Report back! We'd love to know where you went and how you liked it. Having locals show you around is the way to go.

I was looking at this and it looks like it would be a fun bike ride. We may have to do that one day. So many breweries, so little time!

That's a perfect loop to do on the bikes. Bike path takes you right by this place:

And, yes, you're correct: too many breweries!

My daughter and I did Memmelsdorf a few years ago.... Drei Kronen and Hohn.. Nice stops! Also hit the Schloss on the way there, and a good Rewe Markt on the way back... Wish we had time for the other outlying brauereis... Prosit!

It is one of my standard Bamberg bike rides -- I would then go out to Strassgiech for dinner Andy Gänstaller's place may be close by the time I'm there again with my bike (next spring/summer)

And you have to do Drei Kronen this year, cause the Gaenstallers stop running it on December 31st.
But they'll most likely run another Gaststube, but it might take some time till they find what they look for!

Well here's how it all went..

I liked Altstadthof in Nürnberg. I had a taster tray and the Rotbier really stood out to me there.

In Bamberg Spezial was packed so we went straight to Fässla. Liked everything I tried especially the dunkel. The helles lager and pils were nice too. Then it was time for the Rauchbier at Schlenkerla. It definitely made an impression, and I remember enjoying it a lot more out of the barrel than I had the first time out of a bottle. Ambräusianum was next and although I can't say this one was a favorite, they did have a couple pretty good beers that I tasted.

We hit Mahr's the next day, and that Kellerbier was unique and superb, even on the world's all-time worst hangover. Later on I did manage to try Spezial and Keesman even though I couldn't get to the breweries themselves, so that was nice. I also tried a few other Franconian beers from a pub past the train station a bit, including Huppendorfer, and a bock that was just tapped that night from Communebrauerei just out of Franconia. I was not expecting anyone to be tapping bock biers yet so that was a great piece of luck!

So overall it was a good trip, and thanks to all for the advice.

What's the local opinion of Ambräusianum anyway? I think they might be the most unique stop in all of Bamberg even though their tap list might as well be straight out of Munich. For a place that really only brews helles, weiss, and dunkel - all 3 taste really different from almost anything else you'll find in Bamberg or most of Germany for that matter. Plus, the brewpub decor and Mediterranean menu are oddballs, too. While I don't think they brewed any of my Bamberg favorites, they definitely stood out as doing their own thing and doing it pretty well.

They opened while I was living there. The best way I can describe it is that it's viewed more or less the way, say, Hops (or any chain brewery) would be viewed here. It's seen pretty much as a brewpub -- with all the concomitant associations, primarily negative. For me it's beers are interchangeable with any brewpub throughout Germany (Barfuesser in Nbg, Schadt's in Braunschweig, etc.)...and even some in the U.S.: unfiltered pale, dark, and wheat, and, IMO, all of them with that tell-tale brewpub "twang." As you can see, I'm not a fan at all.

I can see that. I liked their dunkel just because it reminded me of home. I get an odd peanut butter character from certain dunkels (and even dunkel weizens), and theirs was one the only places that had that note in Germany. It might even be an off flavor for all I know, but I personally like it.
This last time we didn't even make it over there. The Shlenkerla Krausen next door was too good to leave behind.

Funny about the peanut butter flavor! I've gotten that from certain macro/Euro lagers. No idea where it comes from.

I went once by accident for a beer and didn't mind it. I was in Bamberg with friends and as we were walking back down from the Dom area the skies opened up and the rains came. We ran straight down the steps into the first doorway we could find - directly into Ambräusianum. We had one and waited out the rain. I thought it was unspectacular but didn't mind it at all. Of course, I'm no local.

    I'd agree with Scott.

I got a taster flight of their hell, dunkel and weizen when i was there 3 years ago. All of them very aggressively carbonated, thin mouthfeel and lacking in flavour complexity. I hope thats changed, because it had a nice bustling atmosphere inside and the flammkuchen was good but it's hard to compete with Schlenkerla calling your name from next door.

The locals I know are not big fans of Ambräusianum. Their main problem is consistency -- sometimes you'll get a decent beer and the next time you'll get an underfermented muddy mess. It's been many years since I was down there but their "lager keller" has (IIRC) only four tanks (and no room for more). So when one beer finishes, the next batch goes on whether it is ready or not. A common brewpub problem.

That's something I will NEVER understand...you have one of the world's greatest taverns literally two houses down serving the best Rauchbier on earth, and you decide to drink unfiltered brewpub helles that could come from anywhere/anytime instead? I have been there once and once only -- that was enough for me. Guess I just don't have the ticker mentality in me at all.

I think I have a ticker's heart buried deep in there somewhere . Untappd certainly hasn't helped. On the other hand, I didn't feel like going back either. Can't say I had any issues with the quality a few years ago, but I was more intrigued by the atmosphere than the beer anyway. It was like an American brewpub was transported across the Atlantic.
