rDev ratings in the 30s -- almost all Lagers of various style.
Hopworks Abominable Winter Ale Gin Barrel: +35.7% I remember nothing about this beer and I do not like gin, so I can’t account for this disparity on any level. Hair of the Dog Ruth: -43.7% Was totally flat, which for me is a cardinal sin when it comes to beer. Both Oregon beers FWIW
To be fair, only two people rated it and the other one gave it a 1.67. My 3.5 rating seemed pretty reasonable.
Highest: Coors Light +44% Lowest: Redhook Longhammer -39% Coors light on a hot summer day isn’t horrible. I actually liked Longhammer. Must have rated it a long time ago.
This little exercise has proved educational for me. My 4 highest rDevs are all NA beers, probably because I rate them 'to style' rather than likability. Those 4 range from 28.2 to 49.8 (Peroni Libera 0.0). The highest standard beer is Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve at +27%. Interestingly, my most negative rDev is also an NA beer, Brew Dog's Hazy AF at -69.7%. I don't remember that beer, but it must have been a freaking mess.
"To-style" as in the Low Alcohol Beer category BA has, or to-style as in the style the brewery is trying to emulate?
To the style that the brewery is trying to emulate, but with the reservation that any NA version of a standard style is probably not going to be the real thing. The exception there is the Guinness 0.0 since it does come close to emulating its daddy.
Lol! I have not paid that much attention to it until you brought it up. I have a bunch of 20%+ ones and they are mostly Czech and German lagers. Makes sense though because the average BA reviewer underrates those beers by a wide margin. It continually amazes me how so few BA reviewers don't think there any any word class German or Czech lagers.
Bud Lite Lime 3.17 (+44.7%) It was one of my first reviews about two weeks after I joined BA, 16 years ago. I also tend to rate just about anything from Sam Adams higher than the average, as well as most German style beers.
My highest is 52.4% For Boundary Bay key Lime sour. Hurricane Malt Liquor gets a 52%. I have 7 beers of a 40+%rDev, and another 10 of 30+. On the other hand -70.4% for New Belgium Lips Of Faith - Coconut Curry Hefeweizen. Nightmare fuel, that stuff. Another 5 beers got -60+%.
My highest is Miller Lite at 3.74 / +66%. I try to rate to style. For what it is, I think it’s pretty solid. I have a few that are -20% but nothing very notable, mostly international beers from my travels. For example I rated Lotte Liquor - Krush Ice Blast Lager a 2.26 / -21.5% (South Korea). Interestingly, both are “Light Lagers” on BA, perhaps this style just tends to be very polarizing?
To the positive: +38.6% for Cervecería Nacional Dominicana Presidente. Surprisingly delightful adjunct lager made in the DR that doesn't seem to get the respect (I think) it deserves. (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/912/2910/) To the negative: -43.0% for Xingu Black Beer. Easily one of the worst beers I've ever had, but a lot of folks seem to like it just fine.
